Most people use Leviticus 19:28I think that there is a little creative interpretation of verse 28 without regard to who and what specifically the text is referring to. I personally do not know anyone with a tattoo, myself included, that had that tattoo made as worship to another God or in worship of the dead as these were practicing. There may be those who do, but this is not the case in most.
You know it we are going to be legalistic about this practice, should we also be legalistic with the rest of the verses at least in that very same chapter?Look at the scripture text following these comments.
IF TATOOS ARE TABOO…
According to the context of these scriptures…
• Wouldn’t it also be just as bad to not leave a portion of your income for the poor to take at their will?
• Wouldn’t it also be just as bad to plant two different crops in your field?
• Wouldn’t it also be just as bad to wear clothes that are made of two different kinds of fabric?
Man those who wear polyester/cotton blends must be absolutely evil, right?
• Wouldn’t it also be just as bad to eat a steak medium rare?
I don’t know anyone who eats only “kosher” foods. I know they are out there, but are the rest of us evil?
• Wouldn’t it also be just as bad to cut the sides of your hair?
Do your realize that all those church people who wear the “white sidewalls” (trim their hair above their ears) are violating this text? Where are the Godly men who wear their hair down over their ears?
• Of course with the beards here I am guilty to a degree. I wear my beard trimmed. Mainly because it does not grow well on my cheeks even at my age. I still cannot grow sideburns. But it is even worse for those ungodly men who shave their entire face. According to this text the clean shaven are the most ungodly men of all.
• Now for the final insult to many today. Do you stand up every time an older person comes into the room? If you do not do this in respect of the elderly, than you might as well get yourself a tattoo, because you are violating this chapter!Leviticus 19:9, 10, 19, 26, 27, 28, & 32 , 10, 19, 26, 27, 28, & 32
(NASB)
9‘Now when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap to the very corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.
10‘Nor shall you glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the needy and for the stranger. I am the LORD your God.
19‘You are to keep My statutes. You shall not breed together two kinds of your cattle; you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor wear a garment upon you of two kinds of material mixed together.
26‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor practice divination or soothsaying.
27‘You shall not round off the side-growth of your heads nor harm the edges of your beard.
28‘You shall not make any cuts in your body for the dead nor make any tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the LORD.
32‘You shall rise up before the grayheaded and honor the aged, and you shall revere your God; I am the LORD.NIV)
9“‘When you reap the harvest of your land, do not reap to the very edges of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest.
10Do not go over your vineyard a second time or pick up the grapes that have fallen. Leave them for the poor and the alien. I am the LORD your God.
19“‘Keep my decrees.
“‘Do not mate different kinds of animals.
“‘Do not plant your field with two kinds of seed.
“‘Do not wear clothing woven of two kinds of material.
26“‘Do not eat any meat with the blood still in it.
“‘Do not practice divination or sorcery.
27“‘Do not cut the hair at the sides of your head or clip off the edges of your beard.
28“‘Do not cut your bodies for the dead or put tattoo marks on yourselves. I am the LORD.
32“‘Rise in the presence of the aged, show respect for the elderly and revere your God. I am the LORD.(NKJV)
9‘When you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not wholly reap the corners of your field, nor shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest.
10And you shall not glean your vineyard, nor shall you gather every grape of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor and the stranger: I am the Lord your God.
19‘You shall keep My statutes. You shall not let your livestock breed with another kind. You shall not sow your field with mixed seed. Nor shall a garment of mixed linen and wool come upon you.
26‘You shall not eat anything with the blood, nor shall you practice divination or soothsaying.
27You shall not shave around the sides of your head, nor shall you disfigure the edges of your beard.
28You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.
32‘You shall rise before the gray headed and honor the presence of an old man, and fear your God: I am the Lord.In His Service
