THE REASON FOR HOLINESS - … for I the LORD your God am holy.

THE RESPECT OF HOLINESS - Ye shall fear every man his mother, and his father…

Psalm 111

GOD AT WORK

What has God already done in the world today?

What has God already done for you today?

How have the works of God ever surprised you?

Why should we as Christians have a good understanding of the works of God?

Psalm 111 is a praise psalm that reminds us of the works of God.  As we prepare to enter a worship service in less than an hour, it might be good for us to remind ourselves as to why we are worshipping God.

INTRODUCTION - A PROPER START!

1.     CALL TO PRAISE - Praise ye the LORD…

Why do so many Psalms begin with praise?

Why do we need to be reminded to praise the Lord?

Psalm 113:3 - From the rising of the sun unto the going down of the same the LORD's name is to be praised.

What is the value of continuous praise?

2.     COMMITMENT TO PRAISE - I will praise the LORD with my whole heart…

How do we guard against half-hearted praise?

How is whole-hearted praise valuable to those around us?

3.     CORPORATE PRAISE - …in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.

How is corporate praise a personal matter?

How does vibrant, sincere, corporate praise help us?

The psalmist gives us the reasons for praise in verses 2-9. He is talking about the works of God!

GOD’S WORKS ARE MAMMOTH - Vs. 2

How are God’s works great in nature?

How are God’s works great toward Israel?

How are God’s works great toward Christians?

Notice that the ones who delight in God’s works are the ones who should search them out.  Of what value is that to us?

GOD’S WORKS ARE MAJESTIC - Vs. 3

What do you see as majestic in what God does?

Nothing is more majestic than the new birth. Why?                                                                              John 1:13 - Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

GOD’S WORKS ARE MEMORABLE - Vs. 4-5

Why are God’s works worth remembering and most of mine are not?

Why must we remember that God’s works are gracious and full of compassion?

Vs. 5 – How have you seen God provide for needs in a memorable way?

God never forgets the promises that He has made.                                                                       Isaiah 46:11 - …yea, I have spoken it, I will also bring it to pass; I have purposed it, I will also do it.

GOD’S WORKS ARE MIGHTY - Vs. 6

What are some of the mighty works God showed to Israel?

What are some of the mighty works Jesus showed to Israel?

The mightiest work God does is to create a new creature.                                                              2 Corinthians 5:17 - Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

GOD’S WORKS ARE MEANINGFUL - Vss. 7-9

Vs. 7a – Notice the integrity of God’s works.

Vss. 7b-8 – Notice the permanence of God’s works.

Vs. 9 – Notice the beauty of God’s works.

CONCLUSION – A FITTING RESPONSE – Vs. 10

1.     To Be Wise Fear the Lord - The fear of the LORD is the beginning of wisdom:

How and why does the fear of the Lord lead to wisdom?

How does understanding God’s works help us become wise?

2.     To Understand Obey - …a good understanding have all they that do his commandments:

How does obedience to God’s Word help us understand God’s Word?

3.     To Be Happy Plan on Everlasting Praise - …his praise endureth for ever.

His praise endures forever, so we should plan on being around forever.

Psalms 145:2 - Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise thy name for ever and ever.

This is a previously shared outline now presented as a Sunday School lesson.

WE ARE THE CHURCH

As born again Christians we are the church!

As born again Christians gathered as a local assembly of believers, we are the church!

Many of the Spiritual problems we have as a church are a result of people not understanding who we are as a church.

We have an identity crisis, as such!

This morning I want to help you understand exactly who we are as a church!  By understanding who we are, we can better understand how each person who calls this church “home” should be behaving!

WE ARE A STRUCTURED & STEADFAST PEOPLE

Matthew 16:18 - And I say also unto thee, That thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

Peter was a “stone”.

The church would be built on a “large rock”. That “large rock” is Jesus Christ Himself! Peter’s own words attest to this fact. 1 Peter 2:6-7

Jesus is building his church, person by person.  Each person who comes to know Christ as their Savior is a part of the building.

Jesus is building his church into a mature, complete structure. Ephesians 4:14-16

You and I all know that not every group that calls themselves a church is really a church!  And not every church that calls itself a church is growing in new converts, and/or Spiritual maturity.

In many places throughout the world Jesus is building His church.  My concern is that He might not be building His church here!  Are we as the church growing spiritually?  Are we as a church adding new converts to His building?

IS IT HAPPENING HERE?

Not only are we his Structured People, we are His steadfast people.  The gates of “Hell”, in this case meaning, the grave or death can not prevail against His church!

The gates of the grave and death will not prevail because Christ will draw all believers to Himself!

1 Corinthians 15:51-57

As the grave could not keep Jesus, the grave can not keep you either.

WE ARE A SENT PEOPLE

Just before Jesus left the earth to go to Heaven, He gave marching orders to His church!

Matthew 28:18-20 - And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.

Jesus gives us the command to “go”.  His church is to be on the move outward.  We are not to sit, soak, and sour in the pew.

As we go what are to do three things:

·       Make Disciples – teach all nations

·       Baptize

·       Teach – to observe all the things that Jesus taught

WE ARE A SPECIAL PEOPLE

1 Peter 2:9-10 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

WE ARE CHOSEN

The church is made up of people who have been born into the family of God through faith in Christ. John 1:12-13

Each one of us who are children of God are part of the chosen. Don’t let that upset you. Let that excite you! Ephesians 1:4-6

As part of the chosen we are important to God.

As part of the chosen, God has singled us out to enjoy His grace.

As part of the chosen we have a special security, if we have been truly saved.

As part of the chosen we are special! And if you are not yet one who has put their faith in Christ, you too, can believe, be saved and found as one of God’s chosen. Acts 16:31

WE ARE A ROYAL PRIESTHOOD

We already established that we are children of God. As children of God we are members of His royal family, and we are scheduled to reign with His Son. Revelation 20:6

Have you noticed that for the most part Queen Elizabeth acts like royalty?

Have you also noticed that Queen Elizabeth has been often disturbed by the non royal behavior of her family?  Many times the royal family does not act like the royal family.

We are the church! We are God’s royalty.  I wonder how often God has been embarrassed by us in this church when we have not acted like children of the king!

We are a “royal priesthood”.  We are a “kingdom of priests”.

A priest labors for God in behalf of men.

Just as our “great high priest” intercedes for us, we are to intercede for others. Hebrews 7:24-25        1 Timothy 2:1-4, 1 Timothy 2:8, Ephesians 6:18

Just as Prince Charles could intercede for a commoner like you or me before his mother the queen, we can intercede as members of the “royal family” for others, both saved and unsaved.

We are the church. We are special! We are a royal priesthood!

Do you act like a royal? Do you pray like a royal?  Do we as a church pray like royals?

Most of you can give lots of excuses for not coming to prayer meeting.  But if you were to set your excuses aside and start praying like a royal, we wouldn’t be just building a fellowship hall, we’d be building a sanctuary!

WE ARE A HOLY PEOPLE

We are a “holy” people. The word “holy means “set apart”.

In as sense, as Christians, we have signed a contract to live for God.  When we were saved we committed ourselves to Jesus as our Savior. But that also means that Jesus is our Lord.

Right off the bat, the minute we were saved God changed us. 2 Corinthians 5:7, Ezekiel 36:26-27

Of course, it makes sense that as a church God expects us to act like the holy people that we are.              1 Peter 1:15-16

·       Do we act like the “holy” people we are?

·       Do we hunger and thirst after righteousness?

·       Do we hunger and thirst after God’s Word?

·       Do we have daily times of prayer?

·       Do we forgive or hold grudges?

·       Do we seek the lost or let them “fry”?

·       Do we praise from the heart or sit soak and sour in a pew?

·       Do we have Godly habits or habits that disturb God?

If we indeed are a holy people let’s start acting like it!

If you claim to be saved and changed by God, start acting like it!

WE ARE GOD’S OWN PEOPLE

In our text it says that we are a “peculiar people”.

The word peculiar here means that we are a people who belong to God because we have been purchased.

We are His because He has purchased us! Titus 2:14

We are the church! Do we act like we belong to God or do we act like we belong to the Devil?

There should be no behavior by any us in this church that would indicate that we belong to the devil! When we do slip and act like the Devil, it should be confessed and forsaken.

We are the church! We are special!

We are a chosen people, a holy people, a royal priesthood, and God’s possession. Why has God made us this special?

1 Peter 2:9-10 - But ye are a chosen generation, a royal priesthood, an holy nation, a peculiar people; that ye should shew forth the praises of him who hath called you out of darkness into his marvellous light: Which in time past were not a people, but are now the people of God: which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.

We are special so we can declare the praises of Him who has done so much for us!

WE ARE THE CHURCH!

WE ARE A STRUCTURED AND STEADFAST PEOPLE

WE ARE A SENT PEOPLE

WE ARE A SPECIAL PEOPLE

·       We are a chosen people.

·       We are a royal priesthood.

·       We are a holy people.

·       We are God’s possession.

I am convinced that if each of us live like we are the church, there will be wholesale changes made.  It starts with you!

What do you need to do to start acting like you are a part of this church?

COMMUNICATIONS CLINIC

Jesus teaches on prayer

Lesson #1 – THE SECRET PLACE – Matthew 6:5-6

·       If you were going to attend a Southern Gospel Music clinic, who would you want the teachers to be?

·       If you were going to attend a preaching clinic, who would you want the preachers to be?

·       If you were going to attend an eye clinic, who would you want the doctor to be?

·       If you were going to attend a prayer clinic, the most logical teacher would be the Lord Jesus Christ. Why?

·       Why do we need a prayer clinic?

·       What would you like to learn at such a clinic?

Over the next several Wednesday nights we want to attend a prayer clinic taught by our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.  We want to examine several of the passages in the Gospel where Jesus teaches on prayer.

·       What advantage is it to have a private place for personal prayers?

·       Why is it sometimes difficult to find such a place?

·       What are the benefits of private personal prayer?

Matthew 6:5 - And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.

·       In Jesus’ day there were those who went to public places to pray.  Their goal was to be seen. Why?

·       Such people exist today. Where can we find them?

·       Jesus says that these people have their reward. Why is this sad?

·       We want to note that Jesus is not teaching against prayer meetings or public prayers. He is teaching against saying private prayers publicly.

Matthew 6:6 - But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

OVERWHELMING PRIVACY – …enter into thy closet…

·       Jesus told us to go to a private chamber or closet to pray.  How literally do we need to take that today?  What did Jesus mean?

·       What are some creative private places for prayer?

·       How is praying privately a real test of our devotion?

·       What are the advantages of privacy in prayer?  Are there any disadvantages?

·       How can we guard our prayer privacy?

OVERWHELMING PRESENCE - …pray to thy Father which is in secret;

·       When we come to the father in secret, we are actually coming to “the Throne of Grace”. Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·       God is looking for those whose hearts are perfect toward Him.                                                       2 Chronicles 16:9 - For the eyes of the LORD run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to shew himself strong in the behalf of them whose heart is perfect toward him…

·       The desire of our hearts should be to abide in God’s presence.                                                   Psalms 27:4 - One thing have I desired of the LORD, that will I seek after; that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to behold the beauty of the LORD, and to enquire in his temple.

·       There is no safer place to be than in the presence of God.                                                                 Psalms 27:5 - For in the time of trouble he shall hide me in his pavilion: in the secret of his tabernacle shall he hide me; he shall set me up upon a rock.

Psalms 91:1 - He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.

OVERWHELMING POWER - and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.

·       Why does God delight in answering our private prayers?

·       What should be the motive behind our private prayers?                                                                 John 14:13-14 - And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

·       Here are some more Scriptures that assure us of God’s answers to prayer.                                  Psalms 50:15 - And call upon me in the day of trouble: I will deliver thee, and thou shalt glorify me.

Jeremiah 33:3 - Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not.

James 5:17-18 - Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.

1 John 5:14-15 - And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
