modern convienences/appliances

I am wondering if you all could share your experiences concerning using modern appliances. Do you use as few of these as possible or do you just pick the ones you don't have time to do and use them or do you use them all? I really enjoy hanging my laundry, washing dishes by hand, making bread by hand, not using the microwave etc. but I don't seem to have time to do without so many of these things. I have 5 children and I get them to help me as much as they can but 4 of them are pretty young and not much help yet. How on earth did women do it back before these type of things?
