Leviticus 19:29-37

RESPECT

RESPECT YOUR DAUGHTER

Leviticus 19:29 - Do not prostitute thy daughter, to cause her to be a whore; lest the land fall to whoredom, and the land become full of wickedness.

RESPECT THE AGED

Leviticus 19:32 - Thou shalt rise up before the hoary head, and honour the face of the old man, and fear thy God: I am the LORD.

RESPECT THE FOREIGNER

Leviticus 19:33-34 - And if a stranger sojourn with thee in your land, ye shall not vex him. But the stranger that dwelleth with you shall be unto you as one born among you, and thou shalt love him as thyself; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the LORD your God.

RESPECT THE BUYER

Leviticus 19:35-36 - Ye shall do no unrighteousness in judgment, in meteyard, in weight, or in measure. Just balances, just weights, a just ephah, and a just hin, shall ye have: I am the LORD your God, which brought you out of the land of Egypt.

RESPECT THE LORD

Leviticus 19:30-31 - Ye shall keep my sabbaths, and reverence my sanctuary: I am the LORD. Regard not them that have familiar spirits, neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the LORD your God.

Leviticus 19:37 - Therefore shall ye observe all my statutes, and all my judgments, and do them: I am the LORD.

WHAT DO YOU WANT?

Therefore thus saith the Lord God, Behold, my servants shall eat, but ye shall be hungry: behold, my servants shall drink, but ye shall be thirsty: behold, my servants shall rejoice, but ye shall be ashamed: [14] Behold, my servants shall sing for joy of heart, but ye shall cry for sorrow of heart, and shall howl for vexation of spirit.

DO YOU WANT TO EAT OR STARVE?

DO YOU WANT TO DRINK OR BE THIRSTY?

DO YOU WANT TO REJOICE OR BE ASHAMED?

Matthew 7:1-12

DEVELOPING SPIRITUAL DISCERNMENT

COMMUNICATIONS CLINIC - Jesus teaches on prayer - Lesson #3

·       What is discernment?

·       What is Spiritual discernment?

·       Why is Spiritual discernment important?

·       Why do so many Christians lack Spiritual discernment?

·       How has prayer ever given you Spiritual discernment?

Matthew 7:7-11 are verses about prayer that are often taught without considering their context.  In a day and age when Spiritual discernment is so desperately needed, we need to consider these verses within their context. If we want to be Spiritual “giants” we need the discernment that is referred to in Matthew 7:1-12, and turn our prayers towards gaining that discernment.

SPECIFIC ASSIGNMENTS – Vss. 1-6

1.     KNOW WHEN NOT TO JUDGE – Vss. 1-5

·       The Scripture is clear that there are times to judge. Jesus did it and even commanded it in Verse 6.

·       According to Matthew 18:15-19, what procedure should we use to judge sin?

·       According to 1 Corinthians 6:1-8, what problem did the Corinthians lack concerning discernment?

·       According to Galatians 6:1-2, how should the spiritual brother use discernment in helping a brother who is sinning?

·       Vss. 1-2 - What type of judging is Jesus criticizing here?

·       Why do we often hold others to a higher standard than we do ourselves?

·       Notice the danger that we face when we judge others. What is it?

·       Vs. 3 – A beam is like a ‘2x4’. Why is it so much easier for us to see the speck in our brother’s eye and miss the beam in our own eye?

·       Vs. 4 - What problems do we encounter when we try Spiritual surgery on our brother with the beam in our own eye?

·       Vs. 5 – How can we perform surgery on the beam in our own eye?

·       What happens when we remove the beam from our own eye first?

2.     KNOW WHEN TO KEEP SILENT – Vs. 6

·       When people mock spiritual things and are antagonistic to Christianity, we should know when to be silent, not giving that which is holy to dogs or casting our pearls before pigs.

·       Why does Jesus demand such silence?

·       Does this mean there is a time not to witness?

SPECIAL ASSISTANCE – Vss. 7-11

·       How do these verses fit with verses 1-6?

·       Vs. 7 - In context, what should we be asking, seeking, and knocking for?

·       How will such prayers change us?

·       The meaning is to keep on asking, keep on seeking, and keep on knocking.  Why must we be so persistent?

·       Vs. 8 - We are promised answers to these persistent prayers. Basically we can say we lack Spiritual discernment because we lack persistent prayer.

·       In what ways are prayers for Spiritual discernment as important or more important than other prayers that we pray?  Mark 8:36

·       Vss. 9-11 – How are these verses a real encouragement for us to pray?

·       Luke 11:13 - If ye then, being evil, know how to give good gifts unto your children: how much more shall your heavenly Father give the Holy Spirit to them that ask him?

·       How does Luke 11:13 give us insight into what the “good things” are in verse 11?

SPECTACULAR ATTAINMENT – Vs. 12

·       What is the “Golden Rule”?

·       How does the prayer for Spiritual discernment lead to keeping of the Golden Rule?

·       When we keep the Golden Rule we fulfill the “law and the prophets”.                                      Leviticus 19:18 - Thou shalt not avenge, nor bear any grudge against the children of thy people, but thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself: I am the LORD.                                     Matthew 22:37-40 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

·       Besides not being judgmental, what are some other ways we can keep the Golden Rule?

·       How will discerning prayer help us fulfill the Golden Rule in ways besides not being judgmental?

·       Have you gained any new insights into the importance of prayer?

This is an elaboration upon a previously shared outline.

Mark 10:17-27

THE BURDEN OF A GREAT POTENTIAL

To have great potential can be a real burden.  Many people who have great potential never see it amount to anything.  Here was a man with great potential for serving Christ who let money get in the way.

HE WAS RESPECTFUL – Vs. 17 – He knelt and called Jesus “Good Master”.

HE WAS RELUCTANT – Vss. 21-22 – He didn’t want to part with his riches.

HE WAS REMORSEFUL – Vs. 22 – He was sad, but not sad enough to repent.

HE WAS RESTRICTED – Vss. 23-27 – His love of money kept him out of the Kingdom of God.

Ephesians 4:11-16

THE ROAD TO MATURITY

God wants His church to grow into Spiritual maturity.  Here is His plan for accomplishing this task.  Notice that each verse begins with a preposition, so that we have:

1. THE "AND" OF PROVISION Vs. 11

And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers;

2. THE "FOR" OF PURPOSE Vs. 12

For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ:

3. THE "TILL" OF PERFECTION (MATURITY) Vs. 13

Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ:

4. THE "THAT" OF PERMANENCE Vs. 14

That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive;

5. THE "BUT" OF PROCLAMATION Vs. 15

But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:

6. THE "FROM" OF PROGRESS Vs. 16

From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
