Nehemiah 8:1-12

LIKE THE REMNANT

There was a remnant of Israelis who returned to Jerusalem after 70 years of captivity. Eventually, under the leadership of  Nehemiah, they rebuilt the walls.  A great religious celebration was held after the building of the walls.  These people teach us some things that should be true for us as a church.

COMMUNICATIONS CLINIC - JESUS TEACHES ON PRAYER

Lesson #7 – PRAYER AND SUCCESS – JOHN 14:12-15

·        How should the Christian define success?

·        Does Jesus want your life to be a success?

·        What part does prayer have with being a successful Christian?

Like eating, sleeping, and breathing, praying should be something we are committed to doing until the day we die. Using a prayer parable, Jesus encourages us to keep on praying.

THE POTENTIAL FOR SUCCESS – Vs. 12

·        Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that believeth on me, the works that I do shall he do also; and greater works than these shall he do; because I go unto my Father.

·        The person who has potential for success is one who believes.  That’s faith.  A person that is saved is a person of faith. Ephesians 2:8-9, Romans 5:1

·       Habakkuk 2:4 - Behold, his soul which is lifted up is not upright in him: but the just shall live by his faith.                                                                                                                                       Romans 1:17 - For therein is the righteousness of God revealed from faith to faith: as it is written, The just shall live by faith.                                                                                              Galatians 3:11 - But that no man is justified by the law in the sight of God, it is evident: for, the just shall live by faith.                                                                                                           Hebrews 10:38 - Now the just shall live by faith: but if any man draw back, my soul shall have no pleasure in him.

·       Why and how must a believer continue to have faith (believe) after being saved?

·        What does Hebrews 11:6 tell you about the faith of a believer?                                                    But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.

·       The greatest work Jesus ever did was to die for our sins and to rise again.

·       The next greatest work Jesus did was to help people spiritually. Consider Matthew the tax collector, the woman at the well, and Zacchaeus.

·       The greatest event in Lazarus’ life was not his resurrection, but his salvation through Christ.

·       We can see God do great works through us. The greatest of these works will be to help others spiritually.  What are some of the works that we will do to help others spiritually.

·       We will never do greater quality works than Jesus, but we can do greater quantity works. We go where Jesus never went and reach people Jesus never reached?

THE POWER FOR SUCCESS – Vss. 13-14

And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son. If ye shall ask any thing in my name, I will do it.

·        The secret of a believer’s power is in his prayer life.

·        Jesus uses the word “whatsoever”.  What are some of the things we fail to ask for that we should ask for in prayer?

·        What does it mean to ask for something “in Jesus’ name”?

·        What should be our motive when we pray?

·        Consider how the following passages tie in with powerful prayer:                                                                                                                         Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
James 1:5-8 - If any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering. For he that wavereth is like a wave of the sea driven with the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive any thing of the Lord.
A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.
1 John 5:14-15 - And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.                                                                   John 16:24 - Hitherto have ye asked nothing in my name: ask, and ye shall receive, that your joy may be full.

THE PRACTICE DURING SUCCESS – Vs. 15

·        John 14:15 - If ye love me, keep my commandments.

·        Why should we love Jesus?

·        Why is keeping His commandments a habit that we need to diligently develop?

·        What are some key things that we can do that will help us keep His commandments?                                                                                                        Romans 12:1 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service.
Psalm 119:11 - Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.
Galatians 5:16 - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfill the lust of the flesh.

·        What will happen to our prayer lives if we fail to love Jesus enough to keep His commandments?                                                                                                                    Psalm 66:18 - If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:

2 Timothy 4:1-5

TAKING A STAND

Timothy, one of God's faithful servants, was called upon to take a stand in the midst of difficult situations. We too must learn to stand and to do it in the light of God's word.

PRESENTATION OF GOD'S WORD - Vss. 1-2

Timothy was to be faithful preaching the Word of God.

PERVERSION OF GOD'S WORD - Vss. 3-4

There will always be those willing to follow false teachers.

They will turn away from the truth to heed fables.

PERSISTENCE IN GOD'S WORD - Vs. 5

God's servant is to be persistent, enduring, evangelizing, and showing evidence (full proof) that his ministry is of God.

REVELATION 17-18

BABYLON IS FALLEN!

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #15

·        What are some of the empires that fell before our time?

·        What are some empires that have fallen during our lifetime?

·        During the Tribulation, the Antichrist will build a worldwide kingdom.  It too will fall.

In chapters 15-16 we saw the seven “vial” or bowl judgments. Immediately after these judgments the Lord Jesus will return to fight the Battle of Armageddon (Revelation 19).  Before describing that last great battle Revelation 17-18 describe the fall of “Mystery Babylon” the false religion, and Babylon the rebuilt city that will have political and economic control of the world.

CHAPTER 17 – THE FALL OF THE CULT

INVITATION – Vss. 1-2

·        Babylon was the place where false religion got its start after the flood. Genesis 11:1-9

·        From that point there appeared idolatrous mystery religions that were tied to Babylon.

·        Just as the religion of Babylon started as rebellion against God, the “one world religion” during the Tribulation is labeled as having its roots in Babylon.

·        John was summoned by one of the angels to see the “great whore”. The fact that she sat on many waters indicates that she had influence on many peoples and nations.

·        The kings of the earth were not literally committing fornication, nor were the peoples literally drunk.  They were committing spiritual fornication and drunkenness.

IDENTIFICATION – Vss. 3-6

·        Vs. 3 – The woman here is “the great whore”, the one world religion.  She was riding the antichrist, indicating that he and his kingdom were supporting her.

·        Vs. 4 – Notice the wealth that is displayed here, and the filthiness of her behavior.

·        Vs. 5 – Most prostitutes identified themselves. Spiritual rebellion and harlotry began in Babylon.

·        Vs. 6 – More often than not it is false religion that is responsible for the martyrdom of the saints.

INSIGHTS – Vss. 7-18

·        Vs. 7 – The angel was ready to explain the great sight that John saw.

·        Vs. 8 – The beast is evidently the antichrist, who staged a death and resurrection experience. Rev. 13:3,12

·        Those whose names are not written in the book of life will believe the hoax.

·        Vss. 9-10 - The seven mountains are not necessarily representative of Rome.  Rome was built on hills, not mountains. Evidently the mountains represent the world’s great kingdoms. Egypt, Assyria, Babylon, Medo-Persia, and Greece are the five fallen kingdoms. The kingdom that was currently in control was Rome. The Kingdom that will appear for a short time is the revived Roman Empire under the direction of the antichrist.

·        Vs. 11 – The antichrist who apparently died and rose again will be the seventh and eight kings.  His demise is sure because he is headed for perdition.

·        Vs. 12-13 – Ten kings will receive power to reign for a short time under the antichrist, being loyal to him.

·        Vs. 14 – The promise is of war and that Christ will be victorious.  Notice the qualities of Christ’s subjects mentioned here – “called, and chosen, and faithful”.

·        Vss. 15-17 – “The Whore” was rich and powerful. The antichrist and the ten kings will hate and destroy her. Then religion will be united with government in worship of the antichrist. Daniel 9:27, Rev. 13:4-6

·        This judgment will come from God.

·        Vs. 18 – Most likely this city is the restored Babylon.

CHAPTER 18 – THE FALL OF THE CITY

DECLARATION – Vss. 1-3

·        Because prophecies concerning Israel, Judah, and Babylon were not fulfilled with the first fall of Babylon, it is likely that this Babylon is a restored Babylon and not Rome. God fulfills his promises. Isaiah 14:3-5, Jeremiah 50:4-5, 8

·        Vss. 1-3 – The city of Babylon, like “Mystery Babylon” shall meet its demise.

·        It will become the habitation of all the demons.

·        The kings of the earth have committed spiritual fornication with her, and the financial prosperity of the city will make merchants rich.

DIRECTION – Vss. 4-5

·        God calls true believers to get out of Babylon and to have nothing to do with its sins. This is reminiscent of what God tells us to do with the world. 1 John 2:15-17

·        The reason for believers to get out is because God will remember and reward her for her sins.

DEMISE – Vss. 6-8

·        Vs. 6 - It will be “payback” time for Babylon. Because of her great sins she will receive double in judgment.

·        Vs. 7 - She will be judged for her sensuality and pride.

·        Vs. 8 – Babylon will be destroyed in one day.

·        The total destruction of Babylon will be a great display of God’s power.

DISTRESS – Vss. 9-19

·        Vss. 9-10 – The kings of the earth will lament her demise. They probably received their power and wealth from her.

·        Vss. 11-16 – Merchants will wail because of the economic disaster.

·        Vss. 17-19 – All those who make their living at sea will also wail because of the economic disaster.

DELIGHT – Vs.  20

·        All those who were ever hurt directly or indirectly by Babylon are told to rejoice at her demise. Judgment will have come.

·        Remember, God avenges His own.

DESTRUCTION – Vss. 21-24

·        Vs. 21 – As an illustration, a millstone is thrown into the sea by a mighty angel, symbolizing her violent and complete destruction.

·        Vss. 22-23 – There will be a final silence. There will be no more activity of any kind in Babylon.

·        Vs. 24 – Babylon was destroyed because she was responsible for so much persecution.
