On Gratitude and Stewardship

Posted by: homenews <homenews@...>

Dear home schooling friends,

This Thanksgiving morning I was struck by the vital connection between gratitude and stewardship.  If we acknowledge that our blessings are from the heart and hands of a gracious God, then we must also acknowledge our responsibility to be faithful with those very blessings.

If we value our spiritual lives, we will want to nurture them through prayer, worship, the study of Scripture, and fellowship with other believers. If we value our families as divine gifts, then we will be diligent to care for them, to love and respect our spouses, to train our children in the right way. If we value our national freedoms, we will be vigilant to guard them by praying for our leaders, speaking out with salt-and-light words of influence, and staying active in the governmental process.  If we see that our money, possessions, homes, talents and abilities have been a result of God's providence, then we will be faithful to share them with others -- for "freely we have received, so freely give."

Now I'd like to offer a very specific way that we, as home school families, can exercise stewardship over our blessings.  We have all been blessed by companies which provide home school curriculum -- whether through stores, mail order catalogs, or conventions.  As part of our gratitude for these companies, we in turn need to support them so they can profitably stay in business!  Let's not take them for granted!

As many of you know, Faithful Bookshop in Orlando was badly damaged by the three hurricanes.  After more than three months, they are just now reopening for on-going business tomorrow (Friday) with an awesome sale!  Owner Doreen Morgan, who has faithfullly served the home school community for many years, invited me for a sneak preview yesterday.  The store, freshly renovated, looks beautiful -- and its full of all sorts of goodies to enrich your home school program.  The tables of "damaged" books astonished me.  Most of these have very little (if any) noticeable damage and are perfectly useable.  I found Saxon, Critical Thinking Press, Modern Curriculum Press, Dorling-Kindersley, and so many more publishers among these, as well as classic literature, picture books, educational toys, teaching aids, and so much more!  And that wasn't even getting to the regular merchandise and the used books section!  Besides standard curriculum (such as Apologia and Veritas Press) you will find exciting science kits and math manipulatives.  Many of you will be able to do a lot of your Christmas shopping right here! (I especially liked the boxed sets that had a nature-themed educational picture book, tape and stuffed animal.  With Doreen's 50% off sale, you can get these for $10!)

OK, enough of me talking.  Here is Doreen's blurb!  If you don't live near Orlando, you can always visit her web site at http://www.faithfulbookshop.com!
