Re: From Atlantic to Pacific

Hi Heather 🙂
Our rural area has very few job openings. Dh's company is wanting to hire
apprentice linemen but that's a job for someone who wants to work as a
lineman for many years to come. A four year journeyman program must be
completed once the apprenticeship is begun. At first, they were shooting for
applicants with CDLs, but that may have changed. There is no industry around
here, tourism is the main thing so service jobs are mainly what's available.
Pay is often minimum wage and most businesses don't offer any benefits.
During the past couple of years, there have been very few job openings in
the local paper. Overall, New Mexico is high on the list for families living
in poverty as a multitude of positions pay minimum wage or slightly higher.
Resort areas like ours tend to have expensive housing whether renting or
buying. A young co-worker of dh's is talking about going to Wyoming to work
in the natural gas field I believe. Seems like wages would be in the $20+
range per hour.

Eastern New Mexico is also booming from the oil companies doing business.
The weather isn't nearly as cold and extreme as North Dakota or Wyoming. The
area is physically ugly to me....flat and dry. People with CDLs are hired
very quickly for all sorts of jobs. One friend of ours works four days
driving trucks for oil companies, then comes up here for three days. He gets
lots of overtime and makes GOOD money, but he already had a CDL so they
wanted him.

In Midland/Odessa, Texas, there are tons of jobs in all sorts of fields
because of the oil boom. Workers in oil related jobs are making great wages
but there is little to no housing available and what is available, is
expensive. My oldest is paying $900 a month for a one bedroom, not-very-nice
apartment with utilities included.
There are all kinds of new businesses opening in Midland all the time and
there is a huge labor shortage. Getting a job is the easy part. Oil
companies are renting hotel rooms so even "cheap" hotels may run $100 or
more a night. Many folks live in hotels and one hospital was renting rooms
for $1200 per month to hospital and school employees. There is no state
income tax in Texas which appeals to many, but they make it up for it with a
high sales tax and higher fees than New Mexico for just about everything.

Hope this helps!
