Re: RE: Heather- days

I, too, am curious about the alternative treatments Marci is pursuing. My friend Jan also used alternative treatments when first diagnosed, but hers mainly centered around supplements and dietary changes. Another friend with cancer tried some oxygen treatments, but that was after she had already undergone traditional treatments like chemo and radiation for years.
Cough syrup that's addicting usually contains codeine. Brandon used to buy bottles of it and would drink the whole bottle in a short time. It's cheap, legal, and can be somewhat easy to obtain although our pharmacies here require a signature and may limit people to certain quantities. Codeine will eventually not be as effective in making someone "high" so then, they'll need something stronger and may seek out much more dangerous and/or illegal drugs like cocaine, heroine, etc. Brandon's problems started when a back doctor gave him pain pills for an injury. I think he got hooked on them and then needed stronger stuff when he experienced withdrawals. Drugs enhance or suppress chemicals and natural hormones which can cause a person's body to produce too much or too little. When that happens, the person will "crave" more drugs deal with the chemical and hormonal imbalance. In addition, there may be emotional and mental components to the whole picture too, and the substances may mask those issues or help someone not be as bothered by them. It's much more complicated than just someone wanting a buzz and should be addressed by professionals who know what they're doing. If someone recognizes a problem and seeks help for it, that's a huge first step as many addicts live in denial insisting they don't have a problem. Heather, maybe your son could attend a Narcotics Anonymous meeting for support and accountability as well as recommendations of where to find help. Praying for both of you! Lisa NM

I'm glad your son has asked for help as theis could very well lead to something more serious.  I never thought about becoming addicted to cough syrup.  Would this be more of an alcohol addiction I wonder?  Still, people should take this seriously.  I can't imagine why someone would just make something like this up so why not help him.  Have you called AA to see?

Marci had a new posting on her caring bridge but I don't know the exact alternative treatments she is having.  I can't imagine how hard this is on her as she is such a doer and get it done kind of gal!  We have to continue to pray.

In Him,

Patricia
