Lori/ fireplace questions

First of all, Lori if you have the heat shield on the new stove but didn't
on the old one you will notice that the wall is significantly cooler. I'm
speaking from very recent experience. We had a stove without a shield and
now have one with a shield.

Secondly, if you do decide to put a wall shield up here's how you do it. I
have to install one for my antique woodcookstove and I've gone round and
round with the insurance agents making sure it's being done right.

All you need is a UL listed stove board. They can be purchased through most
hardware stores, I know Ace usually stocks them and can order them for you
if they don't stock them. Get as big a board as you feel comfortable. You
will also need some ceramic spacers. I ordered mine from Topeka Seed and
Stove. 1-800-541-2758. Some people use the
ceramic insulators you can buy to put on electric fencing! The spacers need
to be 1 inch in depth. Figure on 6-9 spacers depending on the size of your
board. Place in the corners and then in the center on the edge if you feel
you need it for stability. The spacers should suspend the board from the
wall about an inch. Very easy to do!

In regard to using firebrick on your mat. We have several friends that used
patio pavers, the thinner ones for their mat. We used them too and they are
lovely...much cheaper than the firebrick. We paid 28 cents each for ours on
sale and the normal price was 33 cents. We put a piece of salvaged trim
from our remodeling around the edge. A piece of underlayment to place the
whole thing on...it cost about $8 at Home Depot.

Let me know if I can be of further help....we had our pad down in less than
an hour!...Deanna
