Herod, in jealousy, would kill babies in the Bethlehem area. The dream protected Jesus.

EPHESIANS 3:14-21

UNDERSTANDING THE CHURCH

There are two types of churches. There is the universal church, which is made up of every truly born again Christian. And there is the local church, like this one, where a group of Christians gather in the name of Christ.

We come to Ephesians 3:14-21 to better understand God’s plan for the church.  Paul, in explaining how he prayed for the church, also shows us God’s plan for His church.

In this passage Paul is praying for the Ephesians, but this is a prayer that can and should be prayed for any Gospel preaching, Bible believing church.

In trying to understand the church this morning, we are actually going to begin with verse 21.  The first thing we learn is that:

THE ULTIMATE PURPOSE OF THE CHURCH IS TO GLORIFY GOD – Vs. 21

Now you may be thinking, “Wait a minute pastor, isn’t the purpose of the church to worship, or to win souls to Jesus, or to send missionaries, or to live Godly lives, or to encourage one another or to love each other?”

Well yes, but the ultimate purpose of the church is to bring glory to God. That is Paul’s prayer here, that God would be glorified in His church and in His Son. The glory of God is important! Romans 11:33-36, 1 Corinthians 1:30-31,             Revelation 4:11

What do these verses imply for the church?

·        God should be glorified whenever we sing.

·        God should be glorified whenever there is special music.

·        God should be glorified whenever the Scriptures are read.

·        God should be glorified whenever we pray.

·        God should be glorified whenever the offering is taken.

·        God should be glorified whenever God’s Word is taught preached.

·        God should be glorified in the ways we treat each other.

·        God should be glorified in our interpersonal relationships.

·        God should be glorified in every conversation.

The only way God will be glorified in the church is if He is glorified in the life of each of us as Christians.                                1 Corinthians 6:19-20, 1 Corinthians 10:31

THE PARENT OF THE CHURCH IS GOD, THE FATHER – Vss. 14-15

Vs. 14 – What was the reason for Paul’s prayer? It is because of the great truths that He had been sharing about the church:

Here are a couple of samples: Ephesians 2:8-10, 18-22

Paul bowed his knee, that is, he knelt in prayer. There is no set posture for prayer. You can walk, run, stand, sit, lie down, or kneel to pray.

It seems, though, that when one kneels it is the prayer posture of humility, submission and reverence.

Vss. 14-15 - Paul bowed his knee to the “Father” – Of whom every family, or the whole family in heaven and earth is named.”

In a general sense, God is the father of all. In a greater sense, God is father to us as Christians. Romans 8:15-16

Because God is the Father of all true believers, we, as a church are under the care of our loving Heavenly Father, no matter what happens in the church or in our own personal lives.

THE PLAN FOR THE CHURCH IS WONDERFUL!

Paul knew God’s plan for the church and it is a wonderful plan!

Paul knew God’s plan for the church, so he asked for it to be fulfilled!

We know God’s plan for the church, so we should ask for it to be fulfilled. 1 John 5:14-15

Vs. 16 – How rich is God? God owns everything in Heaven and Earth!

How rich is God? The New Jerusalem, as described in Revelation 21 is a cube about 1,380 miles wide, long, and high. The city has streets of pure gold and made of the most valuable precious stones.

How rich God? – He has all the power in the universe!

God’s plan is that we as a church and as individuals would be strengthened according to His riches in glory.

Jesus promised that the church would be persecuted for His sake.  He also promised to send us “the Comforter”, that is the Holy Spirit.

When we face our worst trials, the Holy Spirit is present to strengthen us through the difficulties.

It is also the Holy Spirit who strengthens us in the inner man in order to bring glory to God. Ephesians 5:18-21, Galatians 5:16, Galatians 5:22-23, Acts 1:8

Vs. 17a tells us what happens when we are strengthened with might by the Spirit in the inner man. Christ will dwell in our hearts by faith.

Now don’t get confused. The Lord Jesus Christ through the Holy Spirit indwells every believer. Romans 8:9,

The Word, “dwell” here means more than to be inside something. It means to settle down and feel at home in your heart.

Now, get this! God’s plan for you as a member of His church is that the Lord Jesus Christ would feel at home in your Heart!

Isn’t that awesome? Now the question- Is he at home in your heart. He is if you are allowing the Holy Spirit of God to control. He is, if you are continually seeking God’s forgiveness for your sins and forsaking them.

How can you be filled, controlled and strengthened with God’s Holy Spirit?

Confess Sin – 1 John 1:9

Die to self - Galatians 5:24 - And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts.                             Also see Galatians 2:20.

Ask for the Spirit’s filling - John 14:13 - And whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do, that the Father may be glorified in the Son.

God’s plan for you as a believer, and for this church as a whole is that we would be strengthened with might by the Spirit in the inner man and that Christ would feel at home in our hearts by faith!

And there’s more! Look at verse 17b.

God’s plan for us is to be rooted and grounded in love.

When something is rooted, it goes deep and has the resources to thrive. When something is grounded, it is on a firm foundation. It is difficult to move something that is grounded.

What does it mean to be rooted and grounded in love? It means that the Holy Spirit is in control in your life and the fruit of the Spirit is love.

I also feel that love of God is the “modus operandi” by which we work and as a result we will love each other.                              2 Corinthians 5:14-21, John 13:34-35

Vs. 18-19a - Not only is it God’s plan that we be rooted and ground in love, but that we comprehend the dimensions of that love! God wants us to grasp how wide, how long, how high and low the love of Christ goes!

To know the love of Christ means that His love is operating in our lives. It is this supernatural love of Christ that should make the church the most loving place on earth as each believer embraces this love. To know the love of Christ is to experience it for one’s self.

Vs. 19b - Finally Christ’s plan for the church is that each of us would be “filled with the fullness of God.”

This is phenomenal! God wants to put inside of me and you all that He is! He wants us to experience the fullness of His power, His love, and all His attributes in our lives. He wants to totally dominate us with Himself!

THE PROMISE FOR THE CHURCH IS AWESOME – Vs. 20

We cannot expect verse 20 to be true in the church or in our lives until the previous verses are true in the church and in our lives.

But God’s promise here is awesome! God wants us to experience His giving us exceeding and abundantly above all that we ask or think! God’s promise is to bless His church beyond what even we as believers would think possible! 1 John 3:21-22

ALL HE WANTS FOR CHRISTMAS

When I was a boy there was a song that went, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth.”  More recently I have become familiar with the song, “I want a Hippopotamus for Christmas”.

Without answering out loud, what do you want for Christmas?  Is it a toy, a game, some new clothes, something for the computer? Or is it something more altruistic, like a change in somebody’s attitude, more love in your family, or peace in Iraq?

Christmas is Jesus’ Birthday.  And now you may answer out loud, what do you think Jesus wants for Christmas?

Of course Jesus is God and doesn’t need any of the traditional presents like toys, games, food, or clothes.

Jesus is God and is very comfortable and authoritative.

Hebrews 1:1-4 - God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets, [2] Hath in these last days spoken unto us by his Son, whom he hath appointed heir of all things, by whom also he made the worlds; [3] Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, when he had by himself purged our sins, sat down on the right hand of the Majesty on high; [4] Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.

So what does Jesus wants for Christmas?

I would like to suggest to you that all Jesus wants for Christmas is your acceptance. He has everything else. He wants you to accept Him for who He is and what He has done.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LAMB FOR YOU LIFE

Luke 2:11 - For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

John 1:29 - The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world.

1 Peter 1:18-19 - Forasmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as silver and gold, from your vain conversation received by tradition from your fathers; [19] But with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:

Revelation 5:12 - Saying with a loud voice, Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power, and riches, and wisdom, and strength, and honour, and glory, and blessing.

John 3:16-18 - For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. [17] For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. [18] He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE

1 John 4:19 - We love him, because he first loved us.

Matthew 22:37-40 - Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind. [38] This is the first and great commandment. [39] And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. [40] On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets.

John 14:21 - He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me: and he that loveth me shall be loved of my Father, and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him.

Revelation 2:4 - Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love.

Luke 14:26-27 - If any man come to me, and hate not his father, and mother, and wife, and children, and brethren, and sisters, yea, and his own life also, he cannot be my disciple. [27] And whosoever doth not bear his cross, and come after me, cannot be my disciple.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS LORD IN YOUR LIFE

John 13:13 - Ye call me Master and Lord: and ye say well; for so I am.

Luke 9:23-24 - And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me. [24] For whosoever will save his life shall lose it: but whosoever will lose his life for my sake, the same shall save it.

Romans 12:1-2 - I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. [2] And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

For Christmas Jesus wants you to:

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LAMB FOR YOU LIFE

ACCEPT HIM AS THE LOVE OF YOUR LIFE

ACCEPT HIM AS LORD IN YOUR LIFE
