MS Outlook 97 won't open

As a result of something I did (don't ask what; I've forgotten already) I cannot
open MS Outlook 97 where I have/had? a lot of business contact info. What I
get is an Illegal Operation message with the following information: "OUTLOOK
caused an invalid page fault in module at 0000:00000001.
Registers:" followed by whole bunches of numbers. When I get rid of that
message, there's another one headed "Unable to initialize fax modem" that
says in effect that my fax modem is unavailable. Which is true because I
recently switched over to a cable modem and the installer removed my old
modem after asking me whether I used it for faxes and I truthfully told him I
did not (as I have a separate fax machine). Is this why I am having difficulty? If
so, is there anything I can do about it - other than reinstalling my old modem?
