http://www.sermonseeds.org

************************************************************************************

There were no Sermon Seeds last week, partially due to the fact that we were away. Thanks to those who have prayed for us. We will be starting a new church ministry the beginning of December.

More information will follow!

Exodus 11

GOD KNOWS WHAT HE IS DOING

In preparation of the last plague in Egypt (the death of the first born), God reveals that He knows what He is doing.

GOD’S PLAN – Vs. 1 – God has planned that after the last plague Pharaoh will let the Children of Israel leave.

GOD’S PERSUASION – Vss. 2-3 – Through God’s persuasion the Egyptians were looted.

GOD’S POWER – Vss.4-8 – The power of God as demonstrated through the death of the first born would be revealed and Israel would be released.

GOD’S PURPOSES – Vss. 9-10 – Pharaoh’s heart was hardened so that God’s wonders would be multiplied

************************************************************************************

1 KINGS 1:1-2:11

CHANGES: OUT WITH THE OLD – IN WITH THE NEW!

·        What are the benefits of having an old leader, whether on the job, in politics, or in church?

·        What are the benefits of having a new leader?

·        Why are changes in leadership inevitable?

·        What must we remember when a new leader takes over?

David was at the end of his life. It was time for Israel to have a new king. Although David had promised Bathsheba that Solomon would be king, he evidently hadn’t made that decision public.

OLD KING – Vss. 1-4

·        Vs. 1 - Problems for the elderly have not changed in thousands of years.  Many senior citizens today have similar health issues as they get older.

·        Vss. 2-3 - The theory was that a “sweet young thing” could help keep the King warm. A beautiful young virgin named Abishag was found.

·        Vs. 4 – It appears to me that Abishag served her king well. How should we treat older people?

OLD PROBLEM – Vss. 5-9

·        Vs. 5 – Adonijah, David’s son, decided that he was going to be the next king.  He was the oldest remaining son, and would have been the logical choice.  Why are “logical choices” not always the best choice?

·        Adonijah’s behavior mirrored that of his older brother, Absalom. The old problem of rebellion in David’s family reared its ugly head once again.

·        Vs. 6 – David evidently did not do a good job in raising his children. Why do you think that is?

·        Vs. 7 – Joab and Abiathar, one of the high priests, were recruited. Evidently both of these men were out of favor with David at this time. Why are disgruntled people the targets of those who would usurp authority?

·        Vs. 8-10 – The list of those uninvited to a coronation party were actually the ones most loyal to David. It is interesting how those who usurp authority know how to work around those who don’t agree. Adonijah was trying to take over before his father died.

OLD FRIENDS – Vss. 10-27

·        Vs. 11 – Old friends tend to look out for each other. Nathan the Prophet was a Godly man, but very wise in knowing how to get things done. Matthew 10:16

·        Vss. 12-14 – Nathan coached Bathsheba as to what she needed to do.

·        Vss. 15-19 – Bathsheba reminded David of his promise concerning Solomon and informed him concerning Adonijah’s actions.

·        Vs. 20 – Bathsheba told David that it was time to take action and why.

·        Vss. 22-27 – Instead of Nathan accusing Adonijah, he asked questions based on what was happening.  He basically was asking David if he, Nathan, “had missed something”.

·        What were the motives of Bathsheba and Nathan?

·        Why are old, loyal friends so valuable?

NEW KING – Vss. 28-40

·        Vss. 28-31 - Although David may have been losing interest in living, he was not senile. Immediately he took action. He still knew how to get things done.

·        First, he recommitted himself to the promises he had made to Bathsheba.

·        Vss. 31-37 – The instructions were given for the anointing of Solomon as King. The King’s trusted servants were to carry out the ceremony post haste.

·        Vss. 38-40 - All the king’s orders were carried out and there was great joy!

·        Evidently, David was able later to participate in a grander installation of Solomon as king. At least temporarily David revived to have a formal ceremony and instruction. 1 Chronicles 28-29

NEW PANIC – Vss. 41-50

·        Vss. 41-48 - The report of the coronation was given to Adonijah and his followers.

·        Vss. 49-50 – Why was there such a panic among everyone that was involved?

·        Was the panic justified? What does Adonijah’s behavior tell you about his character

NEW MERCY – Vss. 50-53

·        What strikes you about the wisdom of Solomon’s reponse?

NEW INSTRUCTIONS – 2:1-9

·        Vss. 1-4 – David’s first instructions were concerning faithful service to God.  Why was this so important to David?

·        Vss. 5-6 – Why was David seeking the head of Joab?

·        Vs. 7 – David wanted kindnesses shown to him never forgotten.  Is that a good policy for us to follow?

·        Vss. 8-9 – David wanted justice administered to Shimei whom David had pardoned. Why?

NEW HOME – 2:10-11

·        David “slept with his fathers”.  His body was at rest.

·        David went to a new home. Psalm 17:15, 2 Corinthians 5:6-9

This is an elaboration on a previously shared outline.

PSALM 46

WHEN IN TROUBLE

·        What are the biggest troubles that are making Americans anxious this week?

·        Up to now, what is the biggest trouble you’ve ever had and how did God get you through it?

·        What advice would you give yourself as you face a new form of trouble?

·        What is Jesus doing when you have troubles?                                                                                                                             Hebrews 4:14-16 - Seeing then that we have a great high priest, that is passed into the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our profession. For we have not an high priest which cannot be touched with the feeling of our infirmities; but was in all points tempted like as we are, yet without sin. Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.

·        Ever since Adam and Eve sinned there has been trouble in the world. As you read the book of Psalms you will discover that David and the other authors of Psalms never seemed to lack trouble in their lives. Psalm 46 is a great help to Christians when they are in trouble.

·        It is not certain but it is possible that this Psalm was written in the days of King Hezekiah, when the King of Assyria invaded.  Although Hezekiah and the people of Israel were in great trouble God delivered them with a great destruction of the invading army. The Lord fought the whole battle for them.                                                         Isaiah 37:36 - Then the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred and fourscore and five thousand: and when they arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

·        Psalm 46 tells us some things that are true “When In Trouble”.

THERE IS A REFUGE - Vss. 1-3

·        Vs. 1 – Name a building in which you would feel safe against physical trouble.  How is God a better refuge than any building?

·        God also provides strength.  How strong is God?

·        Why is God’s strength in your life so awesome? Ephesians 3:16, Philippians 4:13

·        What is the significance of “present” help in trouble?

·        Vss. 2-3 – Why do we have to decide not to fear?

·        What if all the things mentioned in these verses do happen?  Why should we still not fear?

THERE IS A RIVER – Vss. 4-5

·        Vs. 4 - Notice the contrast between this verse and the two previous ones. In spite of the violent troubles round about, there is a river. The river speaks of peace, gladness, refreshment, productivity, and power under control.

·        The city of God here is Jerusalem. I feel that the verse also looks forward to New Jerusalem. Revelation 21:1-2, Revelation 22:1-2

·        I think of the river as symbolic of the Holy Spirit who dwells in us. We have His presence, peace and power in times of trouble. John 7:37-39

·        Vs. 5 – Just as God was and will be in the midst of Jerusalem, God is inside you, if you are a Christian. The city will not be moved, and we need not be moved either.

·        Just as God was and will be available to help Jerusalem, God is available to help you! Psalm 50:15, 59:16, 86:7

·        When it says that God will help “right early”, we might say “First thing in the morning.”

THERE IS RAGE - Vs. 6

·        The “heathen” will always rage until Jesus comes. Kingdoms will be shaken until Jesus comes.

·        Satan will rage against you until Jesus comes.  Your little “kingdom” will often be shaken.

·        Why is it a comfort to you that God only has to speak and a problem is solved?

·        What do we need to remember when God does not speak as quickly as we’d like Him to?

THERE IS RETRIBUTION - Vss. 7-9

·        Vs. 7 – What comfort is in this verse?

·        Why should we be impressed that God calls Himself the God of Jacob and not the God of Joseph or Daniel? (Hint: What kind of a man was Jacob?)

·        Vs. 8 – The victory is ultimately God’s, and we will see it, not only in the world, but also in our own lives. Think of how many times the Lord has just eliminated your problems!

·        Vs. 9 speaks of the future. He will have total victory at Armageddon.  Revelation 19

THERE IS REST - Vss. 10-11

·        Vs. 10 – Why is it hard to “be still”?

·        Why do we have to be still before we will truly know the power of God in our lives?

·        According to this verse, what is God’s purpose?

·        According to this verse, what should be the purpose of our lives?

This is an elaboration on a previously shared outline.

Galatians 5:13 etc.

IMPROVING YOUR SERVE

According to Galatians 5:13 we are to serve one another.

Other Scriptures including Ephesians 2:10 and Titus 3:8 would verify that the Christian Life is one of service. Even the Great Commission indicates that Christians are to serve. Matthew 28:19-20 tells us to teach all nations, to baptize and to teach those who have trusted Christ. All three of these actions are ways of serving others.

Let us consider how we can improve our serve, the way we work in behalf of others.

ACKNOWLEDGE CHRIST'S EXAMPLE - John 13:1-17

Our Lord Jesus set the example of service by taking on the lowly task of washing the Disciples' feet. He also indicated that His disciples were to follow His example. Vss. 13-17

ACCEPT THE FACT THAT JESUS WANTS YOU TO BE A SERVANT - Mark 10:42-45

The Gentiles exercise great authority over those under them. Vs. 42

It is to be different among believers. The great among Christians are to be servants. Vs.43

And the greatest Christian of all is to be servant of all. Vs. 44

Again, Jesus sets the example. Vs. 45

ATTAIN THE ATTITUDE OF A SERVANT - Philippians 2:1-8

The attitude of a servant is manifested in Vss. 1-4

The example of this servant attitude is found in Christ. Vss. 5-8

ACT AS A SERVANT OF CHRIST - Galatians 5:13-14

To act as a servant of Christ is to serve others in Love.

Two Biblical examples of serving others in love.

The Philippians served Paul. - Philippians 4:14-16

Onesiphorus - 2 Timothy 1:16-18

REVELATION 19:11-20:3

CHRIST RETURNS

THE BACK OF THE BOOK #17

“There are some astounding statistics regarding the frequent mention of Christ’s Second Coming in Scripture:

·        One fifth of the Bible is prophecy. One third of these prophecies relate in some way to Christ’s second coming.

·        There are at least 333 prophecies relating to Christ in the Old Testament. Only 109 were fulfilled at His first advent, leaving 224 – more than twice as many – to be fulfilled at His second advent.

·        Of the 46 Old Testament prophets, less than ten speak of events in Christ’s First Coming, while 36 speak of events connected with His Second Coming.

·        There are 7,959 verses in the New Testament, 330 of which refer directly to the Second Coming.

·        The Lord refers to His return 25 times.

·         Throughout the New Testament, there are more than 50 exhortations for people to be ready for Christ’s return. John MacArthur Jr. The Second Coming of the Lord Jesus Christ,(Panorama City, CA, Word of Grace Communications, 1981), p.1-  as quoted in David Levy, Revelation: Hearing The Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc. 1999), pp. 225-226

Not to be confused with the Rapture of the Church (1 Corinthians 15:51-58, 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17), the Second Coming of Christ to the earth will begin at the Battle of Armageddon, as Christ returns to set up His kingdom. All of his enemies will be defeated, as the armies of the world gather for one last battle before the Millennium.

DESCRIPTION OF CHRIST’S APPEARANCE – 19:11-16

·         Vs. 11- Heaven is opened and Christ is seen leading a huge army.

·         The white horse is a steed fit for a coming king. This is quite a contrast from the lowly donkey that He rode entering Jerusalem the first time.

·         Jesus is called “Faithful and True”.  There is nobody more trustworthy than the Lord Jesus to keep His promises and to accurately represent God. There is nobody more true or genuine than the Lord Jesus Christ. John 14:6

·         The reason Jesus goes to war with Satan and his allies is because he will be judging in righteousness.  This is one war that will be righteous and holy.

·         Vs. 12 – Nothing will escape the piercing eyes of our Lord Jesus Christ.

·         The crowns on Jesus’ head will represent his rule over the many nations He will have conquered.

·         The Lord had a name which nobody knew but Him. If God intended for us to know any more than this, He would have told us.

·         Vs. 13 – The blood in this case was not His own, but the blood of His enemies splattered upon Him.

·         Jesus is “The Word of God”. Jesus is the exact representation of God.                                    John 1:1-2, 14

·         Vs. 14 – The armies that come with Jesus will not have to fight. Therefore, their clothes will be clean.

·         “The armies will include the holy angels (Matthew 25:31), church saints (vs. 8), Old Testament believers (Jude 14-15; Daniel 12:1-2), and Tribulation saints martyred for their faith (7:13-14; 20:4). David Levy, Revelation: Hearing The Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc. 1999), p. 229

·         Vs. 15 – The sword that comes out of Christ’s mouth symbolizes the deadly power of His words. He will say the word and the rebellious nations will be destroyed.

·         Notice that Christ’s rule will be with a “rod of iron”. No one will dare disobey Christ without fear of terrible consequences.

·         The winepress was an illustration used to depict the wrath of God. Joel 3:12-14

·         Vs. 16 - There is no doubt as to who is in charge. Jesus Christ is “King of Kings and Lord of Lords”.

DECLARATION OF THE SUPPER OF THE GREAT GOD – 19:17-18

·        Vs. 17 - The birds that are invited to gather are vultures. The Battle of Armageddon will be so decisive that there will be dead bodies everywhere. “The Supper of the Great God” shows God’s total victory over His enemies.

·        Vs.18 – There will be no respect for persons at this meal.  All of God’s enemies, small and great will be included in the meal.

DEFEAT OF THE ENEMY – 19:19-21

·        Vs. 19 tells us that “the beast” or the Antichrist will have gathered armies together along with all the kings of the earth and their armies. They will be there to fight Christ.

·         Vs. 20 – The first residents of the Lake of Fire are going to be the beast and the false prophet. The false prophet’s deception of the unsaved is emphasized here.

·         Vs. 21 – Here is a summary statement as to why the vultures had so much to eat.

DETAINMENT OF SATAN – 20:1-3

·         Vss. 1-2 – An angel comes down from Heaven with a great chain and a key to the bottomless pit. Satan will be bound for a thousand years. This appears to be a signal for the start of the Millennium.

·         Vs. 3 – The nations will not be deceived by Satan for a thousand years. He will be loosed briefly at the end of this period.

·         The thousand year reign of Christ will be glorious! Isaiah 11:1-10
