Route 66 goes through Tucumcari. My youngest brother David owns an acre with a shop building in Logan, the small town closest to Ute. He keeps his boat and lake stuff in the shop.On Friday, David, his wife, and step-son arrived in Tucumcari. My other brother Dean, two of his daughters, one daughter's boyfriend, and my mom made it to the shop building and parked Dean's RV.We had a great day on the lake Saturday on the boat and riding Dean's jet skis! It was around 95 degrees and the water was very calm. We set up canopies on the shore for those not on the water, grilled burgers, and relaxed in camp chairs.Around 5, dh and I returned on the jet ski to hear a ranger had warned the family that a storm would arrive in less than an hour. Everyone packed up stuff and loaded most of it in our truck along with dh, our two boys, nephew, and me. Dean took his daughter and her boyfriend on one of the jet skis. The other jet ski had stopped running so it was tied to the boat. David, his wife, my mom, my two girls, and one niece all loaded in the boat with the rest of the gear. The clouds really got ugly....very dirty and the water started churning. It wasn't long before horrendous winds started blowing. There was almost non-stop lightning all around. We drove around to where the other two pickups and trailers were parked. On the way, we ran into a huge wall of dust...so bad we couldn barely see in front of us. It took us awhile to get around the lake, and when we arrived, only Dean and his passengers were there with the jet ski. There was no sign of the boat. The lake water was white-capping and the sky was very angry looking. Mark could barely open the truck door to get out and help Dean load the jet ski. With no sign of the boat, we drove a long ways to the marina to see if they might be there. The storm was still raging....raining hard, extremely strong winds, lightning that seemed continuous. I was praying like crazy, trying to not be worried. We drove back to where we had seen Dean and while sitting there, he came driving up with all the passengers from the boat. They had started across the lake following Dean. After going quite a distance, the motor died. The waves were huge swells and nearly capsized the boat. The waves carried the boat to shore where it started bashing into big rocks at the bottom of a pretty steep hill. God had miraculously provided a thick rope right where the family disembarked. Makenzie described it as a "beautiful" rope 🙂 It took some effort to get my mom up the hill...girls pushing and pulling. Right where they needed to take a big step, God just happened to place a hay bale of all things. There also "happened" to be a construction site up above with a trailer and other structures. The storm had never slowed at all during this time.....gale force winds blowing dirt at everyone, lightning strikes hitting everywhere. After finally climbing the rocky hill and getting into a safer location, another miracle happened when they were finally able to reach Dean. We had been trying all night to call, text, whatever and there was no service anywhere. They left the boat and disabled jet ski tied to rocks as there was no way to get them out of the water.Yesterday morning, Dean drove to the boat and managed to move it with his other jet ski. Just two more feet and the boat would have sunk so he made it just in time. The boat was pretty banged up around the front and has a hole somewhere. It was completely full of water. David told me last night that a towel had wrapped around the bilge pump, that's why it wouldn't work. Also, the boat died on the water because it was out of gas. Originally, we all thought the waves had flooded the motor shutting it down.David is planning to silicone and rivet the boat this morning and thinks we'll be able to use it today. Neither jet ski was working yesterday so I don't know about them.Last night, Tucumcari experienced another significant storm with heavy rain that flooded the streets. Small cars couldn't even cross because the water was so high. More rain is forecast for today so I'm not sure what will happen today. Tonight's our last night in the motel so we'll be home some time tomorrow. It's ironic that the day of the boat ordeal, my mom was saying that she and my dad had bought that boat twenty years ago, that it was still running great. David bought it from my mom when my dad died.David just told us that the locals say 3" of rain fell last night, and that they had never before seen that much water in the streets. As with our previous experience sinking a boat in Mexico, this latest boat ordeal provides much evidence of God's protection and provision. The girls told me they were praying from the beginning. My sil told me the girls did very well...stayed calm, stayed out of the way, and did what they were told. Even though they were wearing life jackets, they were in considerable danger during that storm. Had the boat capsized, they could have been thrown into the rocks. In all his visits to Ute, David has never seen waves like he did Saturday. Please pray for safety for all of us as we finish this vacation and return home. There is never a dull moment when my family gets together 🙂Thanking Jesus!Lisa NM
