Subject: [HomeSteadHeaven] Hachiya Persimmons

We have lots of beautiful persimmons available at $1.50 lb.  (less than half the price of persimmons in the store).

Organic Hachiya Persimmons

Hachiya persimmons are incredibly tart unless they are absolutely ripe. Ripe Hachiyas are unbelievably soft and taste as sweet as candy when perfectly ready. They are elongated and oval shaped. They will ripen once picked, so you can let them soften on the kitchen counter until ready to use. Whether Fuyu or Hachiya, look for persimmons that are bright and plump and feel heavy for their size. They should have glossy looking skin without any cracks or bruises. When fully ripe the fruits are a beautiful deep orange. Another indicator of ripeness is that the fruit should feel like a water balloon when resting in your hand. The skins are thin, similar to a tomato. The flesh is even deeper orange in color and more striking then the skin. It has a jelly-like texture that has a very comforting feel inside the mouth. The flavor is candy sweet and possesses nuances of baking spices.. Ripe Hachiya persimmons can be eaten out of hand, or can be made into purees, sherbets, ice creams, jams, compotes, puddings, breads, cakes, pies and tarts. The Hachiya variety is easy to distinguish from the Fuyu variety, because while the Fuyu looks like an orange tomato, the Hachiya is shaped like a large acorn.
