You probably could eat the lettuce if you check it over really good for bugs
and worms. The chickens might like it better. LOL Lettuce enjoys cool
weather and suffers in the heat.

I'm not sure if your into sprays or bug killers, but I would cut it off,
spray and let it grow back. That way by the time it is ready to eat the
spray would be long gone. You could even try an organic hot pepper spray.

I've heard from people around here that the dark green lettuce has been
attracting bugs and they are leaving the light colored alone.

I would think you could plant yet for a couple of weeks. Lettuce is a
really short day so you might get away with it. The cooler fall days you
might have the best luck.
