Amos

LEARNING GOD’S AUTHORITY

LESSON #1 - LEARNING FROM THE GREATS

·        What positive lessons have you learned from the people at Mt. Union Bible Church?

·        What positive lessons have you learned from your parents?

·        What positive lessons have you learned from Bible Characters?

·        Why are lessons about Bible Characters so important? Romans 15:4, 2 Timothy 3:16-17

This man, the prophet Amos bursts on the scene with some very forceful words.  His emphasis is on God's Authority.  According to Fred M. Barlow, Amos uses the phrase "Thus saith the Lord" fourteen times and phrases like "saith the Lord", or “ saith the Lord God”  another 28 times. So, over 40 times in 9 chapters Amos points to the Lord as the authority for his message. The lesson we learn from this man is very valuable.  It is the Prophet Amos who teaches the importance of God's Authority in our lives.

BACKGROUND: Just what do we know about the Prophet Amos?

·        He lived when Israel was divided into two smaller countries, Israel (Samaria) and Judah.

·        Amos was a “southerner”, living in Tekoah, about 10 miles south of Judah in the southern kingdom of Judah.

·        Amos was “among the herdsmen”, which probably means “sheep breeder”.

·        According to Amos 7:14 we know that Amos was also a farmer. He grew sycamore figs, which bore fruit 3 or 4 times a year.

·        Amos didn't do his preaching in his own country of Judah, but he preached in the North, specifically in Bethel, which was one of the two centers for Israel's false worship. Bethel was where the King of Israel worshiped.

·        Amos came roaring into town and started proclaiming in Amos 1:2 - …The LORD will roar from Zion, and utter his voice from Jerusalem; and the habitations of the shepherds shall mourn, and the top of Carmel shall wither.

·        At first when Amos started to preach he condemned many of Israel's neighbors in chapters 1-2. This would have made his audience very happy.

·        But in Amos 2:5-16 the prophet "lowers the boom", so to speak, on Israel.

And from this little book we learn something about the authority of God. We begin with:

GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I THINK

Amos 3:3 - Can two walk together, except they be agreed?

It is not God’s responsibility to agree with me, but my responsibility to agree with God. Why?

·        GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I THINK ABOUT SALVATION

Romans 3:23, Romans 5:8, John 14:6, Romans 5:1

·        GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I THINK ABOUT BAPTISM

Matthew 28:19, Acts 10:47-48

·        GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I THINK ABOUT BEHAVIOR

Matthew 22:35-40, 1 Peter 1:15-16

·        GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER HOW I THINK -  MY THOUGHT PATTERNS

Psalm 19:14, Psalms 119:11, Philippians 4:8

GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHERE I GO

·        We already told you that Amos was a Southerner, from Judah. He was sent north to Samaria. How could he have argued with God about where he would serve?

·        Why do we sometimes argue with God about where we are sent?

·        What is tragic about failing to go where God sends us to share the Gospel?

·        When Jesus sent out the disciples, where did he send them first? Acts 1:8

GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I DO

·        Amos 7:10-13 - The high priest complained about Amos to the king. He also told him to go back home and make his living as a prophet there.  They didn't want to hear it!

·        Amos 7:14-15 - Then answered Amos, and said to Amaziah, I was no prophet, neither was I a prophet's son; but I was an herdman, and a gatherer of sycomore fruit: And the LORD took me as I followed the flock, and the LORD said unto me, Go, prophesy unto my people Israel.

GOD'S AUTHORITY OVER WHAT I SAY

·        All through this little book Amos quotes God. God had the authority over Amos' words.

·        How do we know when God has authority over our words?

·        What are some of the different kinds of words and people that God might have us speak to?

Hebrews 3:12-13, Mark 16:15, 1 Peter 3:15, Galatians 6:1

·        How can we be ready to share the Word of God with others? Psalm 19:14

************************************************************************************

CELEBRATE!!

Psalm 66

·     What are some of the things people celebrate?

·     What has God done for us that should make us want to celebrate?

·     How should a Christian celebrate God?

Psalm 66 invites us to celebrate God.

CALL TO WORSHIP – Vss. 1-4

·     According to Vss. 1-2, should there be emotion involved in worship?  Why do many people distance their emotions from their worship?  Is it possible to be too emotional when we worship?

·     Why is singing an important part of worship?

·     In Vss. 3-4 what is being looked forward to?

CAUSE FOR AWE – Vss. 5-9

·     Why do people, even Christians, need to be invited to “come and see the works of God?

  Vs. 5

·     What miracles has God performed that strike you as awesome (terrible)?

·     Why is Vs. 9 an encouragement to the Christian?

CHALLENGE OF TRIALS – Vss. 10-12

·     How are the trials of a Christian similar to the trying of silver?

·     What are some good verses to remember when we are being tested?

·     How does Vs. 12 comfort you?

COMMITMENT TO GOD – Vss. 13-15

·     How is a burnt offering different than other offerings?

·     What does the burnt offering teach us?

·     Why are vows mentioned right after a discussion of trials?

·     Why is it important to keep our vows to God?

COMFORT THROUGH PRAYER – Vss. 16-20

·     Why should we talk about what God has done for our souls?  Why do we hesitate to do that? Vs. 16

·     There is an important reminder about prayer in Vs. 17. What is it?  See Philippians 4:6.

·     How is Vs. 18 a reminder to Christians?

·     How are Vss. 18-20 a testimony of the grace of God?

This is an elaboration upon a previously shared outline.

REVELATION 20

AN ORDERLY TRANSITION

THE Back of the Book #18

“Chapter 20 provides a great summary of many end-time events. It reveals Christ’s Millennial rule on earth, Satan’s destruction and destiny, the destiny of  Tribulation saints, the order of various resurrections presented in the Bible, and details of the Great White Throne Judgment. Evidence in this chapter proves that the Premillennial interpretation is the correct view.”  David Levy, Revelation: Hearing The Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc. 1999), p. 235

Revelation 20 shows us the orderly and logical transition that will take place between Christ’s victory at the Battle of Armageddon in chapter 19 and the “Eternal State” as described in Revelation 20-21.

SATAN’S RESTRICTION – Vss. 1-3

·         The Battle of Armageddon will be short and decisive. The enemy armies will be destroyed and the vultures will have a feast.  Revelation 19:17-21

·         Vs. 1 – An angel (Michael?) will come down with a key to the “bottomless pit” (abyss) and a great chain.

·         Vs. 2 – John leaves no doubt as to the identity of the one imprisoned. He is the dragon, who acts like a cruel animal. He is the “old serpent” who deceived Eve in the Garden and all of her offspring throughout the ages. He is the “Devil”, the slanderer and “accuser of the brethren”.  He is “Satan”, the adversary who fights God and all believers.

·         Vs. 3 - Satan will be bound for a thousand years.  During that time Jesus will rule with a rod of iron. Any outward rebellion will be squelched. Psalm 2:9, Revelation 12:5

MILLENNIAL REIGN – Vss. 4-6

·        Vs. 4 – Although all believers are promised to reign with Christ (Daniel 9:27, 1 Corinthians 6:2, Revelation 5:10), the Tribulation saints are in view in this verse.  They, as well as Old Testament saints, will reign with Christ.

·        Vs. 5 – There are two resurrections. The first resurrection is the resurrection of those who are saved.  This resurrection will not take place all at once, but at different times.                            Daniel 12:1-3,1 Thessalonians 4:15-17, verse 4

·        Those who are not saved will wait until the second resurrection after a thousand years.

·        Vs. 6 – This is a beatitude.  What privileges all saints have!  We will be God’s priests and help rule the Millennial Kingdom!  Best of all, we will not be hurt by the “second death”.                        Verses 14-15

FINAL REBELLION – Vss. 7-8

·         Those saved people living on earth will enter into the Millennial Kingdom.                                 Matthew 25:31-46

·         They will have children, and in ideal conditions, the earth’s population will thrive.

·         There will be peace, lack of disease, and an ironclad rule by Christ. This will cause the population to boom, as well as longer life spans. Isaiah 65:17-25

·         Vs. 7 – God has a reason for releasing Satan and giving him another chance to wreak havoc.

·         Those born during the Tribulation will not all be believers! Although they will know who Christ is, and will be submissive to His rule, many will be living in quiet rebellion. Their faith will not be in Him. Although conditions will be perfect for belief, they will not believe.

·         Vs. 8 - Satan’s release will allow him to tempt the multitudes of unbelievers. They will be drawn into one last rebellion against God.

·         The term “Gog and Magog” originally referred to a group of people who will invade Israel during the Tribulation and will be destroyed. Ezekiel 38-39

·         Dr. John Walvoord said that one possible explanation for the use of these terms is “… that the expression is used much as we use the term ‘Waterloo’ to express a disastrous battle, but one not related to the historical origination of the term.” John Walvoord, The Revelation of Jesus Christ, (Chicago, Moody Bible Institute, 1966), p.303

·         The number of those rebelling will be like “the sand of the sea”.  Remember the population will have flourished, therefore the number rebelling can be huge.

DESERVED RETRIBUTION – Vss. 9-10

·        Vs. 9 – The huge rebellious army will not have a chance.  After they are assembled around Jerusalem, God will send fire from Heaven and they will be destroyed.

·        Vs. 10 – Satan will be cast into the Lake of Fire, the final place of suffering for him, the antichrist, and the false prophet.

·        Notice that the Lake of Fire is a place of permanent suffering.  Those there will not be annihilated, but will suffer forever. Mark 9:43,48, 2 Thessalonians 1:8-9

DIVINE REMODELING – Vs. 11

·        A great white throne will appear great in size, purity and authority.

·        It is the Lord Jesus Christ who will be the judge. John 5:22, 26-27, Acts 10:42

·        God is going to destroy the current heavens and earth. 2 Peter 3:10-13

JUDICIAL REVIEW – Vss. 12-14

·        The unsaved dead will be raised and stand before God. Every unsaved person who ever lived will be resurrected no matter whether they were buried, burned, or drowned.

·        The books will be opened and they will be judged according to their works.

·        Just as there are degrees of reward for believers, there will be degrees of punishment for unbelievers. 1 Corinthians 3:11-15, 2 Corinthians 5:10

·        Death and Hell (Hades) will be cast into the Lake of Fire.

JUSTIFIED REWARD – Vs. 15

·        Here is the tragedy of the second death. Those not found written in the Book of Life were cast into the Lake of Fire.

·        This is justified because of their wicked unbelief. John 3:36

·        Understanding the severity of punishment should make us all fervent witnesses for Christ!
