April 22nd, 2018 "A Chickens Tale"
Luke 22:54-65 "So they arrested him and led him to the high priest's residence, and Peter was following far behind. The guards lit a fire in the courtyard and sat around it, and Peter joined them there. A servant girl noticed him in the firelight and began staring at him. Finally she said, "This man was one of Jesus' followers!" Peter denied it. "Woman," he said, "I don't even know the man!" After a while someone else looked at him and said, "You must be one of them!" "No, man, I'm not!" Peter replied. About an hour later someone else insisted, "This must be one of Jesus' disciples because he is a Galilean, too." But Peter said, "Man, I don't know what you are talking about." And as soon as he said these words, the rooster crowed. At that moment the Lord turned and looked at Peter. Then Peter remembered that the Lord had said, "Before the rooster crows tomorrow morning, you will deny me three times."
And Peter left the courtyard, crying bitterly. Now the guards in charge of Jesus began mocking and beating him. They blindfolded him; then they hit him and asked, "Who hit you that time, you prophet?" And they threw all sorts of terrible insults at him."
- A Chickens Tale usually begins by chickening out from being where you really should be!
- Jesus was going to the High Priests House
i. Peter WAS following Him
ii. Found the warmth of the fire SAFER and MORE COMFORTABLE
- So he stopped following Jesus and joined the men at the fire
- There has to be a BBQ comment here somewhere
- Being too chicken to follow Jesus QUICKLY became to comfortable
- A servant girl called him out as a follower of Jesus
- Peter, warmed and happy away from Jesus by the fire replied that he DIDN'T EVEN KNOW HIM
- A little more time in the world away from Jesus
- Someone else said he was a follower of Jesus…one of THEM
i. Peter, warm and comfy in the warmth of the flesh DENIED BEING A FOLLOWER OF JESUS AGAIN
- An HOUR later, Peter is still to chicken to go see what is happening with his Savior Jesus; Peter remains a "safe distance away" in the warmth of the fire enjoying the fellowship of people gathered by the fire.
- Someone else INSISTS he is on of Jesus' followers, an actual DISCIPLE
i. Because he is a Galilean out of place
ii. Peter replied that HE DID NOT EVEN KNOW WHAT THE MAN WAS TALKING ABOUT
- Jesus who?
- Disciple what?
- Whatchyou talking about Willis?
- But Peter, just like us, thought he was getting away with being a chicken, denying he knew Jesus or anything Jesus was about.
- He, like us, was wrong
i. THE ROOSTER CROWED
ii. Peter remembered Jesus THEN
- He remembered what Jesus had told him
- He KNEW he FAILED
- He knew he was CAUGHT
- He knew the reality of his SINS
- Brokenness overwhelmed our chicken
- Jesus LOOKED RIGHT AT HIM!
- Guilt washed over him
- Tears flowed from him
- He left the warmth of the fire
- Jesus was being mocked and beaten – following the path of salvation for ALL OF US!
- Jesus was being ridiculed and insulted
- Peter cried because he had denied Him 3 times
i. Just like he had been told.
- Be careful of your bravado
- You are but a sinner
- Jesus knows what your ARE doing AND what you are GOING to be doing
- Watch out, less you become too comfortable in the world, in your flesh, that you depart from the presence of Jesus!
