Lisa,The coal stoves we have been looking at work very much like a wood burning
furnace. Actually, we have been looking at dual fuel furnaces that would
heat with either wood or coal.Coal is placed in a "hopper" at the back of the stove. It feeds
automatically. Stoves can be bought with different size hoppers. The
stove is suppose to burn about 40 pounds of coal a day, so a 100 pound hopper
would hold enough fuel for two and a half days.Coal is quite economical compared to the price of natural gas....which we
currently have.We currently are on an equal billing program, where we pay $95.00 a month
all year around. Coal would cut our heat bill in half.If we were to install a coal stove in our basement, where our current gas
furnace is located, we could use the same piping we now have. If we go to
a cola/wood stove, we will need to install triple wall pipes to accommodate the
heat from wood. That might be expensive initially but we have so much wood
and it is such a cheap commodity here that it would be in our best interest for
the long run.Hope that helps.

Outhere, everything is heated with propane, natural gas, electricity, or
wood. Some people will use portable Kerosene heaters, but I don't know of
anythingusing coal. Please educate this gal! Thanks, Lisa
