by J. Randal MathenyO Lord of life, when at the start or end,
Or in the midst, of living, we creatures acclaim
The Giver of breath: our sentient souls became;
To you, O God, eternal spirits ascend.
Your finger starts the beating heart, the movement
Of quickened mind, the strength of hands and feet,
In Man desires to love, create, and eat,
Your image stamped to show divine involvement.
Your fullness of time to us were long delays,
To you, Creator, ours the deepest debt,
Beyond our ken you hide your infinite ways,
O Only God Almighty! And yet — and yet —
Midst bounty, beauty, blessings in broad displays,
How soon your mercies and grace we men forget!
