One last note from Virginia for today...

Posted by: homenews <homenews@...>

Hello again, Hope Chest readers!

I apologize for the volume of mail you are receiving from me today.  I usually don't send this much!  I just have a several other comments and prayer requests that popped into my head.  Thanks for your patience and kind attention.  I have included a lot of web links in this message -- please understand that this is for your information and edification, and I can't endorse everything on each site.  I probably have several other things I should be sending out, but they are on the other computer, and I need to get on with my day!

This week's Hope Chest issue will be on the subject of "Why the Church?" If you have any comments on why you appreciate your church, especially as it relates to home education, please send them in as soon as possible!  This is Clergy Appreciation Month (http://www.family.org/pastor/general/a0007718.html), so remember to send your own pastor a note of encouragement and maybe a plate of chocolate chip cookies!

October is also the month for praying for the 10/40 Window, an area of the world where Christian influence is desparately needed! (Prayer guide available at http://www.win1040.com/).   Speaking of the 10/40 Window, one of my own pastors, Benny Phillips (author of Raising Kids Who Hunger for God (http://www.christianbook.com/Christian/Books/product?item_no=86963&p=1010575 ), has been in India since Sunday, and will be there several more days.  He and several other Sovereign Grace (http://www.sovereigngraceministries.org) team members, including a physician from our church, are there to assist Love-N-Care Ministries (http://www.love-n-careministries.org/).    Two of my other friends will soon be traveling overseas for a few weeks to explore ministry opportunities in restricted areas of the 10/40 Window.    I can't give out names or locations.

As I write, my oldest daughter Mary is en route to New York City to visit The King's College (http://www.tkc.edu/) in the Empire State Building.  This college is dedicated to training Christian leaders to influence society in many facets of life.  There are over 200 students from Orlando and Atlanta visiting this weekend, thanks to a pretty cool recruiting trip deal.  Please pray for traveling mercies and safety as they are there! (Also that her Florida blood won't freeze up there!)   One of the November Hope Chest tidbits will be Mary's interview with Stanley Oakes, President of The King's College.

Here are the topics for other upcoming Hope Chest tidbits in October and November.  Send in your thoughts!
  • Family stories -- Do you have a story handed down to you from a previous generation?  How do you use family stories in your own home school?
  • Thanksgiving -- Do you have any favorite Thanksgiving books to recommend to other Hope Chest readers?   How about Thanksgiving traditions or crafts?
  • Classical education -- How does this work in home school families?  I plan to review the book Teaching the Trivium by the Bluedorns.
I am in the midst of writing an article on the sovereignty of God for the spring issue of The Old Schoolhouse (http://www.theoldhomeschoolhouse.com/, a Christian home schooling magazine in California.  Please pray for wisdom as I put my thoughts together.  This is a big topic for little ol' me, but one that is very dear to my heart!

Finally, a Hope Chest reader named Amy is starting a new e-mail newsletter to help families recharge their home schools.  She writes, "A special project we're doing starting in January is our own Country Diary based on Edith Holden's book.  Anyone wanting to do nature notebooks more
may find the newsletter helpful and motivating in that way."  http://groups.yahoo.com/group/aplushomeschooling/
I guess that's about all for now!

In His Sovereign Grace,
Virginia Knowles
