Pulling Weeds

Pulling WeedsI once walked by the field and the vineyard of a lazy fool. Thorns and weeds were everywhere, and the stone wall had fallen down. When I saw this, it taught me a lesson: Sleep a little. Doze a little. Fold your hands and twiddle your thumbs. Suddenly poverty hits you and everything is gone! (Proverbs 24:30-34 CEV)
Thought about weeds lately? No? It’s no wonder; weeds don’t require much thought. They don’t have to be fed or watered, mown or cultivated. They just are. In drought or flood, weeds grow. In extreme heat or cold, weeds survive. Mow over the top of them and they spread. Neglect them and they love it. Everything around them may be dead, but weeds will flourish.
It’s easy to grow weeds in our spiritual life, too. Stop reading the Bible and doubt creeps in. Stop communicating with God and despair will spread its roots. Neglect worship, and fear will take over. To let addictions triumph, just stop fighting them. To let weeds prevail, do nothing.
If we want to develop the fruit of the Spirit of God in our lives, however, we must be intentional about uprooting the weeds and cultivating spiritual disciplines. We must feed our spirit man with the Word of God (the Bible) and water it with prayer and worship (intimate communication with Father God) until our roots dig deep and grow strong in the rich soil of His grace.
Heavenly Father, please help me to pull up the weeds in my life so that nothing will hinder or obscure Your light shining in me and through me. Be glorified in me. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.
