KNOWING GODS HOLINESS
Knowing God Series, #3
Pastor Peters is preaching on Knowing Gods Holiness.
What a mismatch. Pastor Peters and no other preacher is capable of such a task. Gods holiness, is mostly beyond comprehension. We can only grasp a small part of it.
Why then should I listen? Even a little understanding of the holiness of God will change your life!
But what do we mean when we say, God is holy?
Something that is holy is sacred or set apart from others.
If God is holy, and He is, he is set apart from all others.
He is special.
THE PRESENTATION OF GODS HOLINESS Vss. 1-4
Vs. 1 - A great king, Uzziah, had died. This was a great sorrow. But although great and Godly people pass on, the vision that Isaiah saw reminded him and us, that God is alive! He says, I SAW THE LORD!
Who did Isaiah see on that throne? According to the Apostle John, he saw the Lord Jesus.
John 12:41 - These things said Esaias, when he saw his glory, and spake of him.
Jesus is God!
God took Isaiahs eyes off the problems of this world and placed them on God himself. Psalm 93:1
Vs. 1 Notice that God is high and lifted up
I believe that Isaiah would have been awe of the vast size of the temple in which God dwells. He saw God as high and lifted up, above everyone. I think Isaiah probably felt as big as a speck of dust.
and his train filled the temple.
The train was the hem of his garment.
What is the garment of God?
It is a garment of light! Psalm 104:1-2, 1 John 1:5
If there is no darkness in Gods light, try to imagine how intense that light in the temple of God must be! The most intense of lighting on earth can not compare with the light of the glory of God!
Isaiah 6:2 - Above it stood the seraphims: each one had six wings; with twain he covered his face, and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.
Seraphim are angels that evidently guard the very holiness of God. Their name means burning ones. Imagine their intense brightness as they fly around the throne in an attitude of worship. I think that these creatures must be huge! Imagine giant wing spans, and the massive power in those wings!
Even these creatures who have not been tainted with sin do not look at God. They cover their faces and their feet in humility.
If these creatures are in awe of the glory of God, we should certainly be in awe of His glory even more so.
Isaiah 6:3 - And one cried unto another, and said, Holy, holy, holy, is the Lord of hosts: the whole earth is full of his glory.
These creatures, how many of them there were no one knows, fly around Gods throne proclaiming his holiness.
And please realize that the proclamation of Gods holiness was probably very loud. I feel that these angels would be making their proclamation of his holiness with booming voices.
Isaiah 6:4 - And the posts of the door moved at the voice of him that cried, and the house was filled with smoke.
The posts of the doors of the heavenly temple vibrated, perhaps in reaction to the proclamation of the seraphim, and probably as a reaction to the awesome power and holiness of God!
The house was filled with smoke, a symbol of the glory of God.
So this is an awesome scene, showing Isaiah and us, just how awesome, how holy God is!
THE PRESENTATION OF GODS HOLINESS Vss. 1-4
THE PROBLEM WITH GODS HOLINESS 5
Isaiah had a problem with Gods holiness.
Isaiahs problem with Gods holiness was his own sinfulness!
Isaiah 6:5 - Then said I, Woe is me! for I am undone; because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips: for mine eyes have seen the King, the Lord of hosts.
In the time of Isaiah, it would have been easy for him to compare himself with other Jews, and feel pretty comfortable. Isaiah would have been better than most of them.
And today you can compare yourself with most Christians and feel pretty good about your own Christianity.
But Isaiah was not comparing himself with other Jews.
And you should not compare yourself to other Christians.
Isaiah saw God. And when Isaiah saw God he was terrified.
When he saw the pure holiness of God, he cried, Woe is me for I am undone!
THE PURIFICATION OF GODS HOLINESS 6-7
Isaiah 6:6-7 - Then flew one of the seraphims unto me, having a live coal in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar: [7] And he laid it upon my mouth, and said, Lo, this hath touched thy lips; and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin purged.
The moment Isaiah came to the end of himself and admitted his filthiness, was the moment God, in his holiness provided help.
The moment a person without Christ, comes to the end of himself and turns to Christ God purges his sin. 2 Corinthians 5:21, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11
The moment a Christian comes to the end of himself and confesses his sin, God purges his sin.
1 John 1:7-10
THE PRACTICAL APPLICATION OF GODS HOLINESS Vs. 8, 1 Peter 1:15-16
God did not save you so you could continue to live the way you always did.
God saved you so your life can be productive for Him.
If you sincerely get saved, and sincerely confess your sins as a Christian, then Gods holiness will accomplish two things.
First of all, because you appreciate the cleansing you have received, you will be available to God for whatever purpose he has for you.
Isaiah 6:8 - Also I heard the voice of the Lord, saying, Whom shall I send, and who will go for us? Then said I, Here am I; send me.
Isaiah had seen Gods holiness.
Isaiah had seen his own filthy sinfulness.
Isaiah had experienced the cleansing of his sin.
God called for a volunteer.
Isaiah answered the call, not because, he was superior or special, but because he was cleansed, appreciative and available to do whatever God called him to do. How would he dare not do what God called him to do?
Theres more. Please turn to 1 Peter 1:15-16, But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.
What has God called you to? Look at verses 1 Peter 1:3-5.
This God who has given you new life
This God who has given you an incorruptible inheritance in Heaven
This God who is holy has called you to live a holy life!
You are Gods child if you have been born again. John 1:12
Your conversation, your manner of life is to be Like Father like son. Youre Father is holy, set apart from evil, set apart to himself. You are to be holy, set apart from evil, set apart to the Father himself.
Now the only way we can live holy lives is through the power of the one who has made us holy. It is only through the work of the Spirit of God that we have the power to live holy, Godly lives.
If you have seen the holiness of God
If you have dealt with your sin, either by being saved or confessing them as a Christian
If your sins are purged
Then, be available, saying, here am I send me, and be holy, living a holy life because the one who has called you to forgiveness and salvation is holy.

Luke 15:1-24
I think of Luke 15 as the Lost and Found chapter of the Bible. This three part parable , unique to Luke, features the lost sheep, the lost coin, and the lost son. In each case, the thing that was lost was found by God.
Personally, I see the things which were lost here as pictures of sinners, with each story showing a different way in which sinners are lost. I also see the finding being done by the Trinity, with each story showing the work of one of the members of the Trinity in salvation.
Background
Vs. 1 Jesus was a man for all people.
As the very Son of God, as the elite of creation, one might expect Him to hob knob with the spiritually and financially elite.
Not so! Jesus disciples included a former tax collector, a former revolutionary, and several former fishermen. Not exactly the upper crust!
Here we see who Jesus was ministering to. He wasnt ministering to the upper class, although they would have been welcome! Jesus said, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28)
It was the publicans, or tax collectors and sinners who Jesus was ministering to! These were the people who undoubtedly needed help.
Vs. 2 Never think that you are the first one to meet opposition when you deal with someone about their soul.
Our Lord did as well. And take note of where the murmuring was coming from.
It came from the self-righteous, the ones who thought that they were too good to need help from our Lord.
THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SHEEP SPEAKS OF THE DIRECTION OF THE SINNER FOUND BY THE SEEKING SAVIOR. Vss. 4-7
Vs. 4 Sheep are dumb animals.
Sheep get lost, not because of a thicket, but they wander too far from the shepherd.
Children are the same way. How do they usually get lost?
They just wander off.
And we are just like sheep according to Isaiah 53:6.
And do you know what the most helpless animal is when they are separated from human attention?
Its the sheep!
They are not like cats or dogs who can often fend for themselves when lost, and often even find their way back.
Just like the sheep, we are lost in sin, we cant help ourselves.
But then enters the Jesus, shepherd, who doesnt leave us in the wilderness. He faced the wilderness that we might have life.
Just like the shepherd in the parable:
s He faced the wilderness of a mock trial.
s He faced the wilderness of being spit upon and beaten.
s He faced the wilderness of the pierced hands and feet.
s He faced the wilderness of separation from his father.
s He faced the wilderness of the cross.
And think of today! Our Lord still is searching for lost sheep, those who are in the wilderness of sin.
As verse 5 says, he lays them on his shoulders and brings them in.
THE PARABLE OF THE LOST COIN SPEAKS OF THE CONDITION OF THE SINNER, FOUND BY THE SEARCHING SPIRIT. Vss. 8-10
Vs. 8 The lost coin was perhaps a part of a wedding gift.
Notice that the coin was lost, but could not cry out like the sheep could. It couldnt yell, Here I am, under the sofa!
The coin was just a dead piece of metal.
This shows in parable form our own spiritual condition. Ephesians 2:1
In the parable the search was on! The woman took a broom, and started sweeping the dirt floor until the missing item was found!
In the same manner, we being dead in trespasses and sins, need someone to search us out! John 16:8-11
This is the work of the Holy Spirit of God.
Without His work, none of us would come to Christ.
He convicts of sin, righteousness and judgment. Ephesians 2:4-7
Vss. 9-10 Again we see the story of joy.
The woman rejoices.
The angels rejoice in Heaven when one sinner
repents.
THE PARABLE OF THE LOST SON SPEAKS OF THE DECISION OF THE SINNER WELCOMED BY THE SEEING FATHER. Vss. 11-24
Read Vss. 11-16
Here is a boy who wants his inheritance early.
His father gives it to Him.
He squanders the money and ends up in a real state of need.
Vss. 17-19 He comes to his senses and makes a conscious decision.
This choice is up to him.
He can go back to the Father, or He can be forever miserable.
We were lost like the sheep.
We were dead like the coin.
But, like this young man, there were times when we willfully chose to sin.
Now there needs to be a deliberate decision to come back to the Father.
Vs. 20 The boy returns, but the Father was looking for him all the time.
Hes disgraced the family.
Hes lost the inheritance.
But hes still a son!
So when the father sees him coming, he runs to meet him.
Just as our heavenly Father sees us coming and is ready to come and meet us.
Theres one difference. When we come to the Father, and confess ourselves to be sinners and trust Christ as Savior, we do not lose any inheritance, but gain eternal life and become sons of God.
Vs. 21 The boy stumbles out an apology.
He comes humbly.
But before he can offer to become a slave, he is reinstated.
Vss.22-23 He receives a robe, a ring, and shoes.
And again there is great rejoicing!
Just think of how many people would be welcomed by the Father if we were more diligent in our soul winning efforts.

Hebrews 1:1-4-14
THE SUPERIOR SON
HEBREWS STUDY - LESSON #2
(This is a complete lesson with study questions)
§ What does the word superior mean? Give examples of how we use the word in daily conversation.
§ How is the Lord Jesus superior to you?
After seeing how awesome Jesus is in Hebrews 1:1-3, we now see that he is superior to a special group of beings, the angels.
§ What do you know about Angels?
§ Many Jews in Bible Times were preoccupied with Angels.
§ Have you seen any evidence of people you know being occupied with Angels?
It was important for the Hebrews that they not consider Jesus to be an angel or like angels. He needed to be seen as He is, the superior Son of God.
REVIEW THE AWESOME SON
1. JESUS CHRIST IS HEIR OF ALL THINGS Vs. 2
2. JESUS CHRIST IS CREATOR Vs. 2
3. JESUS CHRIST IS THE BRIGHTNESS OF GODS GLORY - Vs. 3
4. JESUS CHRIST IS THE EXPRESS IMAGE OF GODS PERSON Vs. 3
5. JESUS CHRIST HOLDS THE WORLD TOGETHER Vs. 3
6. JESUS CHRIST PURGED OUR SINS Vs. 3
7. JESUS CHRIST SITS AT THE RIGHT HAND OF GOD Vs. 3
CONCERNING THE SON
1. HIS NAME Vss. 4-5 (Psalm 2:7, 2 Samuel 7:14)
V Names in Scripture are often important. Why?
V Why is it important for Jesus to have a better name than the angels?
V What are some of the names given to Jesus? What is the best name given to Jesus?
For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I
begotten thee? This is a quote of Psalm 2:7 and refers to the resurrection. Acts:13:33
V Romans 1:3-4 - Jesus had been the Son from all eternity. However, the resurrection
declared him to be the Son of God, and showed his qualification as such.
V And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son? This quote in a lesser way refers to Solomon, but in a major way looks ahead to the one called Davids Greater Son, the Lord Jesus. 2 Samuel 7:14
2. HIS POSITION Vs. 6
P Jesus is the first begotten or first born
P First born refers to position, not to order in time of birth. To be first born means to be the the Chief One. Might, dignity and power were associated with the firstborn.
P Jesus is first born or in the position of preeminence over creation because He is creator! Colossians 1:15-16
P Jesus is also first born from the dead. Colossians 1:18
P Jesus is not the first person mentioned in the Bible that was resurrected from the dead. Name some. What are differences between them and Him?
3. HIS RIGHTEOUS REIGN Vss. 8-9 (Psalm 45:6-7)
¼ Why is the deity of Christ, mentioned here, an important doctrine?
¼ Did Jesus ever claim to be God? Where?
¼ Did the Apostles and writers of the New Testament claim that Jesus is God? Where?
¼ In this passage, God the Father claims Jesus to be God.
¼ The throne is symbolic of Jesus power, which is eternal.
¼ The scepter is symbolic of Jesus authority.
¼ Note in verse 9 that Jesus loves righteousness. What are some of the things we can do today that Jesus will love?
4. HIS JOY Vs. 9
¼ What was the oil that Jesus was anointed with?
¼ What was Jesus anointed as?
¼ Notice that Jesus reign will not only be righteous but joyful. What will be the result when Jesus reigns in your heart?
5. HIS CREATIVE ACTS Vs. 10 (Psalm 102:25-27)
¼ When the earth was created Jesus did the creating, not the angels.
6. HIS PERMANENCE Vss. 11-12
¼ The earth will age like a garment, and will be cast off and replaced. Revelation 21:1-2
¼ Jesus is eternal. Hebrews 13:8
¼ How are you encouraged that Jesus does not change?
CONCERNING THE SERVANTS (ANGELS)
1. THEIR SONG (Worship) Vs. 6
à How does this verse show Jesus superior to angels?
à What is one of the principle jobs of angels? Isaiah 6:1-4, Revelation 5:11-14
à What do angels teach us about worship?
2. THEIR SERVICE 1:7, 14
à What are some of the stories of service about angels mentioned in the Bible?
à Do angels still minister today?
3. THEIR SUBMISSION Vs. 13 (Psalm 110:1)
à The right hand of God is a place of influence, power, and authority. No angel will ever sit there. It is the place of the Son.
