If I remember right the Amish around us used something made by Amway.
Possibly LOC. Melaleuca also makes a heavy duty cleaner that should remove
the soot also.

When we lived non-electrically we found that just mopping with a good
detergent with a ceiling mop worked for us. Prehaps it's the kind of paint
you have on the walls?...Deanna
