Multiple-checkmark popups revisited

Hello all. I am trying to get a popup menu built with the System 7 CDEF
to have multiple checkmarks (still). I ahve tried several things but none
seem to work. I'm reposting this just in case anybody may have missed the
first (I'm pretty desperate). I tried making the changes to the menu
and then saving the menu resource to the resource fork (since the CDEF
gets the menu resource every time the mouse is clicked and builds the menu)
but this really messes things up. Also, there seems to be a slight flicker
when I have to reset the control. I have looked at some other apps that
do this and found that they do some monkeying around with CALL SETCTLACTION.
Maybe this isn't necessary, just a thought. I'm thoroughly stuck.
