How many of the players are Christian? If more than a few are non-Ciristian it could be tricky. Making unbelievers memorize scriptures MIGHT turn them off to the Bible. Perhaps some Dragonslave character-run NPCs?
I certainly agree with using pregens. Making a character, especally if there is a group about can be exhausting (as so few can be quiet while the slow reader takes a bit longer etc). Knowing the character of the players can help in deciding on pregens. Some kids might like a character with a bit of a backstory, or maybe even a theme to the party.
One demo that I played in (Hackmaster) had a pregen group that was actually pretty awful people, and one Lawful Good Dwarf that had developed a facial tick from the company he kept... I know a group of this sort is innapropriate for Dragonraid, but one with interesting character types would be interesting.
