RE: Fwd: RE: {GEAR} Strings for Watts #021 => Black Market

Posted by: meyerwh <meyerwh@...>

There is a great version of Black Market on the 8:30 album by Weather Report and an associated transcription book.  I [sort of] learned in once for a group but never played it out.  I used Transcribe software to slow the lines down.  The studio version with Alphonso Johnson is great too.

Paul, thanks for forwarding it to the list, and Brother Lou...thanks for chiming in - Elixers will be back on it very soon.

A funny note with it. Normally, when the cello plays, I don't play the fretless. I always thought we collided too much. This Sunday I decided to just go ahead and play it.

We had acoustic guitar, cello, keys, myself, and djembe/conga percussion.

I had TONS of room to do frettlesy things. Then realized that the electric guitar was out of the mix (he moved to LA last month).

And funny that I had decided to start playing it again. A buddy of mine (very talented keyboard player - has backed Jeff Oster and Michael Manring on occasion) drops me a line. A drummer friend of his wants to get together and jam on some music. Wants to give Weather Report - Black Market. I wasn't familiar with it...but snagged a couple of versions of it (and the charts...Marc), and will give it a shot. Should be challenging, and humbling to say the least.

Really looking forward to playing this Sunday. My 17 year old daughter will be singing with the team for the first time. Whoohoo!

Another of this fine bass guitar's former owners chiming in....

Elixirs is the only thing I used on it.   Loved the tone, never had a need or desire to try anything else.

Have fond memories of that bass - wish I still had it.   But I haven't played in almost 3 years now, and a bass like that deserves to be played.   Glad to hear it is in good hands!!!
