Leviticus 7:1-7

A SAD DAY

It was the official day of ordination for Aaron, the High Priest and his sons. In many ways it was a glorious day (See Leviticus 8-9). However, what should have been a glad day became a sad day, because of the sinful actions of Aaron's oldest sons, Nadab and Abihu.

STRANGE FIRE - Vs. 1

Nadab and Abihu chose to offer something other than what was commanded by God.

Sometimes we think we can be creative and do our own thing and still please God. In reality, when we offer to God anything that He has not asked for, we are offering "strange fire". I think that this a similar mistake made by Cain in Genesis 4. He offered something "strange" instead of what God required.

STRONG FORCE - Vs. 2

God in His holiness and righteous anger struck Nadab and Abihu dead.

God's discipline is a strong force. When we experience it, we need to repent.

1 Corinthians 11:28-32, Hebrews 12:4-11

STRICT FOCUS - Vss. 3-7

Although there was a death in the family Aaron and his remaining sons were to remain focused on God. Everyone else did the mourning while they remained set apart for God's service.

2 Samuel 15:16 etc.

SPECIAL ASSIGNMENT

Often God chooses to work through people. David was on the run from Absaloam. He needed someone to remain behind and be used to thwart Absaloam and his advisor, Ahithophel. God chose to work through Hushai.

DAVID ASKS FOR HELP 15:31

GOD ANSWERS THROUGH HUSHAI 15:32

DAVID ASSIGNS HUSHAI 15:33-36

HUSHAI ACCEPTS THE ASSIGNMENT 15:37, 16:15-23

GOD ACTS THROUGH HUSHAI 17:5-22

Psalm 8

MIGHTY GOD

GLORY TO HIS NAME - Vss. 1,9

GLADNESS OF THE WEAK - Vs. 2

GREATNESS OF HIS POWER - Vss. 3-8

*********************************************************

Luke 6:4349

SELF EVALUATION

It is good for us to reflect and evaluate what we are doing for the Lord.

WHAT IS MY FRUIT? Vss. 43-45

A good heart produces good fruit and an evil heart produces evil fruit.

WHO IS FIRST? Vs. 46

If Jesus is Lord, you will do what Jesus says to do.

WHAT IS MY FOUNDATION? Vss. 47-49

A person who hears and obeys the Lord Jesus has built his house on the rock. This house will stand.

A person who hears and disobeys the Lord Jesus has built his house on the sand. This house will fall.

John 4:46-54

A FAITH ADVENTURE

When we think of the word, "adventure", we think of lots of excitement. (You might refer to some adventures you or members of your congregation have had.) The greatest adventures of all are those that God leads us through. These adventures usually require faith, as seen in this Bible story.

The nobleman approaches Jesus. He would like Jesus to come and heal his son. Vss. 46-47

HIS FAITH WAS CHALLENGED - HE WAS DESPERATE - Vss. 48-49

Jesus tested this man. He simply clung by faith to Jesus in desperation.

HIS FAITH WAS CONFRONTED - HE WAS DEPENDENT - Vss. 50

He was told to go home because his son lived. He was dependent on what God had told him. He believed what the Lord had told him.

As we study God's Word, we are responsible to go on with life and be dependent upon what God has told us.

HIS FAITH WAS CONFIRMED - HE WAS DELIGHTED - Vss. 51-54

We will also have our faith confirmed, and be delighted when God does what He tells us He will do in His Word.

Ephesians 1:3-6

RICHES FROM THE FATHER!

Ephesians 1:3-14 is one sentence in Greek. In it we see the riches we have from the God The Father, God The Son, and God The Holy Spirit. Here are the riches from the hand of God The Father.

THE FATHER'S PRESENT TO US - Vs. 3

We are blessed with all spiritual blessings in heavenly places in Christ.

THE FATHER'S PLANS FOR US - Vss. 4-5

We are holy and without blame.

We have received the adoption of (adult) children.

THE FATHER'S POSITION TOWARDS US - Vs. 6

We are accepted in the beloved, who is Christ!

THE FATHER'S PARDON OF US - Vs. 7

Final point just added to this outline from Sermon Seeds A34

I'D RATHER SING

I preached this sermon Sunday night, June 30, 2002. We stopped the message and sang several of the hymns mentioned here. Of course, you need to adapt this sermon so it mentions songs or choruses that your people know.

Some of the darkest days in our nation's history were the days when we practiced slavery.

The Black people showed remarkable spirit and faith. Their attitude was, "I'd rather sing."

Out of their pain came some great Spirituals:

Nobody Knows the Trouble of I've Seen

There is a balm in Gilead

Swing Low, Sweet Chariot

We Are Climbing Jacob's Ladder

He Never Said a Mumbling Word

"I'd rather sing" is a good philosophy.

Most of us would rather sing than cry.

Most of us would rather sing than complain.

Most of us would rather sing than think evil thoughts.

Most of us would rather sing than be angry.

Most of us would rather sing than do evil.

"I'd rather sing" is a Biblical attitude. The Book of Psalms mentions singing on many occasions. Three of these occasions are Psalms 47:6-7, 89:1, 49:1,3

Colossians 3:16 - Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom; teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.

Ephesians 5:18-19 - And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; [19] Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;

As a result of the Word of Christ and the Holy Spirit dwelling in us, our attitude should be I'd rather sing.

Using our hymnbooks, let's consider songs that we can sing that will minister to our hearts not just on Sundays, but all through the week.

I'D RATHER SING HIS PRAISE

Our praise is to be continual - Philippians 4:4, 1 Thessalonians 5:16, Hebrews 13:15

Our praise is an act of worship - Psalm 100:2

Some of the songs in our hymnbooks that encourage us to praise include:

Holy, Holy, Holy

O Worship The King

How Great Thou Art

Blessed Assurance

I'D RATHER SING OF HIS PEACE

Romans 5:1 tells us that a saved person has peace with God.

Not only do we need peace with God, but the peace of God is also promised. John 14:27, Isaiah 26:3, Philippians 4:6-7

When we become disturbed at the world situation or our own situation, we can focus on the peace of God by singing about it.

Abide With Me

Tell It to Jesus

The Haven of Rest

I'd Rather Have Jesus

It is Well With My Soul

The Solid Rock

Blessed Quietness

I'D RATHER SING A PRAYER

We are called to pray. Jeremiah 33:3, Matthew 7:7-11, 1 Thessalonians 5:17

Sometimes we wonder how to pray. Sometimes hymns that are prayers will help us express ourselves.

Breathe on me Breath of God

Send the Old Time Power

Showers of Blessing

Have Thine Own Way, Lord

King of My Life I Crown Thee Now

Take My Life and Let It Be

I'D RATHER SING OF HIS PRESENCE

In John 15:4-5 Jesus tells us to abide in Him. Singing of His presence will help us abide in His presence.

Some hymns that help us abide:

Turn You Eyes Upon Jesus

Leaning on the Everlasting Arms

Near the Cross

Face To Face

Saved By Grace

What a Friend We Have in Jesus

In The Garden

I'D RATHER SING OF PERFORMANCE (OBEDIENCE)

Obedience is an essential to our lives. We will perform well as we obey the admonitions of some of our favorite hymns.

Trust and Obey

Onward Christian Soldiers

Joy in Serving Jesus

Take Time To Be Holy

Are Ye Able Said the Master

Who is on the Lord's Side?

Make Me A Blessing

I'D RATHER SING A PERSONAL TESTIMONY

Psalm 107:2 reminds us that we are to testify of our salvation.

We can sing our personal testimonies with hymns like:

The Old Rugged Cross

At The Cross

Standing On The Promises

O Happy Day

At Calvary

I Love To Tell The Story

Amazing Grace

As for me, I'D RATHER SING! How about you?
