Jacqui,When you say "hydro" do you mean hydroelectric? There is a local company
here that designs systems to get people off the grid. Here in MN we do
pretty well with wind generation most of the year. With a combination of
wind and solar we would have been able to have an unlimited supply of water
into our house with a $5K system. We'd have had some surplus electricity
but not alot. Some friends of friends in TN powered their whole house with
a $5K system but also had gravity flow water. We could go with a ram pump
off the creek but it would be a long process and in the winter it wouldn't
work because it would freeze. Jacqui I often think of the little old gal
that lived in the farm Debbie wants to buy across the river from you. She
was in her 80's when she left the house. She never had indoor plumbing of
any kind. She had a hand pump out in the yard and she lived there most of
her life, raised a family and did just fine. I think sometimes we can get
by without a less than we think we can. Because I've lived non-electrically
I know you can live very well that way. Having it is nice though. I think
the biggest concerns you would have in our area of the country is water and
heat. If you have a well on your property, you can get a handpump to draw
it up should the electric fail. The other is a way to cook and heat and it
seems you are already pursuing that. Deanna
