Exodus 20:17

CONTENTMENT!

TEN FOR THE MEN #11 – TO CHECK OUT THE WHOLE SERIES RENAMED, “THE BIG TEN”, GO TO http://www.sermonseeds.org/Whats%20New.htm

Exodus 20:17 - Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.

Ephesians 5:3 - But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints;

Colossians 3:5 - Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry:

·       How is covetousness different from all the other commandments with the possible exception of #1?

·       How will covetousness cause us to break other commandments?

·       What is the difference between normal desire and covetousness?

·       Why is covetousness such a dangerous sin?

Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

The opposite of covetousness is contentment.  When a man is truly contented, he will not covet.  In this study we will examine the things that should make us contented.

BE CONTENT WITH GOD’S PROVISION

Matthew 6:24-30 - No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.
Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment?
Behold the fowls of the air: for they sow not, neither do they reap, nor gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feedeth them. Are ye not much better than they?
Which of you by taking thought can add one cubit unto his stature?
And why take ye thought for raiment? Consider the lilies of the field, how they grow; they toil not, neither do they spin:
And yet I say unto you, That even Solomon in all his glory was not arrayed like one of these.
Wherefore, if God so clothe the grass of the field, which to day is, and to morrow is cast into the oven, shall he not much more clothe you, O ye of little faith?

Psalms 23:1 The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

Philippians 4:19 - But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus.

1 Timothy 6:7-8 - For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out. And having food and raiment let us be therewith content.

1 Timothy 6:10 - For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

Philippians 4:11 - Not that I speak in respect of want: for I have learned, in whatsoever state I am, therewith to be content.

Proverbs 5:18-19 - Let thy fountain be blessed: and rejoice with the wife of thy youth. Let her be as the loving hind and pleasant roe; let her breasts satisfy thee at all times; and be thou ravished always with her love.

BE CONTENT WITH GOD’S PRESENCE

Hebrews 13:5 - Let your conversation be without covetousness; and be content with such things as ye have: for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.

Psalms 73:23-26 - Nevertheless I am continually with thee: thou hast holden me by my right hand. Thou shalt guide me with thy counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom have I in heaven but thee? and there is none upon earth that I desire beside thee. My flesh and my heart faileth: but God is the strength of my heart, and my portion for ever.

Genesis 5:24 - And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

BE CONTENT WITH (HAVING) GOD’S PERSONALITY

1 Timothy 6:6 - But godliness with contentment is great gain.

1 Peter 1:15-16 - But as he which hath called you is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of conversation;
Because it is written, Be ye holy; for I am holy.

Philippians 3:10 - That I may know him, and the power of his resurrection, and the fellowship of his sufferings, being made conformable unto his death;

BE CONTENT WITH GOD’S POWER

Acts 1:8 - But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.

Ephesians 3:16 - That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man;

Galatians 5:16 - This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.

Galatians 5:22-23 - But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith,
Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.

BE CONTENT WITH GOD’S PEACE

John 14:27 - Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid.

Philippians 4:6-7 - Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. [7] And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

Isaiah 26:3 - Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

IT’S SEASONAL

·       What is your favorite season of the year and why?

·       Why do we have seasons of weather?

·       What, so far, has been your favorite “season of life”?

·       Why do we have “seasons of life”?

·       What can’t you do any more because the season of life has changed?  What can you do now that you couldn’t do before?

·       How does Romans 8:28 help us to handle the seasons of life?

Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 reminds us that there really are seasons in our lives.  We can’t escape them!

We must learn to adapt and trust God through whatever season in which we happen to be!

1. A time to be born, and a time to die;

·       There is nobody who was born at the wrong time.  Why?

·       Everybody needs a second birth. John 3:6-7

·       There are two types of death. One can be avoided. Hebrews 9:27-28, Psalm 116:15, Revelation 20:15

2. A time to plant, and a time to pluck up that which is planted;

·       In a Spiritual sense, what do we plant and when?

·       When we pluck up that which is planted we are either gathering the fruit or removing that which is no longer productive.

·       What are some of the fruits we Christians should look for?

·       Why should we remove what is unproductive?

3. A time to kill, and a time to heal;

·       When are the proper times to kill?  Genesis 9:6

·       When are the proper times to heal?

·       In a spiritual sense, what should we kill and what should we heal? See Colossians 3:5-7, Galatians 6:1

4. A time to break down, and a time to build up;

·       In church what should we be pulling down?

·       What should we be building up?  Ephesians 4:11-12, Ephesians 4:29

5. A time to weep, and a time to laugh;

6. A time to mourn, and a time to dance;

·       What are some of the typical times for weeping and mourning?

·       What are some of the typical times for laughing and dancing?

·       Why is it bad when people laugh and dance when they should be weeping and mourning, and vice-versa?

·       Psalms 30:5 - For his anger endureth but a moment; in his favour is life: weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.

7. A time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;

·       Stones are a hindrance when they are keeping us from serving God.  What might some of those stones be? Hebrews 12:1, 1 Peter 2:1-3

·       Stones are a help when we can build upon them.  What might some of these stones be?                  2 Peter 1:5-9

8. A time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;

·       When are hugs appropriate?

·       When are hugs inappropriate?

·       In marriage, intimacy is important.  Outside of marriage, it is sin.  Hebrews 13:4,                         1 Corinthians 7:3-5

9. A time to get, and a time to lose;

·       The word “get” has been translated “seek” or “search”.  There are times to look for things we’ve lost.  There are also times when we have to give them up for lost.  Can you think of any examples?

10. A time to keep, and a time to cast away;

·       What are some things we should strive to keep in our lives?  Philippians 4:8

·       What are some things we should cast away in our lives? Psalm 101:3

11. A time to rend, and a time to sew;

·       What are some things people need to “rip up”, literally, and figuratively?

·       When is it time to sew up or mend relationships?  Romans 12:16-18

12. A time to keep silence, and a time to speak;

·       When is it time to be quiet? Proverbs 10:19, 11:13

·       When is it time to speak?  Psalm 107:2, Proverbs 11:14, Proverbs 18:13

13. A time to love, and a time to hate;

·       Who should we love?  Deuteronomy 6:4-6, Matthew 22:37-40, 1 John 4:7-8

·       What should we hate?

14. A time of war, and a time of peace.

·       Our war is against “the world, the flesh, and the devil”.  We must be properly armed to fight that war.  Ephesians 6:10-18

·       With whom should we have peace?  Romans 5:1, Philippians 4:6-7, Isaiah 26:3,                  Romans 12:18

NEW TESTAMENT MOMS

THE ATTENTIVE MOM - Luke 2:18-19, 2:51, John 2:1-10

Mary observed her child and knew Him as well as anyone on this earth. She also remembered those things that he said and did.

An attentive Mom will be able to attend to the physical and spiritual needs of her children.

THE AMBITIOUS MOM - Matthew 20:20 -23

The mother of James and John was certainly ambitious for her children.

Many a child has been pushed too far by parents who wanted them to achieve more than the child was capable of or more than he desired to do.

THE ARTICULATE MOM (AND GRANDMOM) - 2 Timothy 1:5, 3:15

His Mother and Grandmother communicated faith and the scriptures to Timothy when Timothy was very young.  We need to articulate the Scriptures to our children as well.

THE ADOPTED MOM - Romans 16:13

The mother of Rufus was not Paul's literal mom.  She had acted towards him in a motherly way.  Praise God for those Godly older women who have "mothered" us when we needed it. Praise God when God allows you to nurture younger Christians as kind of an adopted mother.

Colossians 1:12-19

THE WORSHIP EXPERIENCE

This is a worship service.

Well, did you? Did you worship?

This is a worship service. Well, are you? Are you worshipping?

We sang contemporary choruses and traditional hymns. Did you worship?

We listened to special music. Did you worship?

We read Scripture. Did you worship?

We gave an offering. Did you worship?

We are sharing a message from God's Word. Are you worshipping?

Psalm 111:1 says, Praise ye the Lord. I will praise the Lord with my whole heart, in the assembly of the upright, and in the congregation.

Have you praised the Lord with your whole heart?

Psalm 100:2 says, Serve the Lord with gladness: come before his presence with singing.

This morning have you served the Lord with gladness?  Did you come before His presence with singing that was on your lips and in your hearts?

John 4:23 says, But the hour cometh, and now is, when the true worshippers shall worship the Father in spirit and in truth: for the Father seeketh such to worship him.

 Have you worshipped God in spirit and in truth this morning?

Let's face it, there have been many times in our lives when we have come to church, but have not had a true worship experience.

Perhaps that is true for you this very morning.

I have found in Colossians 1:12-19 some verses that remind me how to go about having a true worship experience.

BE THANKFUL - Vss. 12-14

You will not have a true worship experience unless you are thankful to God.  These verses give us several reasons for being thankful.

Vs. 12 - The word "meet" in this verse means to qualify or make fit.

We can thank God who has made us qualified to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

Our inheritance as Christians is one of being in the light of God's glory for all eternity. Heaven will be a place of glorious light. Revelation 21:23

Now think for a moment. You and I were not qualified to be part of the inheritance of light any more than I was qualified to attend Harvard or Yale!

It is our sin that keeps us from being qualified to go to Heaven.

It is our God who has provided forgiveness in Christ so we can be qualified or fit for Heaven.

Vs. 13 - In this verse we are told that God has moved us.  And just as Dottie and I were thankful about the change in housing, we should be thankful about our change in kingdoms.

Before being saved you were in the kingdom of darkness. Ephesians 2:1-3

It is from this kingdom, this domain we have been delivered and translated us into Christ's Kingdom. God has moved us from the realm of Satan to the realm of his dear, or beloved Son.

Vs. 14 - This verse tells us how God made us qualified to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light.

This verse also tells us why we have been moved from Satan's kingdom to the kingdom of God's beloved Son.

The reason for these things is the redemption that comes through Christ's shed blood.

When we were unsaved, in the kingdom of darkness, the kingdom of Satan, we were prisoners. We were dead in trespasses and sins according to Ephesians 2:1.  We could not free ourselves from the penalty of sin or the power of sin that made us slaves in Satan's Kingdom.

But the Lord Jesus came to earth and took care of the problem that kept us slaves.  He died for our sins. His blood was shed for our sins.  Because his blood was shed for our sins, He has paid the price that is sufficient for God to be satisfied.  And because God is satisfied with the payment for our sins, we are set free! 1 Peter 1:18-19

Not only have we been redeemed, or set free, we have been forgiven.  When we place our faith in Christ as our Savior, God  forgives us, based on Christ's shed blood.  When He forgives us, He sends our sins packing!

   Psalm 103:12 - As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us.

If you are a Christian, you have every reason to be thankful as you worship.

God has qualified you to be a partaker of the inheritance of the saints in light.

God has delivered you from Satan's Kingdom and moved you into the Kingdom of His dear Son.

Christ has redeemed you, set you free and forgiven you.

BE THOUGHTFUL - Vss. 15-18

One of our problems in worship is we don't think as we worship. As you worship, think or reflect on Christ. In these verses are some things to consider about Him that should help you to worship.

Vs. 15 - Christ is the image of the invisible God.

             Jesus is the exact likeness of God.

             Jesus is the manifestation of God.

It is Jesus who shows who God is, and what God is like.

Jesus shows us a God who is compassionate, righteous, holy, merciful, loving and a host of other things! Study Jesus Christ and you study God. Know Jesus Christ, and you know God.

Not only is Jesus the image of the invisible God, but He is the firstborn of every creature.

Some people believe that this verse teaches that Jesus is a created being because it calls him "firstborn".

That just isn't so!

Charles Erdman said - "'Firstborn' here means two things: priority in time and supremacy in place or position. Christ existed before the Creation, but He held the rank commonly assigned to the 'firstborn', the rank of eminence and dominion." Charles R. Erdman, The Epistles of Paul to the Colossians and to Philemon, © 1966 by W. L. Jenkins, Baker Book House, Grand Rapids, Page 52

Now think! The Lord Jesus is worthy of your worship because He was preexistent to, and preeminent over everything that was created, including you.

Vs. 16 - Jesus is the creator!  God the Father placed the creation of the worlds in His hands. He created everything.

This verse is telling us:

If it's in Heaven Jesus created it.

If it's on earth Jesus created it.

If you can see it, Jesus created it.

If you can't see it, Jesus created it.

If it's an angel of any kind Jesus created it.

If it's a man or woman, Jesus created them.

John sums it up beautifully John 1:3.

Of course, the whole Trinity was involved in creation. But don't forget that your Savior is also your creator.

And don't miss the last phrase of this verse: all things were created by him, and for him:

Now think!

You were created for Him!  You were created so you would please God. You were created for His purposes. Are you fulfilling the reason for which you were created?

And if He hadn't created you, you wouldn't be here.

If He hadn't saved you, you wouldn't have the hope of eternal life.

Vs. 17 - Notice first of all, that he is before all things.

Right away, we think of preexistence. We already saw that Jesus is eternal.  So Jesus existed before anything else existed.

But Jesus is before all things in another sense.

Jesus is before all things in rank. He is King of Kings and Lord of Lords.

Jesus is before all things in power. He has all the power in the universe.

Jesus is before all things in importance. He is God.

No wonder we should worship Him!

And he is before all things, and by him all things consist.

He holds everything together!

Now think!

Jesus is the one who is before all things, around for all eternity.

He is the one is before all things as God!

And He is the one that holds things together.

Not only does He hold the universe together.

But He holds this church together.

He holds your family together.

He holds your life together.

Even when you think things are falling apart, He is holding things together. Isaiah 41:10

Vs. 18 - What happens when a person is decapitated? A person who is decapitated is dead!  Why?  Because the body needs the head in order to function. You can function without legs or arms but not without the head.

The head is necessary because it gives direction to the body.  The head contains the control center.

Christ is the head of the church, which is His body. He is the one who gives direction. He is the one who is the control center. He is the source of the church's power.  Without Christ in control, the church, for all practical purposes is dead, useless.

Each Christian is part of the body of Christ, the church.  Christ is your head. Christ is the one who should give you direction. Christ is the source of your power. Without Christ in control in your life, for all practical purposes, you life is dead, useless.

And notice Christ's rank again. He is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead

He is the first person to raise from the dead never to die again.

He is superior to all those that will rise from the dead.

He is first in rank over all those who will rise from the dead.

And notice God's purpose, that in all things he might have the preeminence. Philippians 2:9-11

Now think!

The Christian should already be bowing his knee in submission and confessing Christ as Lord.

As you worship, Christ is to be preeminent in your thoughts.

As you do anything, Christ is to be preeminent in your life.

BE THOROUGH - Vs. 19

All fullness is found in the Lord Jesus.

All that is God is found in Jesus.

And it has pleased God that this fullness should reside in us. John 1:16

 If the fullness of God though Christ is already in your life, should you not allow the fullness of Christ to control your life?

I mean, what is better, you controlling your life, or God controlling your life?

We should be thorough in worship, allowing Christ to have full control.

Paul's prayer for the Ephesians (Ephesians 3:19) was that they would be filled with all the fullness of God.

You will be filled with the fullness of God if you are thorough.

Thorough in yielding to His will - Romans 12:1

Thorough in confessing your sin - 1 John 1:9

Thorough in requesting the filling of the Holy Spirit. Ephesians 5:18

Worship isn't complete unless it is total or thorough.

1 Peter 2:1-3

BIBLE STUDY

Here is a simple format for studying the Word of God:

EXAMINATION FOR SIN - Vs. 1

Make sure there is nothing that will hinder your study of God's Word.

Confess any known sin. 1 John 1:9

If the Spirit of God is grieved, you will not get much out of God's Word. Ephesians 4:30

ENDEAVOR IN THE SCRIPTURES - Vs. 2

As a baby is eager for milk, we should be eager to learn from the Scriptures.

Our purpose for studying God's Word should be to grow! 1 Timothy 3:16-17, Romans 15:4

EXPRESSION OF SALVATION - Vs. 3

The examination for sin and endeavor in God's Word is proof that we have been saved.

We have "tasted that the Lord is gracious".
