Rabbits

Posted by: the5kims <the5kims@...>

Hi all ~

I hesitate to ask this question because I'm asking such a basic question
that will require someone (or more) to take too much time to answer me , but
tell me about the troubles and joys of raising rabbits. Here are some of my
questions.

If my children are allergic to dogs and cats, would rabbits be a bad idea?
Can rabbits live outdoors all year? Or is that cruel?
Do angoras look different than the common rabbit or do they look different?
Are angoras softer (as angora sweaters are)?
Do you feed them lettuce and carrots and such?
Are they good pets (will my children be able to hold them and love them)?

Sorry, so basic I know. If I don't get any responses, I'll just go to the
library. I will not share my thoughts with my children on this subject. My
son, 11, is allergic to dogs and cats. Wants a pet sooooooo much and will
even mope because he can't convince me he has outgrown his allergies (he
hasn't - just wishful thinking). My 3 year old has has respiratory problems
since she was 2 months old and has to use a nebulizer when she has problems.
I'm sure if I asked the pediatrician, he'd just say no. My husband says he
will never let me try a pet again if it only means we might have to give it
away. (He is as bad as the kids. Grows attached and then mopes around
because he misses the pet and thinks we damaging the kids..)

So anyway, I'm just thinking that a couple of rabbits (probably would need
to be three since I have three children) would be a nice, outdoor, fun, and
interesting pet. Any thoughts from my friends on this list?

Debra:
We raise Angoras (yes, even here in very hot Texas!), and we just Saturday
had a new batch of kits. We are very excited, as our last batch scattered
and we lost them. I also have the book "Completely Angora", and refer to it
*constantly*; it is very, very thorough. We are trying to breed now for
"fuzzy lop", also.
Your garden sounds wonderful. I have grown an extensive garden for several
years here on our 10 acres, and have probably canned and frozen into the
thousands of quarts by now, but it never gets old to me. Right now I have
tomato plants actually setting on, and I walk it every day to check on the
little dears 🙂
I am not sure if I every posted an intro here, so I will do that a little
later if needed.
Bless you all today,
Kim
