SERMON SEEDS FOR NOVEMBER 9, 2008

2 Chronicles 14-16
KING ASA - BIOGRAPHY OF A DETERMINED MAN
Several years ago I had the privilege of giving the sermon/eulogy for my grandmother. My sister-in-law suggested to me that Grandma was a rather determined individual. When my mother was a baby she hit a would-be kidnapper over the head with a Billy club and rescued my mother. When my grandfather died leaving her with a daughter (my aunt) to be raised, she raised her. When she broke her ankle and doctors thought she would never walk again, she walked! My grandmother always appeared to be a determined woman. My aunt had a different perspective. When I said "Grandma was determined", my aunt said, "Grandma was stubborn!"
It is good to be determined, as King Asa was, but we must be careful not to become stubborn like King Asa became.
YEARS OF STRENGTH - CHAPTER 14
Asa was determined to rely on the Lord His God for strength.
Reform - Vss. 2-5
Rest - Vss. 6-8
Reliance - Vss. 9-15
YEARS OF SENSITIVITY - CHAPTER 15
Asa was determined to follow God's directions and do as he was told.
Reminder - Vss. 1-7
Response - Vs. 8
YEARS OF STRUGGLE
Over the years Asa became more self-reliant. He made the mistake of trying to solve his own problems without God's help. When he was corrected, instead of repenting, he became stubborn.
Reaction - Vss. 1-6 - Asa reacted by seeking the help of the King of Syria.
Rebuke - Vss. 7-9 - Asa was rebuked for not relying on God.
Rejection - Vs. 10 - Asa stubbornly refused to hear God's prophet and threw him in jail.
Refusal - Vss. 11-12 - Asa stubbornly refused to seek the Lord's help when he had diseased feet.
When Asa sought to follow the Lord he was determined.
When Asa refused to follow the Lord he was stubborn.
Which are you?

The LORD reigneth, he is clothed with majesty; the LORD is clothed with strength, wherewith he hath girded himself: the world also is stablished, that it cannot be moved. Thy throne is established of old: thou art from everlasting.
THE LORDS RESISTORS Vs. 3
The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves.
THE LORDS RELIEF Vs. 4
The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.
THE LORDS RIGHTEOUSNESS Vs. 5
Thy testimonies are very sure: holiness becometh thine house, O LORD, forever.

Hosea 14
WELCOME BACK!
INVITATION TO ISRAEL - Vs. 1
Israel had fallen because of sin. She was invited to return to God.
When we have failed God we are invited to return to Him.
INSPECTION BY ISRAEL - Vs. 2-3
Israel was to examine herself and to confess sin and to renew her faith in God.
We also need to examine ourselves and to confess our sin.
INTERVENTION FOR ISRAEL - Vss. 4-8
When there is repentance God intervenes to bless!
INSTRUCTION FOR ALL - Vs. 9
God's ways are right.
Righteous people walk in the ways of God.

STAR RECRUITER - ANDREW
JOHN 1:35-41 etc.
LESSON #3 - LEARNING FROM THE GREATS
· What are some of the things that you have been recruited to do?
· What are some of the things that youve recruited others to do?
· What makes a person a good recruiter?
· How does God use recruiters?
· What makes someone a good recruiter for God?
One of the twelve apostles seemed to be very adept at recruiting. His name was Andrew, and he is probably best remembered as the brother of Simon Peter. Everyone knows about Peter; not as many know about Andrew. Andrew was one apostle who seemed to have a good grasp of recruiting. He is seen in three different places trying to bring somebody to Jesus.
· Andrew had to be recruited as a disciple of the Lord Jesus before he could do any recruiting. John 1:27-30, 35-39
ANDREW BROUGHT A RELATIVE - John 1:40-42
· Have you ever discovered something you wanted someone else to know about? Sometimes we find a great restaurant or a great bargain, and we can't wait to tell people.
· What motivated Andrew to be so aggressive?
1. He was convinced. Andrew was convinced that he had found the one that was promised in the Old Testament Scriptures. Why do we need to be convinced before we can bring our relatives or anyone else to Jesus?
2. He was concerned. Andrew was concerned that Peter know whom he knew. Andrew wanted Peter to be part of the family of God. Why should we be concerned about the Spiritual well-being of friends and family? 1 John 5:11-12, John 3:36
3. He was convincing. Once you are convinced and concerned, you will want to share the good news of Christ as Andrew did with his brother. Here are some things that you can do:
· Pray for the person's salvation.
· Ask God for opportunities to share.
· Share the Gospel, telling the person what Christ has done for you.
· Give them a tract, ask them to read it, and then discuss it with them.
· Bring the person to a church where the Gospel is preached.
ANDREW BROUGHT A RESOURCE - John 6:1-12
· This is a great story, and we like to think of a little boy who came to see Jesus. His mother might have packed him a lunch, and in the end Jesus used his lunch to feed thousands of people. While Philip was doing the math to figure out how much it would take to feed such a crowd, Andrew had found the boy with his lunch. Andrew knew the resources that were available, although he didn't think they were very many. Although Andrew didn't think he had found much, "what are they among so many," it was enough for Jesus to work.
· Have you ever done recruiting for Jesus? You might see a job that needs to be done around this church. And you might see just the person who could do the job. You could quietly suggest to them that it is something they might want to do. Recruit these people to use their resources.
· What is the most important resource that we should make available to Jesus? Why?
· The first step is to surrender ourselves to Jesus. Make all that we are and have available to Him. Romans 12:1
· The second step is to consider what abilities, talents, and/or gifts God has given to you. Romans 12:3-8
· The third step is to ask God how He wants you to use these abilities, talents, and gifts.
· There was once a young pastor named Timothy. He was told by the apostle Paul in 2 Timothy 1:14, That good thing which was committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us.
· We are to use whatever gifts we have received from God as good stewards and for His glory. 1 Peter 4:10-11
ANDREW BROUGHT A REPORT John 12:21-22
· Somebody wanted to see Jesus. Philip told Andrew, who was probably known for bringing people to Jesus. Somebody had a need, a desire, and Andrew reported it to Jesus.
· How is prayer a form of reporting?
· Some of the things that we can report to the Lord are:
1. Spiritual needs
2. Emotional needs
3. Physical needs
· When we see needs, we are to report them to God. It isn't that God doesn't know about them, but He wants us to be asking Him for His help. Psalm 81:10, Hebrews 4:14-16
· What's the best gift that you can give a friend or a loved one? The best gift you can give a friend or a loved one is to mention their names before the throne of Heaven, and bring their specific needs before God. 1 Timothy 2:1-4, Matthew 7:7-8, Ephesians 6:18
************************************************************************************
MINISTRY OF THE SPIRIT
JOHN 14:16-31
· What are the specific responsibilities of God, the Father?
· What are the specific responsibilities of God, the Son?
· What are the specific responsibilities of God, the Spirit?
· Why should the ministry of the Holy Spirit be of particular interest and importance to us?
· Remember, first and foremost that the Holy Spirit is God! Acts 5:3-4: But Peter said, "Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit and keep back part of the price of the land for yourself? While it remained, was it not your own? And after it was sold, was it not in your own control? Why have you conceived this thing in your heart? You have not lied to men but to God."
· In John 14:16-31 we learn of the things that are included in the ministry of the Holy Spirit.
THE COMFORTING SPIRIT Vss. 16,18
· What do you look for in a human comforter?
· Why is the Holy Spirit called another comforter? 1 John 2:1-2, Hebrews 7:24-25
· A comforter is one called alongside to help. How has the Holy Spirit helped you?
· John 14:18 (NASB) - I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you.
· How does not being an orphan comfort us?
THE INDWELLING SPIRIT Vs. 17
· Do you think that the disciples realized that the Holy Spirit was with them?
· Earlier in His ministry Jesus had promised the indwelling of the Holy Spirit. John 7:37-39 - In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. (But this spake he of the Spirit, which they that believe on him should receive: for the Holy Ghost was not yet given; because that Jesus was not yet glorified.)
· How will we know that the Holy Spirit is inside us?
· The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of the Lord Jesus. Compare this verse with John 14:6.
· The Holy Spirit indwells all true believers today. Romans 8:9 - But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
THE ABIDING SPIRIT Vs. 16
· Most young children are very active. For a moment they are right next to you, and the next thing you know, theyre somewhere else. The Holy Spirit is not like children. He sticks with us!
· Even when I sin, the Holy Spirit does not leave me, but He is grieved! Ephesians 4:30 - And grieve not the holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption.
· I cannot lose my salvation. If the Spirit will abide with us forever, that means I will live forever. The Holy Spirit will not have a ministry of comfort in hell!
· When Jesus says "I will never leave thee nor forsake thee," in Hebrews 13:5, we can be assured of the Spirit's ministry for all eternity.
THE TEACHING SPIRIT Vs. 26
· Here is a glorious promise! God has given us great teachers of the word by whom we have certainly been instructed. But the one who is responsible for our instruction is the Holy Spirit. He teaches us through the Word of God.
· 1 John 2:20 - But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.
1 John 2:27 - But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.· Notice that another ministry of the Holy Spirit is to bring to our minds the things that Jesus has said. In fact, He will use all Scripture! Of course, the more Scripture we memorize, the more likely it is for the Spirit to use it. Joshua 1:8, Psalm 119:11
THE PEACE-GIVING SPIRIT Vs. 27
· How is peace a gift?
· How is Jesus gift of peace different from the worlds gift of peace?
· What requirement does Romans 5:1 give for peace with God?
· What requirements are found in Philippians 4:6-7 and Isaiah 26:3-4 for the peace of God? Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Isaiah 26:3-4 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee. Trust ye in the LORD for ever: for in the LORD JEHOVAH is everlasting strength:

PHILIPPIANS 3:1-10
THE HAPPY LOSER
Many people have too much excess baggage in their religion. They have too many things that they are trying to do, too many rules that they are trying to keep, too many writings they are trying to follow, besides the Bible, and/or too many commandments they are trying to obey. They can stand to suffer loss in order to have the joy of salvation in their lives.
One such person was the Apostle Paul.
He had much religious excess baggage until he lost it and found the joy of salvation in Jesus Christ. In the verses before us this morning we find that Paul had become a happy loser.
Paul wrote these words before us out of concern for the Philippians. He could see the danger of the Philippians believing some of the false teachers that were trying to influence the early church. He was concerned that the Philippians not add any unnecessary and dangerous excess baggage to their faith in Christ. Consequently, Paul, who was a happy loser, shares a bit of testimony here, to help the Philippians keep their faith simple and happy.
Pauls words will also help us keep our faith simple and happy!
NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH, Vss. 2-3
Vs. 2 - Paul is actually giving a three-fold warning here.
First, he says "BEWARE OF DOGS". No, he wasn't giving your mailman a warning. Nor was he thinking of a household pet. His idea of dogs here would have been more in line with the thought of wild dogs, who were scavengers, howlers, untamed, and dangerous.
For the Jews of Paul's day, a dog was a gentile unbeliever.
But this was not how Paul was using the word, dog.
To see how Paul was using the word we go back to Isaiah 56:10-11. With the mention of shepherds and dogs in the same passage, it is evident that Isaiah is talking about false teachers or prophets. This is who Paul is also referring to as "dogs." Paul was opposed by a group of professing Christians known as "Judaizers". They were those who would add parts of the Jewish law to the doctrine of salvation in Christ.
Second, Paul says, "Beware of evil workers." He is talking about the same group of people. They were workers of evil, because they were perverting the pure Gospel of Christ. They were causing confusion and unrest in churches with their false teaching.
Any time someone magnifies a doctrine, that is, a teaching, over all other doctrines there is bound to be trouble. Especially when folks think that their special doctrine is necessary for salvation.
The third part of this warning is "beware of the concision. "This seems to be a play on words. The word here means "mutilators." Evidently Paul is referring to those who were following him around and teaching that one must practice the Jewish rite of circumcision in order to be saved. Acts 15:1
Now, you may ask, "How does this warning apply to us?"
My friends, there are all sorts of people who are trying to add conditions for salvation to the Gospel. And there are all sorts of people trying to change the Gospel of Christ. Many are sincere, but they are sincerely wrong!
1 Corinthians 15:3-4 states the Gospel clearly. Acts 16:31 tells us what to do with the Gospel.
There are many examples of teachers to watch out for.
These people generally add their own writings to the Scriptures.
They are taking the simple Gospel and making it hard.
They are adding works of the flesh, or human effort to the plan of salvation.
Paul is saying, we will not add man's efforts to the free gift of salvation.
Paul, the happy loser, says WE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH!
Vs. 3 - Physical circumcision was a sign of Israel's covenant relationship with God, showing that they were God's people.
Circumcision was actually a sign of something that should also have taken place in the heart. Deuteronomy 30:6
Paul is saying here that physical circumcision is not necessary, because we are God's circumcision that has a circumcised heart. God's circumcision has given us a new life. Colossians 2:10-11
For those of us who are the true circumcision of Christ, there are three qualities that are true of us:
1. WE WORSHIP GOD IN THE SPIRIT. John 4:23-24
2. WE GLORY IN CHRIST JESUS.
The word rejoice here means to "glory in". Revelation 4:11, Galatians 6:14
3. WE HAVE NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH. Ephesians 2:8-9
NO CONDUCT GOOD ENOUGH Vss. 4-7
If anyone one knew that confidence in the flesh accomplished nothing, it was Paul. He had discovered that for all his good works and good conduct, there was nothing good enough in self-effort to earn Heaven. At one time, Paul trusted his works to get him into Heaven.
Here now is his personal testimony.
Vs. 4 - Paul says that he had more reason to trust his works to save him than anyone else.
Vs. 5 - Circumcision was a Jewish rite. Any male who converted to Judaism had to be circumcised.
The true Jew from birth was to be circumcised after birth. Paul had been.
Paul was also "of the stock of Israel" - He was of the right nationality. He was one of God's chosen people by birth.
He was also "of the tribe of Benjamin."
That he could name his tribe would give credence to his claim of being of the "stock of Israel".
"A Hebrew of the Hebrews" - Paul was evidently "a blue blood" Jew, with not one ounce of Gentile blood in him. He could have probably traced his lineage all the way back to Abraham.
"as touching the law, a Pharisee."
The Pharisees were the most orthodox of all Jews at that time.
Vs. 6 - "Concerning Zeal, persecuting the church.'
He held the coats of the men who stoned Stephen.
He went from house to house, arresting Christians, and carting them off to jail.
He was on the way to Damascus to persecute Christians, when Christ saved him.
touching the righteousness which is in the law, blameless."
Concerning the outward righteousness that comes from keeping the law, he was without fault. No one could find blame with the outward religion of Paul.
Paul had a commendable list of works lined up on his side of the ledger.
If anyone could have been saved by works, it was Paul.
He had everything going for him, humanly speaking.
Vs. 7 - Very simply, Paul was either going to trust his list of works for salvation, or he was going to trust Christ.
Either he was going to trust Christ + works for salvation, or he was going to trust Christ.
He chose Christ and Him alone. Hebrews 9:27-28
PAUL FOUND NO CHOICE BETTER THAN CHRIST Vss. 8-10
Vs. 8 - Paul knew that he had a choice. He chose to leave behind all self effort in favor of Christ for salvation.
All his previous efforts, his natural birth into the Jewish religion, and anything that pertained to working his way in, he counted but dung or refuse.
Vs. 9 - Paul knew that he wanted to be found in Christ and Christ alone! He would not rely on the righteousness that was based on law keeping.
Instead, he would rely on righteousness that is found in the Lord Jesus. He found that righteousness through faith in Christ.
Habakkuk said it in the old testament.
It is stated 3 times in the New Testament.
THE JUST SHALL LIVE BY FAITH!
When Paul stood in judgment, He would stand in Christ.
Vs. 10 - Now Paul gives a goal for his life that should be the goal of every Christian.
Paul was saved by faith in Christ.
Paul was changed by Christ.
Paul was in love with Christ.
So now, Paul simply wanted to know Christ better!
Paul knew that there was no choice better than Christ for salvation.
Paul knew that there was no choice better than knowing Christ in daily living after salvation.
When Paul says that he wants to know Christ here, it means he wants to know him better.
There are people you meet that you want to get to know better.
There is no one better to know better than Christ.
Paul was a happy loser!
Paul had NO CONFIDENCE IN THE FLESH
Paul knew that there was NO CONDUCT GOOD ENOUGH.
Paul found NO CHOICE BETTER THAN CHRIST.
Knowing Christ is a personal experience, a powerful experience, a painful experience and a practical experience.
ARE YOU A HAPPY LOSER?
This is an expansion of a previously shared outline.

ETERNALLY HIS!
REVELATION 21:1-22:5
THE Back of the Book #19
The subject of eternity piques peoples interest as no other theme in Scripture. People intuitively know that there is a more fulfilling existence beyond this life because the transitory events on earth do not satisfy. But to affirm the reality of eternity requires, not intuitive speculation, but a source that transcends mankind itself. God has affirmed throughout Scripture that all believers will live forever. In the last two chapters of Revelation God provides mankind with an overview of what eternity will be like. David Levy, Revelation: Hearing The Last Word, (Bellmawr, NJ, The Friends of Israel Gospel Ministry, Inc. 1999), p. 252
The Millennial reign of Christ is described in Revelation 20, as well as the final rebellion against God led by Satan and the Great White Throne Judgment of the resurrected unsaved dead. Now our text directs us to the last period of time, the Eternal State, where those of us who are saved will be eternally His!
PLACE 21:1-2
· The old Heavens and Earth will be destroyed. Revelation 20:11, 2 Peter 3:10
· Vs. 1 A new Heaven and a new earth will be created and appear after the old ones are destroyed.
· One of the new features of the new creation will be the absence of the sea. It appears that life in this new Heaven and earth will not be based on water.
· Vs. 2 New Jerusalem, created by God, will descend to be the premier city in the New Heavens and earth. This is the city that Abraham looked for. Hebrews 11:10
· This new city appears as a bride adorned for her husband. It appears that in the Eternal State both redeemed Israel and the church will be the bride. All believers will have access to this city. Revelation 21:24-27
PROCLAMATION 21:3-8
· Vs. 3 A great voice makes a great proclamation. God will tabernacle or pitch his tent with His people. God will not be far off in any way. His presence with His people will be a glorious reality that anybody in this world is yet to experience!
· Vs. 4 Sin will be absent. Because sin will be absent, tears will also be absent.
· Death, sorrow, crying, and pain will all be things of the past.
· Vs. 5 All things will be made new! We cant begin to fathom what that newness will be like, but we know that it is going to happen.
· It appears that John was overwhelmed and stopped recording his vision. He was commanded to write because the words are true and faithful. Gods Word can be trusted. Mark 13:31
· Vs. 6 In our new resurrection bodies, physical thirst will not be an issue. Our spiritual thirst will be satisfied continually and fully. John 4:13-14, 7:37-39
· Vs. 7 The true believer is the one who overcomes. Hell inherit all things! Best of all, the true and living God will be his God, and he will be Gods son.
· Vs. 8 Heaven is not for everyone! This verse gives a list of those who will not enter into the New Jerusalem. These people, who never turned from their sins to true faith will have their part in the Lake of Fire.
PREVIEW 21:9-21
· Vs. 9 John is invited to view the New Jerusalem. In this case it is the city that is viewed as the bride, because it is the place where the bride will dwell.
· Vs. 10 The New Jerusalem will descend from God and will be like no other city. Some feel that this city will appear during the Millennial Kingdom suspended in space. There is not solid Scriptural evidence for this.
· Vs. 11 This city will be brilliant, having the glory of God. The jasper here is more like a perfect diamond, beautifully reflecting the glory of God.
· Vss. 12-13 The city will have 12 gates, each guarded by an angel and each bearing the name of a tribe of Israel. This indicates to me that this city is home for believing Israel.
· Vs. 14 There are twelve foundations, one for each apostle, indicating to me that this city is home for the church.
· Vss. 15-17 The city is in the shape of a cube. It is approximately 1, 380 miles wide, long, and high!
· Vs. 18 This city will be made of the most perfectly cut translucent diamond like stones, and the purest gold anyone can imagine.
· Vss. 19-20 Precious stones of all types will make up the foundations.
· Vs. 21 Each gate will be a huge pearl!
PREEMINENCE 21:22-23
· Vs. 22 There will be no need for a temple in Heaven. God the Father and God the Son will be present, visible, and even approachable.
· Imagine how pure and glorious worship will be in this temple.
· Vs. 23 There is no need for sun or moon. The Glory of God the Father and God the Son will illuminate the city brilliantly. Imagine the reflection of that glory on all the translucent stones, pearl, and pure gold.
· It is the preeminent presence of God that will make this city shine!
PEACE 21:24-27
· Vs. 24 The word nations means gentiles. Evidently those saved gentiles who are not part of the church or Israel will be the inhabitants of the earth.
· Those who are leaders of the earth will come to the city, giving their honor and glory to God.
· Vs. 25 There will be no need to shut the gates. There will be no threats of enemy attacks, and there is no night there.
· Vs. 26 The city will be open to all nations who will bring their honor and glory inside.
· Vs. 27 This city will only house the redeemed! There will be no sin or unregenerate sinners entering in.
PARADISE 22:1-5
· Vs. 1 There will be a special river proceeding out of the throne of God and the Lamb. This river will provide spiritual life for the inhabitants of the city.
· Vs. 2 The Tree of Life, once in Eden, is now in Jerusalem. It will bear 12 different kinds of fruit and its leaves will be for the health of the nations. The richness of Heaven will be enhanced by this tree.
· Vs. 3 In Heaven there will be no curse. God the Father and Son will be present, and we, His servants, will joyfully serve Him!
· Vs. 4 The most remarkable thing of all, we shall finally see God! Wow!
· We will bear His mark on our foreheads. We will proudly display His ownership.
· Vs. 5 Light will come from God.
We will reign with God for all eternity! Hallelujah!

THE LORDS REIGN Vss. 1-2

1 John 2:27 - But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it hath taught you, ye shall abide in him.
· Notice that another ministry of the Holy Spirit is to bring to our minds the things that Jesus has said.

Hallelujah!
