Oh Lisa, I can see where it would be hard to keep looking up.  I will pray for rain for you!!  I am sorry about your plants.  Mine aren't even in the ground...

In yesterday's Ruidoso paper, it was reported that New Mexico has been unusually wet the last fifty years. The person quoted in the article said we're not really in a drought, New Mexico is just returning to its normal condition. We were advised that 1-3 inches of rain per year could be the new normal. We've already noticed a big decrease in snowfall around here, and that coupled with a very reduced rainfall is going to make for some pretty bleak conditions. Also, a reporter for some news channel stated that Las Vegas (NM) and Ruidoso (twenty miles from us) are the next two communities in this state that will run out of water. Already, Magdalena, a small town of about 1500 people is out of water...the town's well has pumped dry. I think the National Guard is hauling water to that town. Our little village is supposed to have plenty of water with its wells and water rights, but if the aquifer is not replenished by rain, it won't last forever. Even if Magdalena drills a new well, there is no guarantee they will find water. One lake three hours from here is at 7% capacity.
 
Dh and I have been planning to eventually sell our property, but it will be impossible if Capitan's water supply fails. Our pasture looks just as brown and dead as it did last winter. I don't know if any real estate is selling in this county...for sale signs seem to be everywhere. Even if we were able to sell, we'd have to be very careful about buying anything else as many wells in this county have gone dry. When municipal sources go dry as well, then what?
 
We were majorly bummed to discover Monday that blister beetles had stripped our tomato plants. They did their awful deed in the space of a few hours. Dh had no choice but to spray the plants with bug spray as the beetles completely covered each plant. If the beetles get on skin, blisters (painful I think) will form. We never planted anything else....couldn't seem to find the time...but I guess it's a good thing as they would have ravaged every plant.
 
I know the Lord can send rain regardless of any human prediction and there are hundreds in this county praying for rain. As for growing our own food.....that's very unlikely considering late frosts killed ALL our fruit this year, beetles have now stripped our plants, and there is no rain falling from the sky. We were willing to pay a high water bill to keep everything alive but to lose it all to frost and bugs...it's very discouraging.
 
On a brighter note...today is my friend Jan's birthday. She turned 50 about the time she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Despite it returning to her brain and lungs, she is celebrating her 59th (I think) birthday today. Thank you Lord!
