Habakkuk 3:1-19
FAITH TRIUMPHANT
Pilgrimage of a Great Thinker Studies in Habakkuk #3
· Share the story of a famous person who had triumphant faith.
· To you, what are the ingredients of a triumphant faith?
· Why should I want to have a triumphant faith?
Habakkuks faith was being tested in Chapter 1. In chapter 2 Habakkuk trusts God for an answer to his question. When God answers, Habakkuk is taught the truth. In chapter 3 we discover just how far Habakkuk has come as he expresses his own version of triumphant faith.
In chapter 3, Habakkuks prayer is more than a petition. It is a beautiful ode filled to overflowing with adoration and praise, thanksgiving and recollection of how God had dealt with Israel. Habakkuks prayer is sublime in both its poetic concepts and diction. It ranks as one of the finest pieces of Hebrew poetry in the Old Testament. David Levy, When Prophets Speak of Judgment, Habakkuk, Zephaniah, Haggai, (Bellmawr, NJ, Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry Inc., 1998), p. 70
THE PROPHETS PRAYER Vss. 1-2
A. Revive
· Vs. 1 The word Shigionoth probably refers to musical style or setting.
· Vs. 2 The prophet was afraid, but this fear probably included an attitude of reverence and/or awe.
· Habakkuks call for revival was not a request for religious resurgence. Instead, it was an appeal for God to bring about his promised judgments on Israel and Babylon quickly.
· The word revive means to keep alive.
B. Reveal
· Apparently Habakkuk wanted God to reveal to His people that this was His work. Perhaps he was desirous that the people would know what was coming. Perhaps he wanted them to understand that this was Gods work even as it happened.
· Why should we want our fellow believers to understand what God is doing?
C. Remember
· Habakkuk understood the necessity of Gods wrath, but in the midst of wrath, he was desirous that God would remember mercy.
· On the basis of this verse, what should be our prayer concerning Gods coming judgments during the Tribulation period?
THE PROPHETS PORTRAIT (OF GOD) Vss. 3-15
A. The Splendor or Glory of God Vss. 3-5
· A theophany is a physical manifestation of Gods presence. This passage is a theophany.
· Vs. 3 Teman is in what was Edom. Paran is in the Sinai Peninsula.
· It is very possible that Habakkuk is remembering Gods giving of the law or His deliverance of Israel from Egypt. Gods glory was revealed to Israel at this time. Exodus 19:16
· Vs. 4 Notice the brightness of Gods glory, perhaps in the Pillar of Fire, that led Egypt by night. Why would God have hidden His power?
· Vs. 5 is reminiscent of the plagues that were on Egypt.
B. The Judgments of God Vss. 6-15
· Vs. 6 God measured the earth for judgment.
· How has God startled nations with judgment?
· When will mountains actually be scattered and hills bow? Revelation 6:4-8
· Vs. 7 Cushan and Midian were probably nations on either side of the Red Sea that would have been witnesses of Gods work at the Red Sea and would have been troubled.
· Vs. 8 This is a question that requires an answer of no. When God parted the Red Sea he was not angry, but He was displaying His power in behalf of Israel.
· Vs. 9 God is ready to come to the aid of His people as He did at the Red Sea.
· Vs. 10 Perhaps the flood is being referred to here as one of Gods judgments.
· Vs. 11 Compare this verse with Joshua 10:12-14.
· Vss. 12-13 Looking forward to the Battle of Armageddon, Gods triumph in Christ will be complete. Revelation 19:17-21
· Vss. 14-15 God is seen here as fighting for Israel.
THE PROPHETS PERSONAL TESTIMONY Vss. 16-19
A. Reaction Vs. 16
· Habakkuk was shaken by the awesome devastation that was to come.
· He would wait patiently for Gods vindication.
B. Reality Vs. 17
· How is this account a worst case scenario?
· How might we paraphrase this passage for today?
C. Rejoicing Vs. 18
· Why can we rejoice in the Lord when there seems to be nothing worth rejoicing about?
· How is God the God of our salvation?
D. Resources Vs. 19
1. Strength
2. Power
3. High Walk
Habakkuk progressed from saying Why, Lord? to Wow, Lord!

MODELS
IN STEP WITH THE MASTER LESSON #15 STUDIES IN LUKE
Luke 7:1-35
· Look at the outline below, choose a topic and give us an example of it. For instance, give an example of model faith.
After delivering the Sermon on the Plateau Jesus headed home to Capernaum. Chapter 7 shares stories from Jesus ministry that give us models. Some of these models are ones to follow, while others are ones to avoid.
MODEL FAITH Vss. 1-10
· Vss. 1-2 A centurion was traditionally the leader of a hundred men. He was a mid-level army officer. In this case he was a gentile.
· Vs. 3 - Why do you think he sent representatives instead of coming himself?
· Vss. 4-7 - Compare the comments on worthiness found in these verses. Who was correct and why?
· Vss. 7-8 What do these verses tell you about the centurions opinion of Jesus?
· Vs. 9 What made the centurions faith so remarkable that Jesus marveled?
· How does the centurion put us to shame? Hebrews 10:6, Mark 11:22-24
· Vs. 10 What would Jesus heal in your life, family, work, and or church, if you trusted Him?
MODEL MERCY Vss. 11-17
· Vss. 11-12 Imagine two large crowds converging. Describe the contrasting mood of each crowd.
· Vs. 12 People were generally buried the same day they died. What made the widows situation so desperate?
· Vss. 13-15 Notice the compassion of Jesus and that He was willing to involve Himself in the situation.
· Vss. 16-17 How would you evaluate the reaction of the people?
MODEL DISCOURAGEMENT Vss. 18-23
· Vss. 18-20 - Why was John discouraged? How does discouragement lead to doubt?
· Why was John disappointed with Jesus? Luke 3:16-17
· Vs. 21- Jesus gave the disciples something to report to John. They were eye witnesses of great miracles.
· Vs. 22 Jesus refers to promises made in Isaiah about Him. Jesus is implying that He is fulfilling Scriptures concerning Him, and this is proof that He is Messiah.
· Vs. 23 Jesus encouraged John not to give up, or to be offended in Him. When will we need this kind of encouragement?
MODEL SERVANT Vss. 24-30
· Vs. 24 Why did Jesus wait until after Johns disciples left to compliment John? What does that teach us?
· Vss. 24-25 Jesus is asking the crowd why they went to the wilderness to hear John. Was it because he was a wimp? Obviously, not!
· Vs. 26 How did John embody what the people of that day and we would envision as a prophet?
· Vss. 26-27 John was more than a prophet because he was the forerunner of the Lord Jesus. Malachi 3:1
· Vs. 28 With obvious exception of the Lord Jesus Himself, John was the greatest man who ever lived. Why?
· Why is he that is least in the kingdom greater than John?
· Vs. 29 The common people and even the tax collectors agreed with Jesus pronouncements. They declared God right, agreeing with Jesus. They had been baptized by John.
· Vs. 30 The Pharisees and lawyers rejected Johns baptism and thus rejected Gods will.
MODEL REBELLION Vss. 31-35
· Vss. 31-32 Jesus is quoting children calling to other children who would not play with them. They played flute, but there was no dance. They mourned and there was no weeping.
· Vs. 33 John came as an ascetic and they said he had a demon.
· Vs. 34 Jesus came eating and drinking and they called Him a glutton and a drunk.
· Vs. 35 The truly wise have proven Jesus right by their actions.
