Ruth 3

THE HOUR OF FAITH

#3 of 4 in a Series on Ruth

We preach that salvation is the result of faith in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9; John 1:12-13, 3:36

However, faith does not end at salvation. It begins with salvation! Hebrews 11:6

Four times in the Scriptures God says that the just shall live by faith. (Habakkuk 2:4; Romans 1:17; Galatians 3:11; Hebrews 10:38) This statement is not only a commentary on salvation, but also how we are to live after salvation. Proverbs 3:5-6

Everything the Christian does requires faith. That would include witnessing, suffering or watching someone you love suffer, dying or watching someone you love die, working, going to school, driving, raising a family, serving in church and a host of other things.

We have already seen Ruth in "The Hour of Decision" choosing the God of Israel by faith as her God. Ruth 1:16

Last time we saw Ruth working in "The Hour of Service" (1:19-2:23).

In this message we find Ruth in "The Hour of Faith". We want to see four things about faith that we can relate to our own lives.

FAITH IS BASED ON FACT  - Vss. 1-4

Vs. 1 - Naomi is the agent who gives Ruth the facts on faith.

There is a good reminder for Christians in these verses. Faith is not based on feeling, assumption, or some "leap in the dark". Faith is based on the facts found in God's Word.

Naomi is looking for rest or security for her daughter-in-law. But for it to happen, Ruth was going to have to believe the facts.

Vs. 2 -Naomi directs Ruth's faith to the fact that Boaz, the one in whose field Ruth had gleaned, was a near kinsman. Boaz was kinsman, or relative or Elimelech, Namoi's late husband. This placed him in an important position. Naomi had a piece of land to be sold, and redeemed by a near kinsman. Also, as part of the transaction, the one who redeemed the land would be required to marry Ruth. See Leviticus 25:23-28 and Deuteronomy 25:5-9.

Vs. 2-3 - Ruth was instructed by Naomi to bathe and change her clothes, removing those of widowhood. She was then to go down to the threshing floor and hide until Boaz settled down for the night. He was winnowing grain (throwing it up in the air and allowing the wind to blow away the chaff.)

Vs. 4 - Do not judge this suggestion or action by our own society. Bear in mind that the threshing floor was a public place. There were probably many people present.  Also, this was a case in which Ruth had to do the asking. Because she was a widow, it was proper for her to request that Boaz redeem the property and marry Ruth. She did it in such a way that Boaz could have said no and not be embarrassed.

The faith exercised by Ruth was based on facts given to her by Naomi. They were also facts based on the Word of God.

FAITH REQUIRES OBEDIENCE - Vs. 5

Ruth was willing to do as she was told. We show our faith in God when we obey His Word.

FAITH TAKES ACTION - Vss. 6-13

Vss. 6-8 - Ruth did as she was told.

Vss. 9-13 - Boaz responded favorably.

Ruth's faith would have meant nothing unless she had taken action. James 2:17

Study Hebrews 11 and discover that men and women of faith were also men and women of action.

Many times there is nothing we can do and we must wait on God by faith. Other times there are specific things that God wants us to take definitive action.

FAITH WAITS PATIENTLY - Vss. 14-18

Ruth had done all that she could do.

Vss. 14-15 - Boaz sent her away, giving her an indication of her intentions (six measures of barley).

Vss. 16-18 - Ruth was instructed to "sit still". All she could do was to wait patiently.

When we have done all that God wants us to do in a situation, all we need to do is wait on Him. Psalm 130:5-6

2 SAMUEL 1, 1 Samuel 30:26-31

KINGLY QUALITIES

DAVID: A MAN AFTER GOD’S HEART - LESSON #10

·       Let's pretend for a moment.  Let's make believe that the United States of America has decided to become a monarchy.  And I mean an absolute monarchy. The King would have total control.  What qualities would you want that King to have?

·       From what you know about King David, what qualities made him a good king?

·       Some day the Lord Jesus is going to reign.  What qualities does He have that will make Him the best King ever?

We have been studying the life of David in 1 Samuel. We might call these studies, "David, the early years."  Today we are making the transition from studying 1 Samuel to studying 2 Samuel.  We are also beginning the study of "David, the King." As we make this transition I want us to see three kingly qualities David demonstrated.  These are three qualities worth imitating by us, and the same three qualities are demonstrated by our own King, the Lord Jesus Christ.

DAVID SHARED WITH OTHERS

READ 1 SAMUEL 30:26-31

·       Galatians 6:9-10 - And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not. [10] As we have therefore opportunity, let us do good unto all men, especially unto them who are of the household of faith.

·       David shared. We are to share. Our king, the Lord Jesus also shared. How did Jesus share during His ministry? – See Philippians 2:5-9 for the ultimate sharing that Jesus did.

·       Consider Jesus’ position in Heaven right now.                                                                                       Ephesians 1:21-22 - Far above all principality, and power, and might, and dominion, and every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come: And hath put all things under his feet, and gave him to be the head over all things to the church,

·       Think of how the Lord Jesus shares with you right now!

1. Answered Prayer - John 14:13-14 - And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. [14] If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

2. Spiritual Gifts - Ephesians 4:7-8 - But unto every one of us is given grace according to the measure of the gift of Christ. [8] Wherefore he saith, When he ascended up on high, he led captivity captive, and gave gifts unto men.

3. His Presence - Matthew 28:20 - and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

4. His Prayers - Hebrews 7:25 - Wherefore he is able also to save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them.

DAVID STOOD FOR RIGHTEOUSNESS

·       Read 1 Samuel 31:1-7 and Read 2 Samuel 1:1-10. How do we reconcile the two accounts?

·       2 Samuel 1:11-12 - David and his men go into mourning for Saul and Jonathan.

·       Based on the information given to him, David deals in righteousness with the Amalekite.                     2 Samuel 1:13-16

·       Righteousness is a kingly quality.                                                                                                              Proverbs 14:34 - Righteousness exalteth a nation: but sin is a reproach to any people.

·       Righteousness is a quality of our Lord.                                                                                                          Psalms 11:7 - For the righteous LORD loveth righteousness; his countenance doth behold the upright.                                                                                                                                                  Isaiah 53:11 - He shall see of the travail of his soul, and shall be satisfied: by his knowledge shall my righteous servant justify many; for he shall bear their iniquities.                                                                        Isaiah 11:1-5 - And there shall come forth a rod out of the stem of Jesse, and a Branch shall grow out of his roots: And the spirit of the LORD shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the LORD; And shall make him of quick understanding in the fear of the LORD: and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither reprove after the hearing of his ears: But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and reprove with equity for the meek of the earth: and he shall smite the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked. And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

·       Of course, we are not righteous, apart from Christ. Romans 3:10, 5:1, 2 Corinthians 5:21

·       Because we have been declared righteous in Christ, we should emulate our righteous king.               Titus 2:11-12  - For the grace of God that bringeth salvation hath appeared to all men, Teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly, in this present world;                                                                                                                                                         1 John 3:7 - Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.

·       What are some practical ways that you can think of that we should stand for righteousness?

DAVID SORROWED OVER LOSS

·       Read 2 Samuel 1:17-27.

·       David's mourning for Saul is interesting. He sorrowed for Saul as if Saul had never hurt him.                  I think this was only possible because David forgave Saul.

·       As a king, David would need to have empathy with those he was leading.  A good leader hurts with His people. Of course our Lord Jesus shows empathy with us.

·       Jesus, of course, bore our sorrows on Calvary.                                                                                         Isaiah 53:3-4 - He is despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows, and acquainted with grief: and we hid as it were our faces from him; he was despised, and we esteemed him not. Surely he hath borne our griefs, and carried our sorrows: yet we did esteem him stricken, smitten of God, and afflicted.

·       Jesus also wept over Jerusalem and at Lazarus’ grave.  See Luke 19:41-44 and John 11:35.

·       King Jesus has empathy for us today!                                                                                                         Hebrews 4:15-16 - For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. [16] Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·       We are to follow the example of our King.                                                                                               Romans 12:15 - Rejoice with them that do rejoice, and weep with them that weep.                                    Galatians 6:2 - Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.                                 Philippians 2:1-4 - If there be therefore any consolation in Christ, if any comfort of love, if any fellowship of the Spirit, if any bowels and mercies, Fulfil ye my joy, that ye be likeminded, having the same love, being of one accord, of one mind. Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others.

This is a rework of a previously shared outline.

TRAPPING JESUS?

The religious leaders of Jesus’ day did not believe in Him. Furthermore in Luke 20:1-18, Jesus had spoken against them.  Therefore, they tried to trap Jesus in His words so they could have Him arrested.

A PLOT – Vss. 19-20 – Spies were sent to try and get Jesus to say something for which he could be arrested.

A PRETENSION – Vss. 21-22 – These men pretended to be serious seekers of the truth.  They asked Jesus a question that could have gotten Jesus in trouble no matter what He said.  “Should taxes be paid to Caesar?”

A PERCEPTION – Vs. 23 – Jesus was not fooled. He knew what they were trying to do.

Galatians 5:1

STAND FAST!

Galatians 5:1 - Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

I know a lady who had a very rough childhood. Her father abused and ridiculed her, showing no love to speak of. Her father has passed away, so technically she is free from her father. But because of her failure to forgive, the lady is still in bondage to her father. She still lives with pain.

I know another lady who was a schoolteacher. Her first principal mistreated her. She was fired. Since that time, she held other teaching positions very responsibly.  She was free from the first principal, and yet she was not free because she failed to forgive him.  She has a hard, sad countenance.

I know a man who wrestled with the doctrine of salvation and finally came to know Christ as Savior.  The man was now free to serve God as a Christian. However, because of a critical spirit, which made him continuously dissatisfied. He really wasn't free.

The people I have just mentioned are examples of a difficulty with which all born again Christians wrestle at one time or another.  It is the problem of being set free, but being in bondage. The people I just mentioned were free because they were forgiven. They were free because they were going to Heaven, and free because they had potential victory over sin.  They were free, but they were still in bondage to a critical or unforgiving spirit.

In the Book of Galatians Paul deals with a similar problem. The Galatians, who were mostly Gentiles before being saved, were set free from the bondage of sin and the rules and regulations of Gentile religion. But now, they were listening to false teachers called Judaizers, who were teaching the Galatians that they needed to observe Jewish Old Testament Law in order to be good Christians. They were trying to bring the Galatians back into bondage.

God has a wonderful plan for the life of every Christian. It is to serve the Lord Jesus Christ in freedom all our days.  We are free to do what He wants us to do, when He wants us to do it, and in the way he wants us to do it.  We have freedom to do what is right!

God's enemy, Satan, wants us to be in bondage to law keeping, to guilt, to unforgiveness, to a critical spirit, to anger, to worry, to habitual sin of any kind. He wants anything possible to keep us from serving God freely.

The good news is that there is freedom from bondage for the Christian.  This freedom is found in Christ as Galatians 5:1 explains.

DECLARATION - …Christ hath made us free,

When Paul talks about being free he talking to those who have accepted the free gift of salvation found in Christ. Ephesians 2:8-9, John 1:12

We are free from the penalty of sin. Romans 5:6-9, Romans 8:1-2

We are free from the problem of law keeping. This is the context of Galatians 5:1. We are not dependent upon law keeping to get to Heaven.

We are free from the power of sin. Romans 6:14

When Christ comes we will be free from the presence of sin. 1 John 3:1-2

(The above outline is not original with me. I have seen it often with the exception of the word "problem".)

DANGER - …be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage.

Christ had set the Galatians free. But now they were in danger of being entangled or entwined with a yoke. A yoke was a big piece of wood placed around the neck of an animal to keep that animal under control. When the Galatians tried to add law keeping to their faith in Christ, they were putting on a new yoke of bondage. When a person is trying to keep religious law he is in bondage to detail, trying to keep everything perfectly. He is also in bondage to guilt if he breaks that law.

There is a better yoke than the yoke of bondage.  There is the yoke of Christ. Matthew 11:28-30

Allow Christ to control you through His Spirit. If He is in control, you will do what is right.  His yoke is easy! His burden is light!

DELIVERANCE - … Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free,

When a person is saved, he is saved by faith. Romans 5:1

The work of the Spirit of God (John 3:1-7, John 16:8-11, 1 Corinthians 12:13) in our lives based on the work of Christ on the cross gave us freedom to serve God properly.  Just as the Spirit of God did the work that convicted us and saved us, the same wonderful Holy Spirit is present to keep us and empower us. Ephesians 1:13-14, Galatians 5:16, 22-23

We are delivered from bondage as we stand fast in the same original liberty that set us free in Christ!  As we stand fast in the control of the Holy Spirit we will delivered from bondage in our daily lives.  Ephesians 5:18

REVELATION 10:1-11:14

AN INTERSTING INTERLUDE

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #10

·       Who are some of the characters who speak for God concerning or during the Tribulation period?

·       In this passage we meet at least four such representatives: “A mighty angel”, John, and the “two witnesses”.

·       Why is John’s ministry as the writer of Revelation so important?

In Revelation 10:1 we see an interlude between the 6th and 7th Trumpet Judgments.  Attention is given to what I call a recommissioning of John and the ministry of the Two Witnesses.

The recommissionING OF JOHN – 10:1-11:2

1. A Special Representative – 10:1-2

·       The description of this “mighty angel” here has led many to conclude that this is “The Angel of the Lord”, the Lord Jesus Christ, making an appearance.

·       Indeed these qualities are very special in many ways and do describe our Lord.

·        There are reasons to think that this is just an angel and not the Lord Jesus, according to David Levy and John MacArthur:

  1. Nowhere in the Book of Revelation is Jesus referred to as an angel.
  2. The words, “I saw another mighty angel” refers to an angel of the same kind. The other angels were not the Lord Jesus. Neither is this one.
  3. If this angel were Jesus, it would constitute another coming by him to earth.  There are only two referred to in Scripture.
  4. Other angels have appeared with similar splendor. See Ezekiel 28:11-15, and Daniel 10:5-6  These thoughts come from either/or David Levy, Revelation: Hearing the Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry Inc., 1999), pp. 120-121, John MacArthur, The MacArthur New Testament Commentary, Revelation 1-11, (Chicago, Moody Press, 1999), pp. 278-280
  5. This angel, who must have appeared huge to John, had a foot on the land and a foot on the sea. This probably shows God’s sovereign authority over all.

2. A Sealed Message – 10:3-4

·       The mighty angel made a mighty cry and there were 7 thunders.  Evidently the words that were thundered were meant for John only. He was told not to write them but to seal them up.

·       It would be silly for us to speculate as to what these thunders said.  If God wanted us to know, he would have told us.

·       Remember, John was doing a monumental work in writing the Book of Revelation.  It would not be unusual for God to give him a special message that would help John’s personal ministry. Perhaps John needed some special encouragement.

3. A Sanctified Oath – 10:5-7

·       This holy being took an oath in the name of the eternal creator.

·       The oath was that there would be no further delay in the completion of God’s plan.

·       All that had been promised by the prophets would be fulfilled after the sounding of the trumpet by the seventh angel.

·       According to MacArthur, the mystery that is revealed is found in Ephesians 1:10. MacArthur  p. 286

4. Significant Assignments – 10:8-11:2

·       John was instructed to take the open scroll in the angel’s hand.

·       The identity of the scroll is not certain.  Perhaps it contained the prophecies of coming events.

·       John was also instructed to eat the contents of the scroll.  It was sweet to the taste and bitter to the stomach.

·       The words were sweet because they were the very Word of God.

·       They were probably bitter because of the severity of the judgments.

·       In Revelation 10:11 John was commissioned again to write.  His message was to go to “many peoples, and nations, and tongues, and kings.”

·       In Revelation 11:1-2 John was instructed to “measure” the temple, altar, and worshippers.  This was probably to show God’s ownership of these things.

·       The Gentiles would have rule over Jerusalem 42 months. This is probably the second part of the Tribulation period.

The ministry of the two witnesses – 11:3-14

1. Their Durable Tenure – 11:3

·       The two witnesses will prophesy for 42 months.

·       The identity of these two witnesses is much debated. Some think that it is Elijah and Enoch.  Others think that it is Elijah and Moses.  Others think that they are two men empowered with the abilities of Elijah and Moses.  I tend to believe the latter, but no one can be sure.

2. Their Dynamic Power – 11:4-6

·       These men were God’s representatives. For an explanation of the olive trees and candlesticks see Zechariah 4:1-6. These men were God’s Spirit-empowered witnesses.

·       Nobody will be able to stop these men until their ministry is complete.  Those who try will be destroyed.

·       Through God’s Spirit they will have power to cause destruction by fire, draught, and plagues whenever they want.

3. Their Destined Demise – 11:7-10

·       These prophets will fulfill their ministry before the beast (anti-Christ) will be able to kill them.

·       Christians should be comforted that we will not die until God’s purposes for us are accomplished.

·       There will be great celebrations on earth when these prophets die.

·       As an insult, they will not be buried, but their bodies will lie in the streets of Jerusalem.

·       It is interesting to note in verse 10, that these witnesses were “tormenting” those who dwell on earth.  In reality they were carrying out judgments that should have led the people of earth to repentance.

4. Their Dramatic Victory – 11:11-14

·       After 3½ days these men will be resurrected from the dead.  This will bring terror to the people.

·       They will be summoned to Heaven and will ascend in a cloud.

·       This will differ from the rapture which shall occur “in the twinkling of an eye”.  Their enemies will watch their ascension into Heaven.

·       After their ascension there will be an earthquake which will kill 7,000 people and scare everyone else.

·       They will give glory to God in Heaven.  Whether this will lead to repentance and faith in Christ or not, we do not know.

·       There would not be any respite, another “woe” would soon come.

·       Bear in mind that through all of these things God is in control.
