Prayer -- Global and Otherwise

Posted by: homenews <homenews@...>

Dear Hope Chest friends,

Sunny Lerch sent in the following information about the Global Day of Prayer, and then I have some other prayer notes at the end.

This coming Sunday is the "Global Day of Prayer" - churches all over the world are participating in praying for many to come to knowledge of Christ and have nations transformed.  Dallas will have satellite link to other sites around the world live from Reunion Arena in Downtown Dallas.  This event started as Transformation Africa in 2001 (http://www.transformationafrica.com) and has spread throughout Africa and now to all continents, for the 5th Global Day of Prayer this year on May 15.  I believe that other states/cities and many other countries are participating as well.  They have a multi-step approach to evangelism and prayer - right now we are in the middle of the pre-GDOP prayer stage - May 6-14 - praying for the GDOP.  (This started immediately following the National Day of Prayer last Thursday, May 5).  After the Global Day of Prayer, which is on Pentecost Sunday, there will be 90 days of prayer.   http://www.gdop.org/index.htm is the place for more information about it.

May the nations unite and bring glory to the King of Kings!

Blessings,
Sunny Lerch

I briefly checked out the Global Day of Prayer web site, and found a very helpful 10 day prayer guide which you can download in many different languages.  Here is the direct link to the prayer guide in English. http://www.gdop.org/documents/10DayBW.pdf

While we are on the topic of prayer, it has been on my heart for several days now to encourage you to lift one another up in prayer.   I have the privilege of serving as the e-mail prayer chain coordinator for NearHim Home Educators, and there have been a lot of requests coming in during this past year.  I also hear from many of you, as well as talking to various moms whom I know.

It is tempting to get caught up in my own concerns and not realize that other moms are struggling even more than I am.   Let's pray for one another along these lines:

Pray for those who are overwhelmed with all of the demands of life -- home schooling, homemaking, etc.  This may not seem like a big deal to many of you, but it's a huge burden for others.  I think especially of moms with many small children and no teens to help out.  Do you know someone who needs encouragement?

Pray for those who are struggling in their marriages, that God would heal and restore.  Pray that God would renew each one's passion and compassion for the other, and that forgiveness and grace would flow freely.   Pray also for those who are already divorced or separated, that God would enable custody and child support arrangements to be carried out peacefully in a way that serves and builds the children.  We know many home school families for whom this issue causes much pain, especially if there is a disagreement about educational options or if the non-custodial spouse lives far away.

Pray for those whose children have gone astray.  Again, this concern is much more common in the home school movement than we would want to think.  It's not a time for being judgemental, but for interceding that God will grant repentance and restoration.

Pray for those who are suffering physically from chronic illnesses such as cancer, lupus, arthritis, diabetes, high blood pressure, difficult pregnancies, and other maladies.  Many of these moms can't take care of their homes and families as they would want to, and this can make them feel inadequate.

Pray for those who are caregiving for those who are ill or injured.  This is a huge concern for so many of you.  So many are in the "sandwich generation" -- responsible for caring for their parents (or aunts and uncles) as well as their own children.  Some are also caring for chronically ill spouses.  There is much concern about what will happen in the future -- if cancer will return, if finances will hold out, if life and home schooling will ever get back to normal, and more.  Pray for God's all-surpassing peace and provision.

That should be enough for now.  Keep your eyes open for moms who may need encouragement, prayer and practical service.

Hear my cry, O God; listen to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to you,
I call as my heart grows faint; lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For you have been my refuge, a strong tower against the foe.
I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings.
Selah
For you have heard my vows, O God;
you have given me the heritage of those who fear your name.
Psalm 61:1-5

Blessings,
Virginia Knowles
