RE: reply to : revisited

Posted by: Rich.Thirsk <Rich.Thirsk@...>

Dave (& Deb),

[Note: This message deals with a minor issue with the *new* CCMag *digest*
list.]

I just tested a message to: "ccmag-get.1_99@welovegod.org". The resulting
message had the first 13 messages to the list as attachments. I looked at
the mail headers for one or two of these and noticed that they do *not*
contain a "Reply-To:" header. (The resulting message itself also did not
contain a "Reply-To:" header but probably doesn't need to anyway.) I
haven't subscribed to the digest list but wonder if it works similarly to
this 'archive retrieval (get)' 'command' in that the individual messages in
the digest are received as message attachments but *none* of these message
attachments includes a "Reply-To:" mail header.

If my supposition above is correct, I believe this explains the behaviour
observed (and described below) by Deb. I.e., for the "Reply" function, a
mailer will use the "Reply-To:" header info *if and only if* available,
otherwise it will use the "From:" header info. (I can probably dig up the
RFC that describes these headers if you want.) So, I wonder if a
boilerplate "Reply-To:CCMag@WeLoveGod.org" can easily be added to the mail
headers of every message attachment in a digest? If so, Deb's attempted
reply to a message within a digest would have worked the way she expected it
to.

A message received from the regular (not digest) list does include both a
"From:" *and* a "Reply-To:" header. E.g., here are some of the mail headers
for the message being forwarded herein:
"Reply-To: CCMag@welovegod.org
Precedence: bulk
X-No-Archive: yes
list-help: <mailto:ccmag-help@welovegod.org>
list-unsubscribe: <mailto:ccmag-unsubscribe@welovegod.org>
list-post: <mailto:CCMag@WeLoveGod.org>
Delivered-To: mailing list ccmag@welovegod.org

From: "Deborah Bensted" <bensted@tig.com.au>"

BTW, I also just tried sending a message to "ccmag-help@welovegod.org" and
received a message starting with:
"Hi! This is the ezmlm program. I'm managing the
ccmag@welovegod.org mailing list.

I'm working for my owner, who can be reached
at ccmag-owner@welovegod.org.

This is a generic help message. The message I received wasn't sent to
any of my command addresses.

--- Administrative commands for the ccmag list ---"

The rest of the message looked very much like (identical to) what I
received: a) to confirm my subscription ("Subject: confirm subscribe to
ccmag@welovegod.org"); and b) my subsequent "Subject: WELCOME to
ccmag@welovegod.org" message. So it looks like this works as you suspected
for the general (non-list-owner) mailing list user.

Dave, thank you for serving the list members in this way. You are doing an
excellent job so far! From what I see so far, I think I am going to be a
very happy camper! 🙂

HTH,
Rich

Subject: [CCMag] reply to : revisited

Had another look at the reply to: problem I was having. The reason
I didn't get the correct reply to was because I had got one of the
digests, ordered by following the instructions in the welcome
message. The digest comes being able to open each individual
message from within the digest list but when I click on reply to:
under those circumstances it defaults to the sender.

So, when I hit reply to a message that has come as a single
message it defaults to the ccmag address. When I hit reply of a
message that has come as part of a digest it defaults to the
original sender and I have to change the selection to send it to the
list.

Hope this is clear and saves any confusion for those that answer
from a digest in the future.

Deb
