Re: Flash drive letter assignment

Posted by: dwmartens <dwmartens@...>

This site claims a method that permanently assigns a drive letter to each flash drive every time it is plugged in:

I know that when I plug in certain of my USB flash drives, the assigned drive letter seems to be specific to that device, though I've not checked it thoroughly.

Hope this works for you,
Dennis

Hey, fellow CCMaggers! Anyone still out there? I have an annoying little conundrum.

I am using a Surface Pro with external monitor, keyboard, etc., on my desktop running Windows 10 Pro. My drive letter assignments are as follows:

·        C: - Main SSD drive

·        D: - Internal microSD

·        E: - External DVD

·        F: - External HD

·        G: - Virtual drive mapped from work server and accessed via VPN, which is only connected when needed

·        U: - Virtual drive mapped from work server and accessed via VPN, which is only connected when needed

Everything works fine EXCEPT…………. When I insert a USB stick into my powered hub I expect it to be assigned to H: since G: is already claimed via drive mapping. If I’m already connected to the virtual G: drive, everything goes as expected. But if I’m not connected, which is usually the case, the USB stick doesn’t show up at all in Windows Explorer. I have to run diskmgmt.msc where I find it to be assigned to G: (this conflict, presumably, being the reason it is invisible). I can then reassign it to H: and all is well.

This is tedious, however. Is there any way to really reserve G: for the virtual drive and have any additional plug and play devices assigned to H: and following?

Thanks in advance!
