Judges 1:1-18

A GOOD START

 

There are many people who believe in getting a good start on the day by having a good breakfast.  There are also many of us Christians who believe in the importance of a good start to our day by spending time in the Word and prayer. Many like to get a good start on school or work projects.  Christian parents should want to get a good start on training their children in the things of God (Proverbs 22:6).

 

In chapter 1 of Judges the Children of Israel did get a good start in serving the Lord after Joshua died. Unfortunately, they did not continue in their walk with the Lord.  We can still learn from their good start, and copy their good example.

 

THEY ASKED GOD Vs. 1

It was Israel's responsibility to conquer the promised land. They asked God for guidance.  It is our responsibility to be good soldiers for Christ.  We should ask for guidance. See James 1:5-8

 

THEY BELIEVED GOD Vss. 2-3

God said that the Tribe of Judah should go first.  They believed what God told them, and acted!

 

THEY OBEYED GOD Vss. 4-8

They simply did what God told them to do.

There is no substitute for obedience (1 Samuel 15:22-23)

 

THEY DISPLAYED COURAGE Vss. 9-15

Othniel is an example of the courage displayed by the Tribe of Judah.

It will take courage to obey God! (Joshua 1:9)

FAITH - MATTHEW STYLE

(An expanded version of a previously shared outline)

 

·       How did you practice faith today?

·       Why is faith in the Christian life more talked about than practiced?

·       Why did Jesus make a big deal out of having faith?

·       In what respects will our faith be tested as we think on a new building?

We do not necessarily think of the Gospel of Matthew as a book about faith.  I am, however, impressed with the amount of emphasis Jesus puts on faith in this book. There are lessons to learn about faith.

LITTLE FAITH

Matthew 6:30 - Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

See Matthew 6:24-33

 

·       How does a lack of faith in God’s faithfulness keep us from attempting great things for God?

·       Why does it take faith to keep our priorities in order?

 

Matthew 8:26 - And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm. Matthew 8:23-27

 

·       Why were the disciples in the boat and facing the storm?  What does that teach us?

·       What are some of the storms we might expect to face?  What must we do as we face these storms?

 

Matthew 14:31 - And immediately Jesus stretched forth his hand, and caught him, and said unto him, O thou of little faith, wherefore didst thou doubt? Matthew 14:22-34

 

·       How should Peter be commended in this story?

·       Why did Peter sink?

GREAT FAITH

Matthew 8:10 - When Jesus heard it, he marvelled, and said to them that followed, Verily I say unto you, I have not found so great faith, no, not in Israel. Matthew 8:1-13

 

·       What made this man’s faith so remarkable?

·       How could we ever begin to come close to such faith?

 

Matthew 15:28 - Then Jesus answered and said unto her, O woman, great is thy faith: be it unto thee even as thou wilt. And her daughter was made whole from that very hour. 15:22-28

 

·       In what ways does God test our faith?

·       What motivated this woman’s faith?  What motivates yours?

OBVIOUS FAITH

Matthew 9:2 - And, behold, they brought to him a man sick of the palsy, lying on a bed: and Jesus seeing their faith said unto the sick of the palsy; Son, be of good cheer; thy sins be forgiven thee. Matthew 9:1-7

 

·       How was the faith of those bringing this man obvious to Jesus?

·       How should our faith be obvious?

HEALING FAITH

Matthew 9:22 - But Jesus turned him about, and when he saw her, he said, Daughter, be of good comfort; thy faith hath made thee whole. And the woman was made whole from that hour.

Matthew 9:18-22

 

·       How does faith make people “whole” today, besides the most obvious way?

·       How is the exercise of faith sometimes a “reach”?

FULFILLED FAITH

Matthew 9:29 - Then touched he their eyes, saying, According to your faith be it unto you. Matthew 9:27-31

 

·       Why are the results we get “according to our faith”?

MOUNTAIN MOVING FAITH

 

Matthew 21:21 - Jesus answered and said unto them, Verily I say unto you, If ye have faith, and doubt not, ye shall not only do this which is done to the fig tree, but also if ye shall say unto this mountain, Be thou removed, and be thou cast into the sea; it shall be done. Matthew 21:18-22

 

·       What is the context for “mountain moving faith”?

·       How will our prayer lives be affected if we really believed Matthew 21:21-22?

OMITTED FAITH

 

Matthew 23:23 - Woe unto you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! for ye pay tithe of mint and anise and cummin, and have omitted the weightier matters of the law, judgment, mercy, and faith: these ought ye to have done, and not to leave the other undone.

 

·       Why is it easier to tithe than to show “judgment, mercy, and faith”?

·       Why are these 3 qualities important “omissions” when they are not in our lives?

 

FOR THOUGHT:

·       What should I do to increase my life of faith?

Luke 13:1-9

LEARNING FROM DISASTER

 

In Luke 13, two types of disasters are mentioned, the natural and the unnatural.  It is here that we see that the Jewish people had the idea that those punished during natural and unnatural disasters were all being punished for some reason.  Jesus, however has another lesson for people to learn as they look at natural and unnatural disasters.

 

MAN’S PREMISE – Vss. 1,2,4

 

Vs. 1 – What we have here is an unnatural disaster.

Pontius Pilate was known for his brutality as the Roman Governor.

 

Evidently Pilate thought that certain Galileans were guilty of some sort of insurrection.  He ordered them killed.

They were quietly offering sacrifices, perhaps at Passover, and were killed in the process. Men’s blood and animals’ blood were shed at the same time.

 

Vs. 2 - The common thought was that these men were guilty of some sort of terrible crime, and that’s why they were murdered.That would be like saying every person killed on 9-11 was guilty of some sort special sin towards God. Jesus is saying this is just not so.

 

Bad things happen to good people.

Bad things happen to nice people.

It is not always because God is judging a specific individual because of sin.

It is because sin, in general, is in the world.

As long as sin reigns, people will die of both natural and unnatural causes.

 

Consider Job.

What kinds of Calamities happened to Him?

Why did these calamities happen?

What did Job’s “comforters” tell him?

 

Job 4:7 - Remember, I pray thee, who ever perished, being innocent? or where were the righteous cut off?

 

It was then and is now, very easy for people to assume when something bad happens that we or the person affected has done something wrong.

This can lead to a smug self-righteousness if nothing bad happens to us.   

 

Vs. 4 – Jesus gives another example.

            There was a tower in Jerusalem that fell.

 

Were these 18 victims of a natural disaster guilty of some special sin?

And thinking about it, what about those people who are born with deformities and diseases?  Are they or their parents guilty of something special?

The answer is it is not likely.

Of course of a parent abuses their body, such as with drugs, they can cause physical problems for their new-borns. But we can’t say that every physical problem is a result of someone specific’s sin.

 

You might remember the man who was born blind in John 9.

Jesus was asked who was guilty, the man or his parents to cause such a thing.

In John 9:3 Jesus tells us that it was neither.

 

Does God bring judgment on people and nations?

Yes, he does.

But we can’t assume that every tragedy is a result of someone’s sin.

So don’t be quick to be smug when tragedy happens to someone you don’t like, thinking they are being judged for their sins.  It could happen to you.

 

JESUS’ PRONOUNCEMENT – Vss. 3,5

 

Vss. 3&5 – Jesus makes a pronouncement of warning.

                   He said that unless those listening to him repented they would likewise perish.

 

It is possible that Jesus was looking forward to the destruction of Jerusalem in 70 A.D.

However, I believe that he was warning that is possible for all to perish and face judgment.

These words were spoken as part of a message that had much to say about coming judgment in Luke 12.

Unless a person repents, final judgment will not be pretty. Hebrews 9:27, Revelation 20:11-15

 

Hebrews 9:27 - And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment:

 

H.A. Ironside said, “Repentance is a change in mind which results in a complete change in attitude.” H.A. Ironside, Addresses on the Gospel of Luke, (Neptune, NJ, Loizeaux Brothers, 1947) p. 436   

   

When a person sees that he or she is a sinner and has no hope for Heaven, he or she turns from their sin and whatever they have been trusting before to save them. They turn from sin and to the Savior. 

 

2 Corinthians 7:10 - For godly sorrow worketh repentance to salvation not to be repented of: but the sorrow of the world worketh death.

 

Of course, when a sinner truly repents there is a change. John 3:5-8

   

Now you and I who know Jesus as Savior do not need to worry about getting into Heaven if we’ve been truly converted.  However, we have been called to live Godly, holy lives. 1 Peter 1:15-16

 

1 Peter 1:15-16 - But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation; [16] Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

 

As God convicts us of sin, we need to be ready to repent.

Not because we need to be saved, but because we need to be holy! Isaiah 55:6-8

In the course of our daily walk the Holy Spirit will convict us of sin either through the preaching of the Word, or the reading of the Word, or speaking of the Spirit of God, within our hearts.

 

When we are smitten that we are wrong, we are to confess to God, forsake, and yes, if necessary make things right with someone else. Psalm 32:5  

 

So Jesus pronounces that everyone needs to repent.

   

GOD’S PATIENCE – Vss. 6-9

   

Read Vss. 6-9

Jesus tells a story that could refer to Israel.

Israel certainly had failed God.

Israel had been sent many prophets, looking for repentance.

Jesus himself came and dug around the roots and added fertilizer, so to speak.

And yet Israel refused to repent and was destroyed eventually by the Romans.   

 

But I with others believe that this story also refers to every lost sinner.

The person deserves judgment, but God delays judgment, so that the person has more time to repent.

 

Often you and I would be like the land owner in the story, we think people should be removed or judged, but God delays. He delays and convicts the guilty part.

Perhaps, if given more time, the person will come to his senses and repent.

 

In fact the Lord has not returned yet, in order to give more people time to repent. 2 Peter 3:8-10

 

So, how does this effect us as Christians?

We know that the Lord is coming.

There are those who need the Lord.

As long as the Lord is delaying we should be doing two things, witnessing and living Godly lives.

 

Peter follows up his talk about the judgment with these words for believers. 2 Peter 3:11-14

   

Let’s be busy living for the Lord in such a way, that those who need to repent see the need because of us.

God is being patient. We need to be busy.

BE FOLLOWING – Vs. 1

Be ye therefore followers of God, as dear children;

BE LOVING – Vs. 2

And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour.

BE CLEAN – Vss. 3-4

But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks.

BE WISE – Vss. 5-6

For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience.

BE SEPARATE – Vs. 7

Be not ye therefore partakers with them.

BE WALKING

For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:

BE FRUITFUL – Vs. 9

(For the fruit of the Spirit is in all goodness and righteousness and truth;)

BE SELECTIVE – Vss. 10-13

Proving what is acceptable unto the Lord. And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them. For it is a shame even to speak of those things which are done of them in secret. But all things that are reproved are made manifest by the light: for whatsoever doth make manifest is light.

BE AWAKE – Vs. 14

Wherefore he saith, Awake thou that sleepest, and arise from the dead, and Christ shall give thee light.

Hebrews 9:27-28

THERE IS! – FOUR THINGS ON WHICH TO COUNT

 

And as it is appointed unto men once to die, but after this the judgment: 

So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; and unto them that look

for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation.

 

1.     THERE IS DEATH - And as it is appointed unto men once to die…

2.     THERE IS JUDGMENT - …but after this the judgment:

·       The majority of people will appear before “the Great White Throne” – Revelation 20:11-15

·       The born again Christian will appear before “the Judgment Seat of Christ”. –                        2 Corinthians 5:10

3.     THERE IS FORGIVENESS - So Christ was once offered to bear the sins of many; - ­Christ paid the price for our sins on the cross.  There is forgiveness for those who trust Him for forgiveness and eternal life! Isaiah 53:3-6, Romans 6:6-8, Romans 5:1, John 3:16

4.     THERE IS HOPE – …and unto them that look for him shall he appear the second time without sin unto salvation. – The born again Christian anticipates “the Rapture”. –                 1 Thessalonians 4:14-18, 1 Corinthians 15:51-58
