It seems that it's not unusual for fretboard shrinkage (due to humidy changes, I guess) to leave the ends of the fret wire sticking out slightly. It's common practice to have these ends filed and polished by a luthier to smooth things out again.

This topic is discussed a lot over on the Acoustic Guitar forum as well.
