Re: Feed Recipe

Posted by: dhaley <dhaley@...>

I started feeding the following mix several years ago. I was given the
recipe by my friend Laura Warner. For those of you in TN you may know of or
heard of Laura. She own's Fox Trot Dairy Goats. Laura's animals show very
well. Laura used play Polo (professionally I think). She came up with this
mix and everything on her farm eats it, goats, show horses, cattle, you name
it. I have found that anything I raise will eat it and thrive on it. It's
also less expensive than any prepared pelleted feed you can buy. The trick
in TN will be to call around to the local feed mills to see who still mixes
liquid molasses. I had to travel over by Clarksville, TN to get mine mixed
up. (Griffey's feed mill) Don't croak...but it costs me about $4 per 50lbs
to have it mixed here in MN but cost me nearly $7 per 50lbs in TN. That
dosen't sound like much but when you feed as much as 200 pounds a week
between all your animals it starts to add up.

It works out to be about a 16% protein ration. The best part is it's whole
grains and you know what's going into it. The only drawback is driving home
from the feed mill. I always have this very distinct desire for a spoon and
some milk....it smells like really good hot cereal!

It's kind of funny that folks I don't even know buy my mix from the feed
mill. It's become a popular mix!

72.5 lbs crimped oats
197 lbs cracked corn
137.5 lbs soybean meal
50 lbs - cotton seed hulls, rice meal or rolled barley
(this is a fibre so your local feed mill may suggest something else
that he has on hand..it won't matter what you substitute with)
5 lbs of 12-12 sheep mineral
60 lbs of liquid molases (depending on the time the grains were harvested
you may need to add more molases....tell them you want it moist and dusty.
Sometimes I have them throw in some soybean oil to moisten it up. If you
like black oil sunflower seeds in your mix...just add it to the list.
