Mouse Problems

I am having trouble with my mouse. It periodically freezes while I am
surfing the internet or playing games and at other times also. I then
have to shut down my computer manually and restart it or turn it off
improperly so that I have to run scandisk. I sometimes am able to use
the keyboard commands to shut it down and if that doesn't work, I have to
turn it off and then back on again. Any suggestions as to what might be
wrong????
