re: teaching to stay out of debt

Posted by: empalo <empalo@...>

Thanks for bringing up about teaching our children to stay out of debt.
I wish I had been taught that lesson, but I grew up getting whatever I
wanted in life and had no concept of money management at all.
So when I was first married I just charged things I wanted.

We learned that lesson several years ago, after moving from Southern
California, having a nice new house there, a pool and more.
We always prayed that God would show us the simple way to live and
He did. We moved to Oregon, our daughter nearly died and was in ICU
for 10 day, 5 more in the regular medical unit, all 12 days befor our new
insurance was effective. Then 2 months later my husbands job was
cut and we were without a job. We ended up quite in debt.
But we buckled down and
by God's wonderful mercy, He led us, not to a place we would choose
on our own, (Texas was too hot for my liking) but we ended up here.
Housing was cheep, so we paid cash for an old fixer upper. We tore
up all credit cards, and lived like we had no money at all. We also
met some wonderful Christian families, who knew how to live simply
and they were good teachers by example to us.
.
So here we are completly debt free, no house payment, no car payment,
no credit card debt, and we grow lots of our food.
So this journey has taught my children, the true blessing of not having
debt. All our older children have huge savings accounts.
My oldest son, saved $3,000 this summer working for my husband
and hope to be able to buy a house when the time comes for him to do so.
I think though, that I need to impress living debt free more to my youngest son
who never knew what it was like to see Dad pay many bills.

Lovingly,
Pat
