My father, Phil Quarrier, was hit by a motorcycle while jogging and is in ICU with a brain bleed

Dear family and friends,

I wanted to let you know that my father, Phil Quarrier, was hit by a motorcycle around 5 or 6 PM yesterday evening while jogging.  He was airlifted to Baltimore to the Shock Trauma hospital at the University of Maryland and is in ICU there.   He has a brain bleed, a bruised brain, a broken bone beneath his eye, a gash on his head, and a badly bruised shoulder.  He was very agitated last night, not understanding what was going on, so they sedated him.  He can respond to some questions, recognize my sister Barb, and wiggle his toes, but still doesn't know where he is or remember the accident.  Barb is waiting to hear the latest news from the neurosurgeon, but the last she heard they weren't planning surgery.  He will be in the hospital at least a week and then probably transferred to rehab.   He is 72 years old and is otherwise in excellent health since he jogs miles every day.  The nurse said that if he was younger, his brain would be bigger and he would be much less responsive than he is, so in this case, his age is working in his favor.

My mother, Mary, has been on a cruise in New England for the past few days, and my brother John just reached her a little bit ago since her cell phone isn't in range.  I believe that she will be getting off the ship at Boston within the next hour.  As most of you know, my mom is already the primary caregiver for my grandparents, and my grandmother was just released from rehab and is recovering from breaking her hip several weeks ago.  My Aunt Nancy has been at my parents's house taking care of them while mom is gone, so she is holding the fort there in Columbia, about 20 miles from the hospital.   John and his wife Dana are driving to Baltimore from New Jersey right now.   My sister and brother don't see any need for me to come up right now, but we'll so how it goes.

Please keep our entire family in your prayers.

Blessings,

Virginia

P.S.   My dad is on the left in this picture from my daughter Mary's wedding in May.
