Matthew 5:27-32

OLD AND NEW

OLD SAYINGS - Vss. 27, 31

The Old Testament Scriptures had some rules concerning faithfulness in marriage. Exodus 20:14

NEW STANDARDS - Vss. 28, 32

Jesus shows us that God's standards are higher than the general understanding the Jews of His day had concerning purity in marriage.

NEW SENSITIVITY - Vss. 30-31

This, of course, is figurative speech, showing that we should be radical when we are dealing with our thought lives.  Thoughts must be kept under control.

Sermon Seeds D21, 8/7/00

John 5:19-29

VERILY, VERILY!

In the Gospel of John, Jesus often quoted as saying "Verily, verily". When Jesus used those words, it meant He had something important to announce.  In our text Jesus used the words "Verily, verily" three times.

THE VERILY OF RELATIONSHIP - Vss. 19-23

Jesus is talking about His own personal relationship with God the Father.

THE VERILY OF RESPONSE - Vs. 24

The proper response to Jesus' words is belief!

THE VERILY OF RESURRECTION - Vss. 25-29

Romans 8:31-39

EVIDENCES OF GOD'S LOVE

If I asked you, "Does God love you?" you would answer, "Why of course He loves me!"

But let's face it. There are times when our faith in God's love for us has been tested.

·        The loss of a loved one

·        A misrepresentation

·        The sickness and suffering of a child, teen, young adult or senior saint

·        A Christian, sometimes even a pastor, disappoints you

·        And many more things could make us question God' s love for us.

When such questions about God's love come up for me or someone else there is one final and absolute source to prove that grand love of God for every born again Christian. That source, of course, is God's Word.

One of the greatest passages of Scripture that show the love that God has for the believer is Romans 8:31-39. Here in these verses I see four things about the love of God that have encouraged me and should be an encouragement to you. These four things are the proofs that can refute anything that anyone, including Satan, can say against God's love for the Christian. The four evidences of God's love for you are:

NO LIMITATION - Vss. 31-32

Vs. 31 - What shall we then say to these things?…

In order to understand this first phrase we must look back in our text to Vss. 28-30.

Most of us know and love Romans 8:28 - And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.

Vss. 29-30 tell us why Romans 8:28 is true. There are five links to a chain that explains Romans 8:28

·        Foreknowledge – God knows His elect.

·        Predestination - Don't let the word throw you. The word means to mark out ahead of time. God marked out a plan in advance for those He knew would be saved.                         God planned ahead!

·        Calling - There was the convincing, or convicting work of the Holy Spirit.

·        Justification - God declared those who have trusted Christ as Savior as righteous.                                                                     Romans 5:1 - Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

·        Glorification - This is not yet accomplished, but will be in the future.                                                                               1 John 3:2 - Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.

After listing these 5 wonderful things - foreknowledge, predestination, calling, justification, and glorification - Paul pauses and, in essence, says, "What can I say? God has done so much for us!"

And then he continues on to the next thought, if God be for us, who can be against us?

Granted, there is the curse of sin that we face each day.

Granted, there are hardships, difficulties, heartbreaks, trials and temptations.

But who can stand against us? "God plus one man equals a majority!"

Vs. 32 - He that spared not his own son…

We said there is no limitation in the love of God for us. This verse proves it. God did not even stop at the giving of His own Son for us.  God not say, "I will balk at causing my Son to suffer brutal persecution and death."  No. Instead, He allowed His Son to suffer terribly for our sakes. That's love!

There are probably limitations that most of us put on how much we are willing to give to show love.

Some would give money, but not themselves.

Others would give themselves, but not their children.

Some would give their children, but not their health.

God did not limit His love to spare His Son!

God gave His most precious possession that we might experience forgiveness and eternal life.

Romans 8:32 - He that spared not his own Son, but delivered him up for us all, how shall he not with him also freely give us all things?

"All things"? - Yes in Heaven I'm sure we'll have all things that pertain to life and happiness. Our rule with Christ, our glorified bodies, and a host of wonderful other things await us.

"All things?" "Freely"? - Today we have access to all things that we actually need. And God is not a squanderer. God is not a tightwad.  How often have we missed the all things in this verse because we have not come to Him in prayer and faith, believing? 1 John 5:14-15, John 16:24

NO ACCUSATION - Vs. 33

There is no one.

Not an individual

Not an angel

Not the devil himself that can make an accusation to Almighty God that would make Him deny you of His love.

There is a beautiful picture of there being no accusation for the believer found in Zechariah 3:1-5. Satan was not able to accuse Joshua because of God's work of justification. Satan is not able to accuse you either!

You will sin. There will be a break in fellowship with God. You will not sense His presence until you make it right through confession to God. But this does not mean that God has stopped loving you, or that an accusation will stick.

Notice the last phrase in Vs. 32.

It is God that justifies!

Who declared you righteous once and for all?

God did! Does God ever change His mind in these matters?

NEVER!

NO CONDEMNATION - Vs. 34

Romans 8:34 - Who is he that condemneth?

Can the devil condemn the child of God?

Can anyone condemn one that is washed in the blood?

The answer of course is no! Romans 8:1, 4

Jesus died for you.

Jesus rose for your benefit.

And now where is He and what is He doing?

He is at the right hand of God interceding for us!

As the accuser of the brethren Satan tries to accuse, tries to condemn, tries to make us lose our standing. Jesus speaks on our behalf. Imagine when we sin that Jesus speaks in our behalf, perhaps saying, "Father, He is one of mine. He is under my blood." 1 John 2:1-2

NO SEPARATION - Vss. 35-39

Vs 35 - Who do you think is trying to separate you from the love of Christ? Satan is!

So what does he try to use to make you feel that you are unloved?

·        Tribulation - the vast array of circumstances that are common to life, but are unpleasant.

·        Distress - "It means a very narrow place where one is crammed and pressed in by oppressive circumstances - we'd say it's like being between a rock and a hard place."

·        Persecution - being picked on, hurt or even destroyed for the cause of Christ.

·        Nakedness - lack of clothes

·        Peril - precarious situations, automobile accidents, theft, fire, threat of loss of life

·        Sword - loss of life for Christ's sake

Romans 8:37 - Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

In all these situations we are not just winners, not just conquerors.

We are big winners, we are "more than conquerors."

We don't win 2-1 but 55-0!

More than conquerors!

Now you may ask, "Why is it that I have not always acted like a conqueror when I have faced trouble?" Why have my Christian friends failed to face trials successfully?

That’s because we leave out a phrase of this verse. Romans 8:37

Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him that loved us.

We are more than conquerors through reliance on Christ!

When we go in our strength and skill we will fail.

When do something in Christ's strength we are victorious.

And there is another way we are victorious. In Heaven none of these things we face now will trouble us.

Vss. 38-39 - None of these things can separate us from God in Jesus Christ our Lord.

These are the evidences of God's love.

NO LIMITATION

NO ACCUSATION

NO CONDEMNATION

NO SEPARATION
