Trees and Traps       Luke 21:29 – 33          1-21-2018

 

Luke 21:29 – 38  "Then he gave them this illustration: "Notice the fig tree, or any other tree. 30When the leaves come out, you know without being told that summer is near. 31In the same way, when you see all these things taking place, you can know that the Kingdom of God is near. 32I tell you the truth, this generation will not pass from the scene until all these things have taken place. 33Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.

34"Watch out! Don't let your hearts be dulled by carousing and drunkenness, and by the worries of this life. Don't let that day catch you unaware, 35like a trap. For that day will come upon everyone living on the earth. 36Keep alert at all times. And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man."

37Every day Jesus went to the Temple to teach, and each evening he returned to spend the night on the Mount of Olives. 38The crowds gathered at the Temple early each morning to hear him."        

 

1. Complacency
1. The trees put on leaves

                                                  i.      But do you notice?

2. We see things happen in the sky, in our world

                                                  i.      But do we notice?

                                                ii.      Are we concerned?

                                              iii.      Are we complacent?

2. Life
1. We get so caught up in the world

                                                  i.      In living "life"

                                                ii.      In meeting the expectations of our peers, our employment, our families

                                              iii.      We get so caught up in the things of the world that we GET TRAPPED

3. We lose our "Situational Awareness" of God and His soon coming Son
1. We are UNAWARE
2. We are not on alert
3. So we get trapped, overrun, lost
4. 4 Powerful Tools to be ready
1. The Word of God

                                                  i.      Heaven and earth will disappear, but my words will never disappear.

2. Prayer.

                                                  i.      And pray that you might be strong enough to escape these coming horrors and stand before the Son of Man."

3. Hearing God's Word and Praying in the Unity of a Fellowship of Like Believers….CHURCH

4. Keep Alert

                                                  i.      Watch YOURSELF

                                                ii.      Watch those around you

                                              iii.      Keep your VISION on Jesus

1. Teaching (Word, church)
2. Pondering (prayer, devotion)
3. Unity – (church, gathering)
