WELCOME TO SERMON SEEDS FOR MAY 20, 2002

IF SERMON SEEDS IS HELPFUL TO YOU, PLEASE FORWARD THIS TO SOMEONE ELSE!

UPDATE ON PASTOR DOUG WINN - Pastor Doug Winn is still battling infection. Pray that he will be out of the hospital and into family housing in the next couple of days. Also pray as they make arrangements to resettle in the Dallas area near two of their children. Finally, we need to continue to pray that he will become a candidate for the liver transplant. Thanks so much.

Nehemiah, Patriot

Nehemiah 1

When we consider the word "patriot", we think of those who have defended and helped the country we call our own. In the U.S., we think of Washington, Jefferson, Lincoln, Eisenhower, MacArthur etc.

There are many Jewish patriots in the Bible. One of the greatest was Nehemiah, a man who served as the king's cup-bearer in Persia.

THE RIGHT KIND OF FAITH

Matthew 8:5-13

The Centurion in this story shows us the kind of faith we should have.

It is a faith that:

REQUESTS THE POWER OF GOD Vss. 5-7

RESTS IN THE POWER OF GOD Vss. 8-12

RECEIVES THE POWER OF GOD Vs. 13

2 Corinthians 3:17 etc.

THERE IS LIBERTY!

Imagine being given a check for a million dollars and never cashing it.

Imagine having a freezer and cupboard full of food and never eating.

Imagine dangling precariously on a rope when there is a ladder within your grasp.

Imagine living a life of defeat and despair when there is no reason to do so.

"And where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty."

If you read 2 Corinthians 3 you will discover that God does not want us under the bondage of law keeping or self-effort. Instead He wants us to have the freedom of the Holy Spirit working in our lives. Because the Holy Spirit is present within us, all we need to do is reach for it by faith. We live such self-defeating lives that God never intended us to live.

I want to share with you some of the freedoms we have as a result of the working of the Holy Spirit. We just need to appropriate these truths by faith.

FREEDOM TO BELONG - Romans 8:15-17

You are a child of God and therefore part of the family of God.

FREEDOM TO SERVE - 2 Corinthians 3:5-6

We are ministers of God. His sufficiency to serve comes from God.

FREEDOM TO BE GUIDED - Romans 8:14, Psalm 32:8

FREEDOM TO WITNESS - Acts 1:8

FREEDOM TO LEARN - John 16:13-15

FREEDOM TO PRAY - Romans 8:26-27

FREEDOM TO PRODUCE - Galatians 5:22-23

Ephesians 6:10-17

FULLY ARMED

When I pastored a church with a Christian School, I discovered that the favorite songs of young boys tended to be what I call "Christian Fight Songs" These hymns about Christian warfare are indeed an important part of Christian hymnology. There are such songs as "Sound The Battle Cry", "Victory In Jesus", "Onward Christian Soldiers", and "Stand Up,. Stand Up For Jesus", which encourage the Christian to stand up and fight for Christ.

Of course, soldiers need to be fully armed when they go into battle. Any good army provides the soldier with all he needs in weapons, technology, clothing, transportation, etc. in order to fight a good fight.

We, as soldiers of the cross have also been equipped for the fight which is ahead of us. This fight against Satan and his forces is talked of in our text.

THE INVASION Vss. 11-12

THE INSTRUCTIONS Vss. 10, 11, 13

1. "Be strong in the Lord and the power of his might." Vs. 10

2. "Put on the whole armor of God." Vss. 11,13

THE INVENTORY Vss. 14-17

Here are the weapons we should put on.
