CONTENDING FOR THE FAITH
THE BOOK OF JUDE
GOD JUDGED THE IMMORALITY OF SODOM AND GOMORRAH (VS 7)
Introduction
Jude's third illustration of God's Judgment was that of Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns. Some of the most depraved sexual perverts of ancient times lived in this area. God destroyed this cesspool of sin with fire and brimstone. This should serve as a dreadful example of what happens to those who turn from God to follow their own lustful natures. The fate of the unbelievers in those two cities (Gen. 19:1-29) foreshadows the fate of those who deny God's truth and ignore His warnings. The punishment by fire on the perverse inhabitants of Sodom and Gomorrah is indicative of the eternal fire of hell, which will be experienced by false teachers and other unbelievers.
I. SOME UNDERLYING PRINCIPLES TO REMEMBER:
A. Just Because A Practice May Be Accepted By Society (Or Even By The Church!), That Doesn't Make It Right!
(1 Corinthians 5:1-5)
B. The Influence Of Immorality Is Always Corrupting!
(1 Corinthians 5:6ff; 2 Peter 2:7-8)
C. Unchecked Immorality Is A Result Of Holding The Truth In Unrighteousness And It Carries Its Own Consequences--
A Downward Spiral Of Wickedness! (Romans 1:18ff)
D. The Majority May Rule, But That Doesn't Make It Right!
(Exp--10 Spies and the Nation of Israel vs. Joshua and Caleb)
E. There Is An Absolute Moral Standard--The Holy God!
(1 Peter 1:15-16; Malachi 3:6)
F. God Is Not A Respecter Of Persons. (Romans 2:ff, esp. vs. 11)
II. SODOM'S STANDARD--THE STANDARD PERVADING THE WORLD TODAY.
(GENESIS 19:1-11; 19:30ff)
A. Sensual--"If it feels good, do it!"
B. Sexual--Given over to fornication and all forms of perverseness and immorality.
C. Standard loosening.
III. GOD'S STANDARD--THE ONLY RIGHT VIEW!
(Genesis 2:18, 21-25; 7:2; 1 Tim 1:8-11; Hebrews 13:4)
IV. THE BOTTOM LINE: GOD JUDGED AND WILL JUDGE IMMORALITY!
(1 Corinthians 6:9-10; 2 Peter 2:6-10)
Conclusion
He judged immorality in Sodom and Gomorrah, He judges it in society, He will judge it in the apostates and those who follow their wicked ways.
