Steve:This is one of the most bothersome problems I've ever run into with
Microsoft products. IE cannot be deleted and reinstalled. This is where
the true arrogance of that company really shows. It's also the reason Mr.
Gates finds himself in the legal labyrinth he's in...enough editorializing...Three times now, the cable modem guys have DELETED the Internet Explorer
folder on my clients' computers. They did so because THEY prefer AOL's
Netscape. No way to recover, except reformat...First, let's step back. Are you POSITIVE that IE 5.5 is the cause of your
problems? I've been running it for quite some time on several machines
without so much as a HINT of a problem. It's certainly more stable than
the 5.01 release, which DID cause freezes, BSOD, etc.Usually, there's no way to fix the problem without extremely drastic
measures. What I'm saying is you MAY have to not only reinstall Windows,
but reformat and reinstall. Ugly, ugly, ugly. Before you do that, try a "mini-reinstall". Shut down ALL programs running
(except for Explorer), INCLUDING BACKGROUND programs shown in the "close
program" window (Ctrl, Alt, Del). Then run d:setup (assuming d is your
CD-ROM).I don't have much confidence that will fix the problem. The next is an
"overlay" reinstallation. Boot from the Windows 98 Start-Up Disk and
follow the on-screen instructions. By reinstalling from DOS, you get a
much cleaner install. Hopefully, this will work. However, if neither the mini-reinstall or the overlay reinstall work, (and
it's very possible!), you will have to resort to reformatting and starting
all over again.I truly hope there's another solution, but if there is, I've never been
able to find it.Dave Shoemaker
