RE: [GEAR] ABG Strings

Thanks for the input. I ended up going with D'addario EXP Coated Phosphor Bronze. My mileage did vary, compared to Marc's suggestion for flats: I've never ever played a set of flats I've liked, so was wary..

But after settling down to playing the new Kelly I realized something I learned about the Dragonfly fretless when I tried one a few years ago. The fret dots on the side of the fingerboard are not offset to match a fret. So scale patterns have to be visually adjusted up by ~a quarter tone. 🙁

It's like the company said, "Hey! Let's make a fretless model! It'll be easy cuz everything is the same, just no frets! And we'll even save $$ on that whole fret thing!"

Well, one gets what one pays for.

Still, it is rather fun to play. I just have to close my eyes. 🙂

The problem I've had with every single Kelly I've ever played has been that they're overly BRIGHT. Flats are the way to go here. Absolutely. I love the sound of Thomastik's, but they are expensive and don't seem to last very long. I've had a lot of success with D'Addario Chromes. They're kinda "pre-dead" and they last forever.

YMMV.
