Scripture Had To Be Fulfilled - Scripture Has To Be Fulfilled

"This Scripture Had To Be Fulfilled" - "This Scripture Has To Be Fulfilled"

After the ascension of Jesus His remaining disciples had some time to contemplate the dizzying changes that had occurred in their lives.  When Jesus entered their lives nothing was ever the same.  And  - mostly due to their own thick-headedness - their notions and beliefs changed more radically in the last days of Jesus' ministry than it had in the first.

It seems we all face this problem.  "Faith is the substance of things not seen." (Heb 11:1)  Being accustomed to walking by sight, those who begin walking by faith do not foresee much of what life on earth brings.

One root of bitterness must have been hard for the disciples to overcome: the terrible sin of Judas.  While the deeds of Judas could never be excused, there was one way that they could be understood:

"Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled, which the Holy Spirit spoke before by the mouth of David concerning Judas, who became a guide to those who arrested Jesus;  for he was numbered with us and obtained a part in this ministry."  (Acts 1:16-17)

Peter went on to quote from Psalm 69:25 and Psalm 109:8.

Through the power of God, we see that the evil of man can work the grace of God.  How else would Jesus have died for us?

The scripture had to be fulfilled.  Peter made a statement we often seem unwilling to accept.  The statement has two parts.

First, Peter insists that God's will must be accomplished.

That is certain.  Before God laid the foundation of the earth He had a plan to save the souls not yet created (1 Pet 1:20).  The day the stars were set in the sky their seasons were appointed by their Maker (Gen 1:14-18).  The great ocean itself cannot disobey the command of God, "This far you may come, but no farther, and here your proud waves must stop!"  (Job 38:11)

Second—and here faith often fails—God's word declares His will.

If God has spoken, it will come to pass!  The scripture must be fulfilled.

Jesus made a similar statement in refuting the Jews who were offended when He claimed to be God's Son:

If He called them gods, to whom the word of God came (and the Scripture cannot be broken). . .  (John 10:35)

Despite the clear proclamations of God's word we want to "hold out" for the unwritten exceptions.

Even though "thus saith the Lord," we hope that He might have omitted a few footnotes.

But the scripture cannot be broken; it must be fulfilled.

The scriptures proclaim that we may never speak a lie.

The word affirms that hell awaits those who compromise the truth:

But there shall by no means enter it anything that defiles, or causes an abomination or a lie, but only those who are written in the Lamb's Book of Life.  (Rev 21:27) But the cowardly, unbelieving, abominable, murderers, sexually immoral, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their part in the lake which burns with fire and brimstone, which is the second death."  (Rev 21:8)

Is there a "White" lie?  Can we "stretch" the truth to avoid hurting someone's feelings?  May we exaggerate to add force to our arguments?

No.  A white lie is still a lie.  If the truth is stretched it is no longer the truth.  We play the devil's game when we do not fully present the truth in our speech (John 8:44).

But what of exaggerations?  I fear this sin besets most of us.  We must take it seriously.  Exaggeration may have its own word but it is still a lie.  All liars will have their part in the lake of fire.

This Scripture must be fulfilled.

What is your attitude towards your brothers and sisters in Christ?

We often believe that if we go to the assemblies, if we pray and read our Bibles, if we abstain from immorality, and if we hold all the right opinions on all of the issues that have a sort of "celebrity" status in the brotherhood, heaven's gates are standing wide.

But what do the scriptures teach?

Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal.  And though I have the gift of prophecy, and understand all mysteries and all knowledge, and though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, but have not love, I am nothing.  And though I bestow all my goods to feed the poor, and though I give my body to be burned, but have not love, it profits me nothing.  (1 Cor 13:1-3)

Is "edification" to you just another word for "rebuke"?

Is the "spirit of gentleness" of Galatians 6:1 simply the absence of violence?  Does your service to your fellow Christians extend only to a handshake at the church-house door?

Jesus used the example of washing the apostles feet to teach them of the necessity of the service, humble service, we must give to each other:

"Do you know what I have done to you?  You call me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am.  If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another's feet.  For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you.  Most assuredly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him.  If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them." (John 13:12-17)

What have you done lately in service to your brethren?

Do you even have time—in your busy schedule—to find out about their needs and make sure that they are filled?

In Matthew 25:41-46 Jesus taught that He will take it personally if we forsake the needs of our brethren.  He stated emphatically that a failure to care for our brethren will land us in everlasting punishment.

And this scripture must be fulfilled.

What of your devotion to Jesus?

Does anything stand in the way of obeying Him?

Jesus said that our devotion to Him must exceed our devotion to any other person.

He who loves father or mother more than Me is not worthy of Me. And he who loves son or daughter more than Me is not worthy of Me.  (Mat 10:37)

We may have to turn our backs on the faith of our parents.  We may have to withhold companionship with those of our own house.  We may have to leave a dear friend or relative behind in order to serve our Maker.

Can we not love Jesus and our parents?

Of course.  Yet our love for our parents cannot stand in the way of our service to God.  Jesus could not have been clearer than when He taught that loving Him means obeying Him:

"If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our home with him.  He who does not love Me does not keep My words; and the word which you hear is not Mine but the Father's who sent Me."  (John 14:23-24)

We cannot claim Jesus as Lord without obeying Him; we cannot enter the kingdom without obeying Him:

"Not everyone who says to Me, Lord, Lord,' shall enter the kingdom of heaven, but he who does the will of My Father in heaven."  (Mat 7:21)

Just as all others, this scripture must be fulfilled.

Do not fool yourself with false notions about the grace of God.

Truly, His mercy is great, but the scripture must be fulfilled.

Believe what is written.
